1. The dairy industry in India is a major contributor to the agricultural GDP and livelihood. Milk production has been steadily increasing and stands at 198.4 MT in 2019-20. 2. Consumption varies widely by state with Punjab having the highest consumption per capita per day at 1221 grams. 3. The milk is handled by households, organized cooperatives and private players. Key organizations promoting the dairy industry are NDRI, NDDB, and state milk federations. 4. The dairy industry provides employment and livelihood to millions of people in India especially in rural areas. New dairy products are also being developed to meet consumer demand.
