Network Computing:

Discovery, Communication,
and Collaboration
ITATB Module 4
By the end of this module, you should be able to…

• Understand the concepts of the Internet and the Web, their

importance, and their capabilities.
• Understand the role of intranets, extranets, and corporate
portals for organizations.
• Identify the various ways in which communication is executed
over the Internet.
• Demonstrate how people collaborate over the Internet,
intranets, and extranets using various supporting tools,
including voice technology and teleconferencing.
By the end of this module, you should be able to…

• Describe groupware capabilities.

• Describe and analyze the role of e-learning and distance
learning.
• Analyze telecommuting (teleworking) as a technosocial
phenomenon.
• Consider ethical and integration issues related to the use of
network computing.
How does the Internet help you during
the time of pandemic?
Overview of Network Computing
• vast/global web of electronic networks, aka information
superhighway, aka the Internet

• World Wide Web (WWW or W3): most widely used application

on the Internet; handles all types of digital information and
utilizes graphical user interfaces

• Internet: transport mechanism :: WWW:application

Discovery
• browsing and searching data (static or dynamic) sources in the Web
• facilitates education, government services, commerce
• Software Agents – computer programs that carry out a set of routine
computer tasks on behalf of the users
• Search engines, directories, software, and intelligent agents (e.g., web browsing, FAQs)
• Internet-based Web Mining
• Others: Wikipedia, “howto” sites, findarticles, translator
• Portal – web-based personalized gateway to information and knowledge
in network computing (e.g., commercial/public, publishing, personal,
affinity (hobby/interest), mobile, voice, and corporate)
Corporate Portal Framework

• single-point access to specific

information and applications available in
the intranet, Internet, extranet

• aim to reduce costs, free up time, and

improve profitability

• industry-wide corporate portals

Communication
• communication – an interpersonal process of sending and
receiving symbols with messages attached to them

• most managers spend as much as 90% of their time

communicating

• Information Technologies play a major role in providing

communication support for organizations
Factors Affecting the use
of IT for Communication
Framework IT communication support
• participants

• nature of sources and destinations

• media

• place

• time

The Internet is a major supporter of
interactive communications. Agree or
Disagree?
Communication
• Web-based call enters aka customer care centers

• Electronic Chat Rooms for exchange of messages in real-time

• Voice Communication

• Blogging/Vlogging
Collaboration
• refers to mutual efforts by two or more individuals who perform
activities in order to accomplish certain tasks

• group work is a cornerstone in business process restructuring

(BPR) projects and in e-commerce

• IT facilitates group works

• workgroup: physical or virtual

Advantages and Disadvantages of Groupworks

Virtual Collaboration
• use of digital technologies that enable organizations or
individuals to collaboratively design, develop, manage, and
research products, services, and innovative IT and EC
applications

• collaboration’s benefits: fewer stockouts, reduced inventory

throughout the supply chain, lower material costs, increased
sales volume, increased competitive advantage
Traditional vs. Collaborative Supply Chain

Manifestations of e-Collaboration
• Information sharing between retailers and their suppliers

• Retailer-Supplier Collaboration

• Reduction of Product Development Time

Barriers to e-Collaboration and C-commerce
• lack of defined and universally agree-on standards

• culture shock – resistance to sharing

• lack of trust

• security and privacy concerns

Collaboration-enabling Tools:
From Workflow to Groupware
• Workflow – movement of information as it flows through the sequence of
steps that make up an organization’s work procedures

• Workflow management – automation of workflows so that documents,

information, or tasks are passed from one participant to another in a way
that is governed by the organization’s rules or procedures

• Workflow systems – business processes automation tools that place

system controls in the hands of user departments
Types of Workflow Applications
• Collaborative workflow: address project-oriented and
collaborative types of processes

• Production workflow: address mission-critical, transaction-

oriented, high-volume processes

• Administrative workflow: a cross between the previous two

types of workflow to reduce clerical costs in systems
Benefits of Workflow Management Systems
• Improve control of business processes

• Less management intervention

• Less chance for delays or misplaced work

• Improve quality of services

• Lower costs
Groupware
• refers to software products that support groups of people who
share a common task or goal and who collaborate on its
accomplishment

• fairly inexpensive IT products that can be either standalone or

suite of tools

• mostly web-based tools

Common Groupware Products
• Electronic Meeting Systems

• Electronic Teleconferencing (telephone, video, data, web)

• Real-time Collaboration (RTC) Tools (interactive whiteboards,

screensharing, instant video)

• Integration and Groupware Suites (Adobe, Office 365, Google

Workspace)
E-learning, Distance learning, and Telecommuting

• E-learning: learning supported by Web (inside a classroom,

from home, virtual classrooms)

• Distance learning: situations where teachers and students do

not meet face-to-face (correspondence, radio, snail mail,
telephone)

• E-learning is a channel of D-learning.

Benefits of e-Learning

• increased content retention

• increased opportunities for updated contents

• flexible learning from any place, at any time, and at your own
pace

• risk-free environment
E-learning, Distance learning, and Telecommuting

• Virtual Universities

• Online Corporate Training

• Telecommuting
Are you in favor of telecommuting as the
main work set-up in the Philippines?
Ethical Issues
Managerial Issues
1. Security of Communication
2. Installing Digital Dashboards
3. Control of employee time and activities
4. Number of portals
5. Organizational impacts
6. Telecommuting
7. Cost-benefit justification
8. Control and management of contents
