Model: M500 Series with 9” Screen
RS-232 Communication Procedure using ProComm Plus

Overview
This procedure will instruct you on how to back up and reload all of the data on a step-by-step basis.

Tools Needed
• Laptop computer
• ProComm Plus
• Tripp Lite USB to RS-232 adapter
• RS-232 cable

Note: If you are working on an MHI machine and it has M-NAP programming software you will need to back up the NC Data and the
M-NAP parameters separately. Please see Tools Needed and Appendix 2 below

Instructions
I. Connecting the RS-232 adapter, RS-232 cable, Laptop and machine
A. Verify the RS-232 Cable configuration

(TD) 2 2 (RD)
(SD) 3 3 (SD)
(RTS) 4 7 (RTS)
(CTS) 5 (CTS)
(DSR) 6 1 (DCD)
(DCD) 8 4 (DTR)
(DTR) 20 6 (DSR)
(SG) 7 5 (SG)

B. Laptop, USB adapter to DB9, RS-232 Cable and RS-232 DB25 machine port
1. Plug the USB adapter into the laptop USB port
2. Plug the DB9 connector on the RS-232 cable into the DB9 connector on the USB adapter
3. Plug the DB25 connector on the RS-232 cable into the DB25 connector port on the
machine
II. Open ProComm Plus and Verify the ProComm Plus settings
A. Open ProComm Plus on the laptop
1. Click on the Windows Start in the lower left corner of the laptop screen.
2. Click on the ProComm Plus program icon
3. Click on the ProComm Plus execute icon
B. Verify the ‘Quick Select Line’ on the ProComm Plus window.
1. Click on View and check ‘Quick Select Line’
2. The ‘Quick Select Line’ is displayed on the bottom of the ProComm Plus Window.
3. The ‘Quick Select Line’ should display VT-100, ASCII, direct connect-COM1, 9600, E72

III. Set up Data In/ Data Out Ports, I/O and Edit Lock Parameters
A. Access the I/O parameters
1. Press the hard key button labeled, [DIAG IN/OUT].
2. Press the soft key button labeled (MENU) two times.
3. Press the soft key button labeled (PARAM). (You should see (I/O BASE PARAM) page
(1/4).

B. Set “DATA IN” for Port 1 (CH1) and Device 0 from I/O parameters
1. Press the hard key button labeled [1].
2. Press the hard key button labeled [>] to move the cursor over.
3. Press the hard key button labeled [1].
4. Press the hard key button labeled [>] to move the cursor over.
5. Press the hard key button labeled [0].
6. Press the hard key button labeled [INPUT].
7. It should look as follows: #(1) DATA(1) (0)

C. Set ‘DATA OUT’ for Port 1 (CH1) and Device 0 from I/O parameters
1. Press the hard key button labeled [2].
2. Press the hard key button labeled [>] to move the cursor over.
3. Press the hard key button labeled [1].
4. Press the hard key button labeled [>] to move the cursor over.
5. Press the hard key button labeled [0].
6. Press the hard key button labeled [INPUT].
7. It should look as follows: #(2) DATA(1) (0)
8. After pressing the hard key labeled [INPUT], you should see the following.

D. Set the Device 0 parameters, from the I/O Parameters


1. Press the right most, soft key button labeled (>) Page Key.
2. Set the parameters according to the following:

E. Turn off Edit Lock B.


1. Press the hard key button labeled [TOOL PARAM].
2. Press the soft key button labeled (MENU).
3. Press the soft key button labeled (CONTROL).
4. Press the right most, soft key button labeled (>) Page Key until you locate 40 EDIT LOCK
B.
5. Type 40 in the # ( ).
6. Press the hard key button labeled [INPUT]. (EDIT LOCK B should become highlighted).

F. Turn off Edit Lock C.


1. Press the hard key button labeled, [DIAG IN/OUT].
2. Press the soft key button labeled, (PLC/IF).
3. Key in under “Device”, 1001. Then move the cursor to the right two times and key in the
letter “M” under Mode.
4. Press the hard key button labeled [INPUT] and the (1001) ( ) (M) will disappear.
5. Press the hard key button labeled [TOOL PARAM].
6. Press the soft key button labeled (MENU) until you locate the soft key button labeled
(BASE).
7. Press the soft key button labeled (BASE).
8. Press the right most, soft key button labeled (>) Page Key until you locate 7 Edit Lock C.
9. Type 7 and 0 in the #( ) DATA ( ) so it will look like #( 7 ) DATA ( 0 ).
10. Press the hard key button labeled [INPUT]. It should show edit lock C set to 0 on the
screen.

IV. Access and download Data from the NC. (Programs, Tool Data, Parameters and Maintenance
files)
A. Access the Data Output Screen
1. Press the hard key button labeled, [DIAG IN/OUT].
2. Press the soft key button labeled (OUTPUT). You should see (DATA OUTPUT) in the
upper left side of the screen as shown below.
3. Set up the laptop using ProComm Plus to receive data and give it a file name.

B. Output All Programs


1. Type 1, cursor [>] and ALL in the #( ) DATA ( ) so it will look like #( 1 ) DATA ( ALL).
2. Press the hard key button labeled [INPUT].
3. OUTPUT ALL PROGRAMS should appear on the screen.
4. When all programs have been output, DATA OUT COMPLETE should appear on the
screen.

C. Output a Single Program (For example program number 123)


1. Follow Steps IV A1 thru A3 for accessing Programs, setting the laptop to receive data and
setting a file name.
2. Type 1, cursor [>] and 123 in the #( ) DATA ( ) so it will look like #( 1 ) DATA ( 123).
3. Press the hard key button labeled [INPUT].
4. OUTPUT PROGRAM 123 should appear on the screen.
5. When all programs have been output, DATA OUT COMPLETE should appear on the
screen.

D. Output a range of programs (For example program number 123 through 789)
1. Follow Steps IV A1 thru A3 for accessing the PROGRAMS, setting the laptop to receive
data and setting a file name.
2. Type 1, cursor [>] and 123, cursor [>] and 789 in the #( ) DATA ( ) so it will look like #(
1 ) DATA ( 123) (789).
3. Press the hard key button labeled [INPUT].
4. OUTPUT PROGRAM should appear on the screen
5. When the range of programs have been output, DATA OUT COMPLETE should appear on
the screen.

E. Output all TOOL DATA


1. Follow Steps IV A1 thru A3 for accessing the TOOL DATA, setting the laptop to receive
data and setting a file name.
2. Type 2, cursor [>] and ALL in the #( ) DATA ( ) so it will look like #( 2 ) DATA ( ALL).
3. Press the hard key button labeled [INPUT].
4. OUTPUT TOOL DATA should appear on the screen
5. When the TOOL DATA has been output, DATA OUT COMPLETE should appear on the
screen.
F. Output PARAMETERS
1. Follow Steps IV A1 thru A3 for accessing the PARAMETERS, setting the laptop to receive
data and setting a file name.
2. Type 3 in the #( ) DATA ( ) so it will look like #( 3 ) DATA ( ).
3. Press the hard key button labeled [INPUT].
4. OUTPUT PARAMETERS should appear on the screen
5. When the PARAMETERS have been output, DATA OUT COMPLETE should appear on
the screen.

V. Stop the Ladder and Output the Maintenance Files.


A. Stopping the Ladder
1. Press the Emergency stop pushbutton switch.
2. Toggle (move) the Dipswitch 2 on the QX141 to the off (right side) to stop the ladder from
running.

B. Output the ALL 1 Maintenance File


1. Follow Steps IV A1 thru A3 for accessing DATA OUTPUT, setting the laptop to receive
data and setting a file name.
2. Type 99 and ALL 1 in the #( ) DATA ( ) so it will look like #( 99 ) DATA ( ALL1).
3. Press the hard key button labeled [INPUT].
4. OUTPUT DATA should appear on the screen
5. When the ALL 1 Maintenance file has been output, DATA OUT COMPLETE should
appear on the screen.

C. Output the ALL 2 Maintenance File


1. Follow Steps IV A1 thru A3 for accessing DATA OUTPUT, setting the laptop to receive
data and setting a file name.
2. Type 99 and ALL 2 in the #( ) DATA ( ) so it will look like #( 99 ) DATA ( ALL2).
3. Press the hard key button labeled [INPUT].
4. OUTPUT DATA should appear on the screen
5. When the ALL 2 Maintenance file has been output, OUTPUT COMPLETE should appear
on the screen

D. Output the ALL 3 Maintenance File


1. Follow Steps IV A1 thru A3 for accessing DATA OUTPUT, setting the laptop to receive
data and setting a file name.
2. Type 99 and ALL 3 in the #( ) DATA ( ) so it will look like #( 99 ) DATA ( ALL3).
3. Press the hard key button labeled [INPUT].
4. OUTPUT DATA should appear on the screen
5. When the ALL 3 Maintenance file has been output, DATA OUT COMPLETE should appear
on the screen
6. Toggle (move) the Dipswitch 2 on the QX141 to the on (left side) to start the ladder.
7. If you changed, the Device 0 settings from what the customer settings were, please set
them back to what the customer had them set to.

Note: Depending on the type of control and the software version, you may not be able
to output ALL1, ALL2 and ALL3. For example: You may only be able to output only
ALL2.

VI. Upload Data to the NC (Programs, Tool Data, Parameters and Maintenance Data)
A. Access the DATA INPUT screen
1. Press the hard key button labeled, [DIAG IN/OUT].
2. Press the soft key button labeled (INPUT). You should see (DATA INPUT) in the upper left
side of the screen as shown below.
3. Set up the laptop using ProComm Plus to transfer data.

B. Input All Programs


1. Type 1, cursor [>] and ALL in the #( ) DATA ( ) so it will look like #( 1 ) DATA ( ALL).
2. Press the hard key button labeled [INPUT].
3. INPUT ALL PROGRAMS should appear on the screen.
4. When all programs have been input, DATA IN COMPLETE should appear on the screen.

C. Input a Single Program (For example program number 123)


1. Follow Steps VI A1 thru A3 for accessing Programs, setting the laptop to transmit a file.
2. Type 1, cursor [>] and 123 in the #( ) DATA ( ) so it will look like #( 1 ) DATA ( 123).
3. Press the hard key button labeled [INPUT].
4. INPUT PROGRAM 123 should appear on the screen.
5. When all programs have been input, DATA IN COMPLETE should appear on the screen.

D. Input a range of programs (For example program number 123 through 789)
1. Follow Steps VI A1 thru A3 for accessing the PROGRAMS, setting the laptop to transmit a
file.
2. Type 1, cursor [>] and 123, cursor [>] and 789 in the #( ) DATA ( ) so it will look like #(
1 ) DATA ( 123) (789).
3. Press the hard key button labeled [INPUT].
4. INPUT PROGRAM should appear on the screen
5. When the range of programs have been input, DATA IN COMPLETE should appear on the
screen.

E. Input all TOOL DATA


1. Follow Steps VI A1 thru A3 for accessing the TOOL DATA, setting the laptop to transmit a
file.
2. Type 2, cursor [>] and ALL in the #( ) DATA ( ) so it will look like #( 2 ) DATA ( ALL).
3. Press the hard key button labeled [INPUT].
4. INPUT TOOL DATA should appear on the screen
5. When the TOOL DATA has been input, DATA IN COMPLETE should appear on the
screen.

F. Input the PARAMETERS


1. Follow Steps VI A1 thru A3 for accessing the PARAMETERS, setting the laptop to transmit
a file.
2. Type 3 in the #( ) DATA ( ) so it will look like #( 3 ) DATA ( ).
3. Press the hard key button labeled [INPUT].
4. INPUT PARAMETERS should appear on the screen.
5. When the PARAMETERS have been input, DATA IN COMPLETE should appear on the
screen.

VII. Stop the Ladder and Input the Maintenance Files.


E. Stopping the Ladder
1. Press the Emergency stop pushbutton switch.
2. Toggle (move) the Dipswitch 2 on the QX141 to the off (right side) to stop the ladder from
running.

F. Input the ALL 1 Maintenance File


1. Follow Steps VI A1 thru A3 for accessing DATA INPUT, setting the laptop to transmit a
file.
2. Type 99 and ALL 1 in the #( ) DATA ( ) so it will look like #( 99 ) DATA ( ALL1).
3. Press the hard key button labeled [INPUT].
4. INPUT DATA should appear on the screen
5. When the ALL 1 Maintenance file has been input, DATA IN COMPLETE should appear
on the screen.

G. Input the ALL 2 Maintenance File


1. Follow Steps VI A1 thru A3 for accessing DATA INPUT, setting the laptop to transmit a
file.
2. Type 99 and ALL 2 in the #( ) DATA ( ) so it will look like #( 99 ) DATA ( ALL2).
3. Press the hard key button labeled [INPUT].
4. INPUT DATA should appear on the screen
5. When the ALL 2 Maintenance file has been input, INPUT COMPLETE should appear on
the screen

H. Output the ALL 3 Maintenance File


1. Follow Steps VI A1 thru A3 for accessing DATA INPUT, setting the laptop to transmit a
file.
2. Type 99 and ALL 3 in the #( ) DATA ( ) so it will look like #( 99 ) DATA ( ALL3).
3. Press the hard key button labeled [INPUT].
4. INPUT DATA should appear on the screen
5. When the ALL 3 Maintenance file has been input, DATA IN COMPLETE should appear on
the screen.
6. Toggle (move) the Dipswitch 2 on the QX141 to on (left side) to start the ladder
7. Release the Emergency stop switch.
8. If you changed, the Device 0 settings from what the customer settings were, please set
them back to what the customer had them set to.

Appendix 2

Instructions

I. M-NAP parameters back up


A. Backing up the M-NAP parameters
1. You should already have your laptop, Tripp Lite USB to RS-232 adapter and RS-232
cable already connected to the same port you used for backing up the NC Data. If not,
please do so now. Also set up ProComm Plus to receive a file, give it a name and
location for storage
2. Press the hard key button labeled, [M-NAP].
3. You should now see the M-NAP Start screen (see Figure 1 below)
4. Press the soft key button labeled (5. FILES EDIT)
5. You should now see the FILE EDIT screen ( see Figure 2 below)
6. Press the soft key button labeled (7. FILE I/O)
7. You should now see the FILE I/O screen ( see Figure 3 below)
8. The cursor should be located in the space between the parentheses on Line 1 I/O.
9. In order to back up the M-NAP parameters you will enter the number 2.
10. Press the soft key button labeled (5. RUN)
11. You now see the M-NAP parameter file being backed up on your laptop
