Lab 2

The document describes an experiment to determine the volume of a drop of water delivered from a burette. A burette was used to deliver 50, 75, 100, and 150 drops of water into a beaker, and the volume of water dispensed was calculated by recording the burette readings before and after each trial. The results showed that 50 drops of water is approximately 3cm3 in volume, and the volume of a single drop was calculated to be 0.04cm3.

Experiment: Volume of a drop of water

Aim: To find the volume of a drop of water delivered from a burette

Apparatus: one 50cm3 burette, one 100cm3 beaker

Procedure:
1) The burette was thoroughly washed with a liquid detergent, followed by tap
water and was rinsed with distilled water.
2) The burette was filled to eye level with water and the initial reading was recorded
to the nearest 0.5cm3
3) The stopcock of the burette was adjusted so that the water in the burette ran out
drop by drop and 50 drops of water was delivered into to the beaker. The new
reading was recorded after delivering 50 drops.
4) The above procedure was repeated to find the volume of
a) 75 drops of water
b) 100 drops of water
c) 150 drops of water

Table of results:

Number of 50 75 1003 1503

drops
Final burette 22cm3 23cm3 24cm3 26cm3
reading/cm3
Initial burette 19cm3 22cm3 23cm3 24cm3
reading/cm3
Total volume of 3cm3 4m3 5cm3 7cm3
drops/cm3

Calculations: Final burette reading – initial burette reading = total volume of drops

Observations: 50 drops of water is about 3cm3

Precautions:
1. Read measurements at eye level
2. Wear PPE
3. Be aware of surroundings

Discussion: The results show that the volume of fifty drops of water vary between
2cm3 and 3cm3
Reflection: I discovered that
Limitations: A random error was that my partner failed to let only one drop of water
leave the burette and instead delivered a stream of water go.
Conclusion: The volume of a drop of water delivered from a burette was 0.04cm3
