Course Outline MEB 3013 Sep 2021

This document provides a course outline for Heat Transfer (MEB 3013) taking place in the Department of Mechanical Engineering at UNIVERSITI TEKNOLOGI PETRONAS in September 2021. The course will cover key concepts in heat transfer including conduction, convection, radiation and heat exchangers. Students will learn steady-state and transient heat conduction, forced/natural convection, radiation coefficients, and the combination of internal and external heat exchanger flows. Assessment will consist of assignments, quizzes, a project, labs, tests, and a final exam worth 50% of the total grade. Lectures and labs will take place over 12 weeks covering the fundamental topics and their applications in heat transfer

Learning Outcomes:
At the end of this course, students should be able to:

1. Analyse heat transfer problems using appropriate assumptions, equations/charts to determine steady and
transient heat conductions.
2. Investigate the rate of conduction, convection and radiation heat transfer problem with proper assumptions
and correlations of energy systems.
3. Design a heat exchanger to meet specific performance needSynopsis:

This course covers the fundamental concepts of heat transfer:

 Conduction – steady-state and transient heat conduction of plane wall, cylinder and sphere (1-D and 2-D).
 Convection – forced/natural and internal/external convection of plates and tubes.
 Radiation – view factors, radiation coefficient.
 Heat Exchangers – combination of internal and external flows.

Attendance:

Attendance to lecture, tutorial and lab sessions will be recorded. Students must attend at least 90% of the
sessions. Those who failed to obey might be barred from taking the final examination.
