RECAP
Recall the basic prefixes in metric system as shown in the table.
Measuring Mass/Weight
Similar to that of length, the following table shows the relationship between
gram and other units of mass/weight in metric system.
Approximating Time
In everyday life, time intervals are usually measured in days, hours, minutes,
and seconds. Time is measured in terms of the rotation of the earth on its axis and
its revolution around the sun. Second(s) is the fundamental unit of measuring time.
How long is it? Observe a mechanical clock at your home. Every move of the second
hand is one second. In a digital watch, that is, every blink of the colon(:).It is worthy
to store in mind the different conversions of time as follows:
Unit Equivalent
1 minute(min) 60 seconds(s)
1 hour(hr) 60 minutes(min)
1 day(da) 24 hours(hr)
1 month(mo) 30 days(da)
1 year(yr) 12 months(mo)
1 year(yr) 365 days(da)
1 leap year(yr) 366 days(da)
1 decade 10 years(yr)
1 century 100 years(yr)
1 millennium 1000 years(yr)
Approximating Temperature
Temperature is the measure of hotness or coldness of something. The Two
most used temperature scales are the Fahrenheit and Celsius. The Fahrenheit scale
was invented by Gabriel D. Fahrenheit, a German glassblower and instrument-maker
working in Holland, in the early 1700s. The Celsius scale was developed by Anders
Celsius, a Swedish astronomer, in 1742.
A boiling point of water measures 100 degrees Celsius(OC) equivalent to 212
degrees Fahrenheit(OF) while the its freezing point is 0 OC = 32 OF.
Bear in mind the formulae in converting degree Celsius to Fahrenheit and vice
versa.

Converting Units of Measurement for Volume from Metric to Metric (in terms of
liter(L)
Illustrative Example 1: How to convert 49.5 liters to milliliters?
Let’s make our discussion short since I believe it will not be difficult for you,
knowing that you have already mastered our previous conversions.
Method 1: Multiplication by Unit Fraction
Recall: 1L = 1000mL
1000𝑚𝑙
Unit fraction: so that,
1𝐿
1000𝑚𝑙
49.5 L x = 49.5 x 1000ml = 49 500 ml
1𝐿
kL hL daL L dL cL mL
Observe that liter(L) is affixed for the prefixes and still arranged from larger to
smaller units. Moreover, there are three movements from liter to milliliter. The rule
for this is like rule #1 in converting length or weight. Hence, we must move the
decimal point of the given quantity three movements to the right.
49. 5 0 0 L = 49 500 mL
kL hL daL L dL cL mL
There are two movements to the left from mL to dL. So, apply two
decimal movements of the given quantity to the left also. So,
58 0 0 0 mL = 580 dL
Converting Units of Measurement for Volume from Metric to Metric (in terms of
cubic meter)
Do you still remember the procedure we did in converting area? If yes, this
will be easier to understand. Recall that area is of 2 dimensions while volume is
three. When we are speaking of a cubic figure, all dimensions are of the same length
right? Whenever we increased one edge, it deformed the cubic figure and becomes
another solid figure. To maintain its cubeness, whatever length is added to the
length, same increase must be for the width and height.
Also, recall the multiplicative identity we discussed. If it’s possible to have 45
x 1 = 45, 45 x 1 x 1 = 45 also, we can expand the property by multiplying the number
45 by 1’s for 3 times or more. To illustrate further what am I trying to tell you, let’s
work on example number 23 and where cubic units in metric units are converted
from one to another.
Illustrative Example 3: How to convert 21.7 cubic meters to cubic centimeter?
Method 1: Using unit fraction
Recall: 1m = 100cm this implies 1m3 = 1 000 000cm3 that is,
100𝑐𝑚 100𝑐𝑚 100𝑐𝑚
1 m3 = x x = 100cm x 100cm x 100cm or
1𝑚 1𝑚 1𝑚
100𝑐𝑚 3 (100𝑐𝑚)3
1 m3 =( ) =1 m3 x = 100 x 100 x 100 cm3 = 1 000 000cm3
1𝑚 1𝑚3
1000000𝑐𝑚3
Shortly, the unit fraction to use is so we have
1𝑚3
1000000𝑐𝑚3
21.7m3 x = 21.7 x 1 000 000 cm3 = 21 700 000cm3
1𝑚3
km hm dam m dm cm mm
Observe that there are two movements from meter to centimeter. Based on
rule #1, we must move the decimal point of the given quantity six movements to the
right(that is, 2 x 3 = 6). Hence,
Just add zeros on the spaces created after the decimal point is moved
Illustrative Example 4: Convert 860 000 000 cubic millimeters to cubic meter.
Method 1: Using unit fraction
Recall: 1m = 1000mm, this implies 1m3 = 1 000 000 000mm3 that is,
1000𝑚 1000𝑚 1000𝑚
1m3 = x x = 1000mm x 1000mm x 1000mm
1𝑚 1𝑚 1𝑚
= 1000000000mm3
1𝑚3
Shortly, the unit fraction to use is so we have
1000000000𝑚𝑚3
1𝑚3 860000000𝑚3
860 000 000 mm3 x = = 0.86 m3
1000000000𝑚𝑚3 1000000000𝑚𝑚3
Method 2: Aided by Metric Converter
Same metric converter must be used. The thing to keep in mind this time is
the direction and number of movements of the decimal point of the given quantity
that must be the same with the direction and thrice the number of movements of the
units in the metric converter.
In this, note that we are converting a smaller unit to a larger unit (so, the
movement is going to the left) and there are three movements from millimeter to
meter in the metric converter. Meaning to say we must move the decimal point 9
times (that is 3 x 3) to the left
km hm dam m dm cm mm
So,
8 6 0 0 0 0 0 0 0 𝑚𝑚3 = 0.86 𝑚3
4 𝑞𝑡. 2 𝑝𝑡. 2𝑐
1 gal. x x x = 2 x 2 x 4 c = 16 c
1gal. 1 qt. 1 pt.
1 𝑔𝑎𝑙.
Unit fraction to use:
16 c
Now we have,
1 𝑔𝑎𝑙. 512 𝑔𝑎𝑙.
512 c x = = 32 gal.
16 c 16
60𝑠
24 min x = 24 x 60s = 1 440s
1 min.
Now, it’s your turn! Do the provided activities to master the lesson.
