Activity title: Working with Shapes

Learning Targets: To add and format shapes in a document
Reference: Computers for Digital Learners 3, pp. 85-94

Concept Notes:
The Shape Effects command provides visual effects to a shape, for instance Shadow, Glow,
and 3 – D effects.
Here are the steps to insert a shape.
1. On a new blank document, insert any shape that we like.
2. Go to Insert tab.
3. From the Illustration group, click Shapes.
3. Choose a shape from the list. The example below is a star shape.

Format a Shape
When changing the format of our shape, the first step is to always select the shape itself.
Notice the tiny boxes at the corner and the rotating arrow at the center. This means the shape is
selected. The tiny boxes are called resizing handles.
Changing the fill color and outline color:
1. Go to Format tab.

2. Click Shape Fill and select color.


3. Click Shape Outline and select color.
Adding Effects to Shapes:
1. Go to Format tab.
2. Choose Shape Effects
3. Click Shadow, Glow or 3 – D effects

Formatting Text in a Shape:


1. Right-click the shape
2. Choose Edit Text and type in any words. Name
3. Go to Home tab and format the text.

Hands – On:
Create a document and insert any shape and add text by typing your name in your shape.

Here are the steps to insert a shape.

Activity title: Managing and Inserting Pictures

Learning Targets: To insert pictures from a folder.
Reference: Computers for Digital Learners 3, pp. 104-107

Concept Notes:
When using pictures, it is important to place them in one labelled folder. This way, we can
easily remember where our pictures are stored. Normally, a computer has Pictures folder where we
can place all of our pictures. To access it:
1. Click the Start button.
2. Open the File Explorer option
3. Choose Pictures.

Inserting Pictures from Computer:


1. Open a new blank document.
2. Go to Insert tab.
3. Click pictures from the Illustrations group. It will open the Insert Picture window.
4. Locate the picture that we want to insert from our picture folder. To do so, click Pictures at the
left side of the window in the Libraries group.

5. The pictures in the folder will be displayed.


6. Choose picture to be added to the document.
7. Click the insert button.

Hands – On:
Create a document and insert picture from Pictures folder.

Activity title: Arranging Text and Pictures in a Document

Concept Notes:
When using pictures on a document, we want to place them at locations to balance them
with the text.
We use the Position Wrap command to do it.
To use it, we follow these steps:
1. Double-click the picture to show the Picture Tools Format ribbon.
2. From the Arrange group locate the Position command

3. Choose what is appropriate for our document form the drop-down list.

To use Wrap Text command, we need to follow these steps:


1. Double-click the picture to show the Picture Tools Format ribbon.
2. From the Arrange group, locate the Wrap Text command.

3. Choose any text wrap option that is appropriate for our document.
Hands – On:
1. Create a document and insert a picture.
2. Use Position Wrap command and arrange it to center.
3. To move freely, use Wrap Text command and click Behind Text.

Concept Notes:
Page Layout is the arrangement of text, pictures, and other objects on a page. We can use
the Page Layout tab and the commands from the Page Setup group.
Create a new document in MS Word
To locate the Margins:
1. Click Page Layout tab.
2. Go to Page Setup.
3. Click Margins. Notice that Normal is currently selected and there also other options to choose
from.
To use Page Orientation:
1. Go to Page Layout tab.
2. Click Orientation command.
3. Choose between Portrait or Landscape option.

Hands – On:

Create a document and setup its margin and orientation.
