Calculations are for street lighting system support poles in Mombasa Port Area Road Development
Project, (MPARD) PK1 and PK2.
The design of structural engineering systems has been carried out in reference to the following
Design codes and standards:
• BS 8110: Parts 1, 2 and 3: Structural use of concrete
• BS 6399: 1996 Loading for Buildings, Part 1 Code of practice for dead and imposed loads
• BS CP3: Chapter V: 1972: Part 2 British Standards Code for Basic data for Buildings.
• BS 5950-1: 2000 – Structural use of steel work in Buildings- Code of Practice for design,
Rolled and welded sections.
• BS 8110: Part 1- Structural use of Concrete- Code of Practice for Design and Construction
• DESIGNERS’ GUIDE TO EN 1993-1-1 EUROCODE 3: DESIGN OF STEEL
STRUCTURE
Design Software
The structural Engineering Design and Analysis has been done by use of STAAD PRO Structural
Analysis. The output annexed in this report. Design R.C Spreadsheets and use of AUTO –CAD
for Structural drawings and detailing.
Dead Loads
Dead loads, also known as permanent or static loads, are those that remain relatively constant over
time and comprise, for example, the weight of a building’s structural elements, such
as beams, walls, roof and structural flooring components.
Wind Loads
Structures ( Street Light Pole 12m) will be designed and constructed to resist the effects of wind
loads as determined in CP 3: Chapter V: Part 2: 1972
Check for bolt spacing and edge/end distances according to BS 5950, Clause 6.2
From the design the proposed plate size 350x350x20mm. The initial design (500x350x20mm)
thick plate was provided for. What is provided for is adequate.
Pitch ≥ 2.5db = 2.5x 16 = 40 < 113 and 333 OK, Pitch ≤ 14tp = 14 x 20 = 280≤ 333 and 113 OK
Edge distance e1 ≥ 1.4Dh = 1.4 x 18 = 30.8 < 40 OK End distance e2 ≥ 1.4Dh = 1.4 x 22 = 30.8 <
40 OK e1 and e2 ≤ 11tp = 11 x 10 x 1 = 110 > 30, 84 OK Bolts edge and end distances are
