Gen 013 - Sas 12

Urbanization often results in deforestation, habitat loss, and the extraction of freshwater, decreasing biodiversity and altering species ranges. Floods, landslides, earthquakes, and technological hazards like toxic elements and waste are common issues in urban areas. Poor air and water quality, insufficient water availability, waste problems, and high energy consumption are exacerbated by increasing population density and urban demands.

Direction: Write if the statement falls under; resources consumption (RC), pollution (P), natural
hazard (NH), technological hazard (TH), infectious disease (ID), or human habitat (HH). Use the
assigned initial on each option and write your answer on the space provided.
ID 1. The practice of social distancing means staying home and away from others as
much as possible to help prevent spread of COVID-19
TH 2. Transportation accidents in EDSA cause a huge traffic problem in Manila.
RC 3. Urbanization often results in deforestation, habitat loss, and the extraction of
freshwater from the environment, which can decrease biodiversity and alter species ranges and
interactions.
P 4. Urban __________ may come from natural sources, but the most detrimental are
those emissions related to human activities
NH 5. Floods, landslides, earthquakes, waterfall ice, fires, as well as technological
hazards such as toxic elements, pipelines, waste and transportation, are presented in urban
areas
P 6. Third-world cities indeed have appalling levels of air pollution.
ID 7. Leptospirosis is a major public health problem, due to rapid and spatially
disorganized urbanization, inadequate sanitation and poverty, typically occurring in urban slums
TH 8. __________include hazardous materials incidents and nuclear power plant
failures.
RC 9. Extraction and processing of non-regenerative raw materials are often energy
intensive activities involving large scale interventions in ecosystems.
HH 10. Poor air and water quality, insufficient water availability, waste-disposal
problems, and high energy consumption are exacerbated by the increasing population density
and demands of urban environments.

Thinking about Learning

Direction: Answer the question briefly and use the space provided

Urbanization and poverty go together. True or false? Explain your answer.

Urbanization and poverty are connected. As urbanization continue to progress, people
migrate to cities seeking a better opportunity in life thus increasing population’s density and
causing tougher competition in jobs and resources

The world’s worst air pollution exposure levels are found in third-world cities. True or false?
Explain your answer.
Yes. Air pollution in developing countries is worse as they lack the technology and
resources to fight pollution and develop eco-friendly solutions.
If you believe that population growth is a major cause of environmental degradation, you should
be especially worried about the growth of cities. True or false? Explain your answer.
True. We should be worried of the rapid growth of populations all throughout the world
as it also indicates increased emissions of greenhouse gasses which are extremely harmful for
the environment and the rapid decrease of resources especially the nonrenewable resources.
