TSH Ip 53.0063 - 01

This document provides inspection procedures for measuring the taper of wedge box threads on TenarisHydril connections. It describes three methods for measuring the outer thread taper: 1) using an inside micrometer, 2) using single or dual MRP taper gages according to dimensional requirements on the product drawing, or 3) using a dual MRP gage system with a supplied taper standard. Personnel and responsibilities for taper inspections are also outlined. The purpose is to standardize how taper measurements are taken for consistency across orders.

2. PURPOSE

2.1 The Purpose of this document is to explain how the measurement of the Box Inner and Outer
Thread Taper is perform by one of the taper measuring options listed below for TenarisHydril
Wedge Threads, although the inspection method selected shall be used for the complete order.

3. PERSONS AFFECTED

3.1 This document is applicable to all:

3.1.1 All Tenaris Premium Connections Manufacturing Services Personnel.
3.1.2 Facilities licensed to thread TenarisHydril connections.

4. REFERENCES

4.1 Not Applicable.

5. DEFINITIONS AND ABBREVIATIONS

5.1 Definitions and Abbreviations are defined in the most current revision of TenarisHydril document
TSH-GP-00.0001.

6. RESPONSIBILITIES

6.1 Responsibilities are defined in the most current revision of TenarisHydril document
TSH-GP-00.0002.

7. PERSONNEL QUALIFICATION

7.1 Personnel qualification is defined in the most current revision of TenarisHydril document
TSH-GP-00.0003.

8. PROCEDURES

Double Tapered Box products, typical of 5X3 connectors box ends, has a change in the taper
approximately ¾ of the way into the box. From the start of this taper change to the start of the
threading pullout, the thread root and load flank are full form. The thread crest in this same region is
machined off by the topping side of the threading insert resulting in an imperfect stabbing flank crest
radius.

Inner Taper Inspection plane, is shown on the licensee product drawing for all double tappered box
ends. This plane is located several pitches into the inner taper. The axial location of this plane varies
by product.

Note: There are a few 5X3 products which do not have the inner taper change. These products are
easily identifiable on the face of the licensee product drawing and/or Inspection Report

8.1 Inspection

8.1.1 Inside Diameter Micrometer for Outer Taper

8.1.1.1 An ID Micrometer is used to establish Box Thread Taper on TenarisHydril Wedge

Series box threads by comparing root to crest measurements. The measurements
are made in line with each other, and are spaced four (4) full form threads apart.
The difference between the two measurements indicates the diametrical change
in size.

8.1.1.2 Drawing Example: Outer Taper Inspection by ID Micrometer

8.1.2 Single MRP gages for Outer Taper

8.1.2.1 Two MRP gauges having two (2) ball contacts of the same size mounted on
adjustable arms. One (1) contact ball shall be moveable and the other contact ball
fixed is used to establish the thread taper.

8.1.2.2 One gauge is set up using the A, B, and C dimensional requirements located on
the licensee Product drawing.

One gauge is set up using the D, E, and F dimensional requirements located on

the licensee Product drawing.

Two MRP Gages ae used to establish the outer taper. Place the stationary contact
of the MRP gauge on the thread crest in line with the standard line on the box OD
established by the end of part gaging method. Sweep the indicator side of the
MRP diameter gage across the thread crest 180 degrees around the connection.
The indicator reading will be a represtation of the actual thread diameter size and
the standard reading for the next step, Apply the MRP taper gage in the same
manner at the specified distance D an E. The indicator reading from this step shall

be within the limits indicated in the Inspection Report with the standard reading
previously established.

8.1.2.3 Drawing Example Outer Taper Inspection by Single MRP Gage

8.1.3 Dual MRP gages for Outer Taper

8.1.3.1 Not all TenarisHydril Wedge gages set contain a taper standard. If the gage set
provided does not contain a taper standard then this option is not applicable for
use, select one of the options listed above.

8.1.3.2 Two MRP Gauges with a TenarisHydril supplied taper standard is another option
for measuring the pin taper. Two MRP gages having swivel contact shoes. Shoe
length shall be long enough that the swivel contact shoes rest across two threads
minimum 360 degrees around the connection.

8.1.3.3 Two MRP gages with swivel feet are used to verify box outer thread taper. The
leg length setting of each gage is set by using the grooves cut in the OD of the box
taper standard. The MRP gages are installed in the ID of the box taper standard
and the indicators set to Zero. An error in taper is indicated by the difference in
indicator readings between the two MRP gages when placed on the product. The
two MRP indicators readings shall be within the values indicated in the Inspection
Report.

threads by comparing root to crest to crest measurements.

8.1.4.2 An ID Micrometer or a I.D bore gage is used to establish box inner taper.

ID micrometer: take measurement at the two indicated locations. The difference

will indicate the diametrical change in size.

ID bore gage: position the gage at location number 1. Zero out the indicator.
Move to number 2 location and take a reading . The reading represents the
diametrical change in size.

Location #1: the root of the thread at the basic thread width location datum –C--
and the opposite thread crest.

Location #2: directly in line width location #1, but the specified number of pitches
futher into the box. The root to crest orientation may be reversed depending on
the number of pitches.

8.1.5 Single MRP Gauges Inner Taper

8.5.1.1 Two MRP gauges having two (2) ball contacts of the same size mounted on
adjustable arms. One (1) contact ball shall be moveable and the other contact ball
fixed is used to establish the thread taper.

8.5.1.2 Two MRP gages are used to established the inner thread taper. Place the
stationary contact of the MRP diameter gage on the thread crest in line with the
standard line on the box OD established by the end of part gaging method. Sweep
the indicator side of the MRP diameter gage across the thread crest 180
degreesaround the connecton. The indicator reading represents the actual thread
diameter size and the standard reading for the next step. Apply the MRP taper
gage in the same manner at the specified distances G and H. This indicator
reading represents the inner taper diameter size. The difference between these
two indicator readings shall be within the tolerance limits specified on the lincesee
product drawing.

8.1.6 In some cases the gaging method on the Inspection Report contains no numerical data for
a specified method. For these cases the associated gaging method may be available for
use, however, formal written authorization shall be sent to [email protected]
for approval.

8.2 Acceptance / Rejection criteria

Thread Taper is acceptable if the measured values are within the limits indicated in the
Inspection Report.

8.3 Records
The result of these inspections shall be recorded on the IR.
