1. Polar bears’ primary habitat is sea ice. They use it as a platform to hunt seals. All 19
subpopulations of polar bears have experienced some degree of ice loss. Temperatures in the
Arctic are rising at least twice as fast as the global average and sea ice cover is diminishing by
nearly four per cent per decade. The loss of sea ice affects polar bears’ ability to find food,
studies show. With the ice retreating earlier in spring and forming later in winter, the bears have
less time to hunt prey and have to go without food for longer. These rising temperatures are a
direct result of climate change. There are other impacts of climate change on polar bears, too.
Warming has been linked to increases in contamination and exposure to diseases. Unusually
warm weather in winter can cause dens to collapse, which females build to birth and protect
their young. Thus, it is clear that climate change has a drastic negative impact on the lives of
polar bears.

2. Migration is a feature of social and economic life across many countries. Migrants accounted
for 47% of the increase in the workforce in the United States and 70% in Europe over the past
ten years. Similarly, migrants contribute more in taxes and social contributions than they
receive as benefits, and those who migrate seeking employment contribute greatly towards
government funds. Arriving with various skills and experience most migrants who travel for
employment purposes contribute greatly towards the productivity and quality of companies that
they migrate to. Although there are many who oppose the arrival of migrants to a country,
migration and migrants can lead to being an unparalleled blessing to any nation that receives
such migrants.

4. The fast, wild, and showy decade of the 1920s is sometimes called the Age of Flaming Youth,
because the influence and energy of young people was unleashed in a new way during this
period. Young people met in high schools and colleges. They gathered together and socialized
in ways their parents and grandparents never had, and they created styles and fads that were
imitated across the generations. In a world stunned by the devastation of World War I, the fun
and carefree freedom of the young was a welcome relief, and no style seemed too silly or
frivolous to become high fashion. The period following World War I was one of prosperity and
industrialization. Where once most adolescent children had to go to work, by the 1920s, many
went to high schools instead. For the first time, large numbers of young people spent a great
deal of time together. College enrollment also increased during the 1920s. These high school
and college students began to develop their own ways of dressing, talking, and having fun.

5. Poaching and the illegal trade of rhino horns have increased sharply since 2007 and remains one
of the major reasons rhinos are still endangered today. Poaching is big business, and well
organised criminal gangs are now well-equipped to track and kill rhinos. Habitat loss is the
other major threat to rhino populations. As more and more land is cleared for agriculture there is
less available space for rhinos to thrive in. Rhinos need a large area in which to feed and roam.
If rhino populations end up fragmented, with no safe ‘corridors’ to travel through, chances of
successful breeding and recovery will further decline. In the case of the critically endangered
Javan rhino, studies have shown that existing habitat is limited by both human encroachment
and the predominance of an invasive palm species called arenga. Known locally as Langkap, the
palm grows uncontrollably throughout the forest canopy, inhibiting the growth of plants that
rhinos eat.

SECTION 2 – ANSWERING QUESTIONS USING P.E.E.
1. The following passage has been taken from a story of suspense. Read the passage and
answer the question that follows.
The cabin had been abandoned for several years, which was why the rent was within her single-
parent budget. A faded ‘For Sale’ sign hung crookedly on a tree outside, mutely pleading for
new owners. It was not far from a small town, but the access road, eleven miles of deeply rutted,
treacherous trail, had probably discouraged buyers.
Around the cabin the weeds were waist high, and she had to carry the four- year-old as they
struggled down to the beach. A patch of scorched earth marked a firepit, and a picnic table
stood nearby, almost hidden in a thick stand of purple fireweed.
‘Mummy?’ Jenny’s voice, usually strident with first-grade exuberance, was soft, timid. ‘Do we
have to stay in this place? I don’t think I like it here.’
‘Nonsense, Jen. It’s just overgrown, lonely. No one has taken care of it for a long time. We’ll
clear a nice path down to the beach – see, there is a bit of a path under the weeds – then it will
be easier for you to walk. We can build a campfire tonight and have hot dogs and marshmallows.
It will be fun!’ She smiled at the child, wondering why her own voice had sounded so loud and
harsh.
The beach was beautiful; sandy and shallow for a long way out and nestled in a small cove that
kept the water calm and warm. While the children splashed and searched for frogs, she began
clearing the trail with a rusty, but still serviceable sickle she found near the picnic table.
Once, stopping work to wipe the sweat from her eyes and to check on the children, she glanced
up at the hillside behind her and saw, almost hidden among tall cedars, the dark bulk of another,
larger, cabin.
Curious, for no one had mentioned a second place close by, she called to the girls to stay out of
the water until she came back and pushed through the deep undergrowth on the hillside towards
the hidden cabin.
In the evening, sunburned and exhausted, the girls again crawled into bed early. She made
herself a cup of tea and with it walked down the now cleared path to the beach, admiring her
handiwork. She stayed until the sun began to set, watching the coloured rays slant off the water,
then, tired herself, she made her way back up the trail.
Explore the range of feelings the characters in this extract (the mom and two daughters)
experience on arriving and settling-in in their new home.

2. The following passage is part of a speech delivered in China in 1995 by Hillary Clinton,
wife of the American president at the time. In it she considers the issue of women’s rights.
Read the passage and answer the question that follows.
I would like to thank the Secretary General of the United Nations for inviting me to be part of
the United Nations Fourth World Conference on Women. This is truly a celebration – a
celebration of the contributions women make in every aspect of life: in the home, on the job, in
their communities, as mothers, wives, sisters, daughters, learners, workers, citizens and leaders.
It is also a coming together, much the way women come together every day in every country.
We come together in fields and in factories. In village markets and supermarkets. In living
rooms and board rooms.
Whether it is while playing with our children in the park, or washing clothes in a river, or taking
a break at the office water cooler, we come together and talk about our aspirations and concerns.
And time and again, our talk turns to our children and our families.
However different we may be, there is far more that unites us than divides us. We share a
common future. And we are here to find common ground so that we may help bring new dignity
and respect to women and girls all over the world – and in so doing, bring new strength and
stability to families as well.
By gathering in Beijing, we are focusing world attention on issues that matter most in the lives
of women and their families: access to education, health care, jobs, and credit, the chance to
enjoy basic legal and human rights and participate fully in the political life of their countries.
There are some who question the reason for this conference. Let them listen to the voices of
women in their homes, neighborhoods, and workplaces.
There are some who wonder whether the lives of women and girls matter to economic and
political progress around the globe. Let them look at the women gathered here and at Huairou –
the homemakers, nurses, teachers, lawyers, policymakers, and women who run their own
businesses.
Wasn’t it after the women’s conference in Nairobi ten years ago that the world focused for the
first time on the crisis of domestic violence?
Discuss how Hillary Clinton presents the main message of her speech to her audience.
