Introduction:
This lesson covers the features of the Service Technician Workbench
(STW) program.

Objectives:
After completion of this lesson the student will be able to:

screen.
4. Access Service Report.
5. Identify how to transfer Service Report information to DBS.

STW consists of the following applications:

STW has a process reporting feature that tracks the path and steps the technician
used with each of the STW software tools. Also, when connected to the Internet, a
feedback feature can automatically send recommendations, corrections, or
comments back to Caterpillar. Feedback may also be accomplished by transferring
files on a disc to a connected computer.

The Service Information System (SIS) allows the technician to search and view
service information and create parts lists. SIS also integrates with the Dealer
Business System (DBS).

SIS is accessed within STW by selecting the SIS icon (arrow).

SIS contains information equal to approximately 21,000 books, 1.7 million


graphics and over 750,000 part numbers. SIS includes information from parts
manuals, service manuals, schematics, service tools, and periodicals such as service
magazines and engine news.

Caterpillar Electronic Technician (Cat ET) supports over 1200 Electronic Control
Modules. It supports all of Caterpillar's electronics, providing diagnostic codes,
event codes, real-time status parameters, calibrations, and ECM configuration
information.

Caterpillar DataView allows technicians to read information from individual


sensors installed by the technician on Caterpillar products. DataView reads and
records information from these analog and digital sensor inputs such as temperature,
pressure, blowby, frequency, and pulse width modulated signals.

Component Based Troubleshooting (CBT) is designed to help the technician


troubleshoot symptoms and codes for Caterpillar engines and machines. After
identifying a symptom, the technician is presented with a list of components that, if
not operating properly, may cause the symptom.

By using the information provided for each component, the technician can identify
the root cause of the symptom and fix the problem. The technician is also presented
with a list of available ECMs and codes for the selected model to troubleshoot
diagnostic codes. In addition, CBT gives the technician links to related information
for symptoms and codes in SIS.

The Technical Analysis inspection program is designed to increase engine and


machine productivity and availability for customers by inspecting the health and
condition of the machine. The result is completion of necessary service before
failure.

Caterpillar dealers perform TA1 and TA2 types of analysis.

TA1 analysis consists of visual inspections of the machine systems.


TA2 analysis can be used to take technical snapshots of the machine systems.

TA1 and TA2 are accessed within STW by selecting the TA icon (arrow).

The electronic Service Report is a tool that automates the service reporting
procedure by logging permanent information as it occurs, thereby saving the
technician much repetitive and unnecessary writing. The electronic Service Report
is a support tool to document equipment service.

Also, Cat ET text, graphics, and digital images can be attached to the Service
Report.

As information is gathered, an electronic Service Report is generated and portions


of the report are automatically completed. This automated process saves the
technician from performing many routine tasks.

Service Report is accessed within STW by selecting the Service Report icon
(arrow).

The Cat ET license automatically transfers when STW is installed on computer with an
existing licensed copy of ET.

If STW has not been licensed, it will display this message during start-up.

Clicking OK (arrow) will open the licensing window.

License Window

If STW is not licensed, the Electronic Technician (1) will appear in light gray. Cat
ET appears in black and is enabled when the License Key has been properly
entered.

The License window (2) displays information that will be needed in addition to the
computer's serial number. A "license key" is entered into the License Key text box
to activate all features of STW.

To obtain, change, or transfer a program license, use Web Licensing by selecting


the link (3) from the License screen.

During STW installation, the following three icons will be added to the computer's
desktop:

1) STW User Administration


2) SIS Users
3) Service Technician Workbench

If an icon for SIS Windows was on the desktop, it would be removed from the
desktop and SIS would be available through STW.

Once the STW has been installed, locate the Workbench User Administration icon
on the PC's desktop and double click on it.

Adding a User

Use the identical login name and password as assigned to the same user within SIS.
This enables Service Technician Workbench to log into SIS automatically.

Complete the Dealer Information section which is automatically included with


Service Report and Feedback.

To add users, enter User ID and employee information, and then click Add (arrow).
A User Password prompt will need to be set.

To start STW, locate the program icon (arrow) on the desktop and double click.

STW Login

The STW Login window is displayed. The STW Login window is the window used
to provide a single sign-on for all Workbench applications.

Product ID

Entering at least the serial number prefix for a specific machine allows STW to
provide links to the applications that are available for that machine. SIS will also
need a serial number prefix when SIS is opened.

Serial number, arrangement, and work order number may be entered into the
Product Identification window. The Prefix/Serial Number determines which
applications are displayed on the left side of the screen. The information in the
Product ID window populates Current Session information, Service Report header,
and Feedback information.

A serial number prefix, or full serial number, must be entered to use CBT, TA I &
TA II, Challenger Technician, M300 Technician, or to troubleshoot diagnostic
codes using Cat ET.

If the serial number information is unavailable, click on Models (arrow) to view a


list of available models.

Models Selection

The Model Selection window is used to locate model and serial number. Select a
Family, and then select a Model's serial number. Click OK to populate the serial
number prefix or Cancel to close.

and then click OK.

Home Page

The Launch Pad (icons on the left side of the screen) displays only the applications
that are installed, licensed, and are valid for the serial number entered. The STW
Home icon (1) returns the user to the STW Home page from any STW application.

The Current Session information block (2) reflects the information entered in the
Product Identification window.

The Status Bar (3) displays the serial number, model and status of the current
application.

Home Page

The Tool Bar icons (located across the top left side of the screen) allow quick
access to some menu functions. Icons are added to the basic STW Tool Bar when
an application or report is activated.

A navigation panel (arrow) is displayed on the left side of the STW Home page.

Common Tasks includes two sub-topics. Change Current Session allows access to
the Product Identification window to restart a STW session. WinFlash will access a
WinFlash session within Cat ET.

Expand the Presentations topic (1) to choose to view What's New in STW for the
current release, STW Basics, or available training.

The Support topic (2) has two sub-topics. The Help Desk displays contact
information if assistance is needed on any STW application. License Information
displays the window for entering the License Key.

Open Service Report

The STW Service Report provides the means to record the activities performed
within STW applications.

When the STW Service Report icon (arrow) is selected, STW checks if the Siebel
Field Service is installed on the local computer. If it is installed, STW will launch
Siebel Field Service, otherwise it will launch the STW Service Report. A file
containing the Activity Summary and saved ECM codes read from Diagnostic
Advisor will be the only parts of the STW Service Report available for Siebel Field
Service inclusion.

A new Service Report is begun when starting STW or when starting a New Session.
To continue working with a Service Report at a later date, the Service Report must
be bookmarked.

Edit Report Sections

You can edit sections of the STW Service Report by clicking one of the gray Edit
buttons located to the right of each section's title within the report, or click the Edit
Report icon on the toolbar.

Segment 01 is the default segment (1).

The service report can be a multi segment report. To Add, Rename, or Delete a
report, select any of the three icons (2) located in the bottom left of the screen.

Upload Utility Icon

A SIMS DBS Upload Utility can be optionally installed to automate the transferring
of data from .XML format Service Reports into DBS. The utility is a separate
install located on the STW CD and places an icon on the computer's desktop. The
SIMS DBS Upload Utility is installed separately after the STW install.

Use the SIMS DBS Upload Utility icon (arrow) to open and then transfer data
entered in the service report to DBS.

File Selection

Files are displayed (1) to allow selection of the .XML reports to process. Use the
Shift-click method to select a range of reports. Use the Ctrl-click method to select
individual reports or click one service report file to upload an individual service
report. After selecting the desired report(s), clicking the Process Reports button (2)
begins the processing of the reports using a batch process to error check reports and
deliver data to the DBS database.

The latest version of the SIMS DBS upload utility is located in the Program File >
Caterpillar Inc. > SIMS DBS Upload Utility folder.

The SIMS DBS Upload Utility updates the SIMS portion of DBS, but does not
update the DBS Work Order Header information. A change to the SMU field
within SIMS will then update that field in the DBS Work Order Header.

Verification

Files will be validated for correct information. In the case of a bad record, the user
will be prompted to fix the problem through the "Error in Processing" window.

Files are validated for the correct information. If an error is found, this screen
presents the options of editing the report to correct the indicated error and
resubmitting, ignoring the report in error, or canceling the entire update.

The results of transferring the data to DBS are displayed.

Once the upload is completed, a confirmation window displays the results.

Toolbar Icon

If you must temporarily stop before work is complete, Workbench allows you to
store your locations and any data that is related to the operation you are performing.
On shared computers, someone else may use the computer for another STW session.
Upon return, utilizing a Bookmark allows quicker return to the screens being used
earlier.

Bookmarks allow re-opening SIS and other applications to the pages that were open
when a bookmark was created. Bookmarks can be created at any location within
STW. Select File, Bookmarks from the dropdown menu or click on the Bookmarks
icon (arrow) in the Toolbar. With the addition of Session From Saved Report,
Bookmarks are less necessary.

Bookmark

Bookmarks can be organized by storing them under different folders. This allows
multiple users to keep track of their own bookmarks or tracking by folders for each
customer.

The Bookmarks window is displayed. This window displays a list of folders and
any existing bookmarks. If multiple technicians share a computer, folders could be
created for each technician.

To create a new folder, choose File, New, New Folder from the drop-down menu.

The New Folder window is displayed. Type in the folder's name and press the OK
button.

Create Bookmark

You may want to use the serial number to name the bookmark. This will help you
identify it later.

To store a bookmark in the new folder, click on the new folder to highlight it, and
then click in the text box to the right of Name and type a bookmark file name. Then
click the Create button.

Locate Bookmark

To retrieve a bookmark, click on the Bookmarks icon on the toolbar to display the
Bookmarks window. Click on the "+" sign next to the desired folder to expand the
folder and display its contents.

Locate the desired bookmark and double click to reopen it.

The Bookmarks window will close and the bookmarked location opens within
STW. You can continue working with the screens, data, and service report.

Importing / Exporting Bookmarks

It is easier to create and copy folders from the desktop. Create a folder and name it
something easy to remember, such as Export.

Create the folder to receive the bookmarks before beginning the export bookmark
process.

The new folder can be created on a shared network drive if the bookmarks are being
backed up or stored.

Toolbar Icon

You can also select File from the menu bar and select Bookmarks (arrow). This
will bring up the Bookmarks window.

Export Bookmarks

The Bookmarks window allows various methods to select the files and folders that
are to be included in the Export window. Common Windows functionality, such as
using the shift and ctrl keys, as well as single mouse clicks can be used to select
files and folders. A SelectAll (1) choice is also available through the Edit window.

Select the file or folder to be exported with the left mouse button. Hold the
keyboard Ctrl key and left click to select multiple files and folders. Hold the
keyboard Shft key and left click to select a range of files and folders. When a folder
is selected, all files within the folder will be selected.

Select Edit from the menu and then choose SelectAll to export all bookmarks. All
bookmarks will go to one folder. De-select folders and select individual bookmarks
or select one folder at a time to export.

Al (2) will select all files in the folder.

Select File and Export

Select File and then select Export (arrow). Within the Export window select each
file to be exported with the left mouse button and select browse to choose the folder
to export the files to. You can choose any folder on the PC or you can select a
folder on a different drive. Select Export and the required files will be created in
the selected folder. All bookmarks will be stored in the folder selected.

Import Bookmarks

You need to select a folder before selecting the Import button under the File menu.
You can create a new folder or you can select an existing folder. All of the
bookmarks in the folder that were exported from the first computer will be placed in
the folder selected to receive the imports.

Select an existing folder with the left mouse button to import the bookmarks to that
folder or create a new folder by selecting File and then selecting New and New
Folder. Type the name of the new folder and click Create. Left mouse click
(select) the folder to receive the bookmarks. Select File and select Import.

Select the folder/files to be imported

You will not have the option to select individual bookmarks during the import
process. All of the bookmarks will be imported to the folder selected in the first
step of the import process.

Select File and Import (1), Browse (2) for the folder that contains the bookmarks to
be imported. Select the folder and Select OK. Select the files to be imported from
within the Import window and select Import. Close the import window. Double-
click a bookmark to open it.

To provide feedback to Caterpillar concerning any of the Workbench applications,


click on the Feedback button (arrow) on the Tool Bar.

Feedback Form

Some users might not be connected to a network while they are using Service
Technician Workbench. If you click on the "Save" button, your message is stored
on the hard drive of the computer. You are prompted to send the feedback stored on
the hard drive when the allotted space for feedback is close to being full or
whenever you connect to the network.

If your computer has a network connection, you can immediately send your
message by clicking on the "Send/Receive" button. This will send the current
message as well as any that have been saved on the hard drive. Service Technician
Workbench will also check for any feedback replies that have been sent to you.

Within the Feedback Form include detailed information about the issue or
recommendation, then click on the Save button.

Storage Space

If you choose to save your feedback on your computer's hard drive, the Thank you
for using Feedback window appears and displays the amount of feedback storage
space available and storage space used on the computer. The feedback is stored on
your computer's hard drive and can be sent or exported later.

Send Feedback

If you do not want to wait to send the feedback until you are prompted, you can
send the feedback immediately by clicking the feedback button (arrow) on the
toolbar.

When STW starts, a reminder may be displayed to send saved Feedback. Feedback
may be sent at anytime without waiting to be prompted.

Click the Feedback button again to access the feedback window.

Send or Export

There are two ways to send feedback. If connected to the Internet, send the
feedback directly, otherwise export the feedback to a disc or flash drive and have
the feedback sent from a connected computer.
