2011-2012 CE219FinExam

The document is an exam for a statics and strength of materials course containing 7 questions across two sections. Section A contains 4 questions asking students to calculate contact forces on inclined planes, axial forces in truss members, the range of loads maintaining equilibrium, and moments of inertia. Section B contains 3 questions asking students to use Mohr's circle to analyze stresses, calculate forces in a bi-material rod under thermal expansion, and draw shear force and bending moment diagrams. Students must answer 3 questions from Section A and 2 from Section B.

THE UNIVERSITY OF ZAMBIA.

UNIVERSITY FIRST SEMESTER EXAMINATION – NOVEMBER/DECEMBER 2011.

CE 219 : STATICS AND INTRODUCTION TO STRENGTH OF MATERIALS.

TIME: Three Hours. ANSWER: Any THREE from Section A, and Any TWO from
Section B. All questions carry equal marks (20 marks)

Section – A.
Question 1
The 50-kg homogenous sphere (Dia.=2m) rests on the 30o incline and bears
against the vertical wall B. Assuming all contact points to be smooth, calculate
the contact forces at A and B. [20 Marks]

Question 2
The 2-kN cylinder is held by the cable on the smooth surface of the truss as shown
in the figure below. Determine the axial forces in members 1, 2, and 3. [20
Marks]

1/4
Question 3
A 1400N block is supported by rope which is wrapped around a horizontal rod as
shown. Knowing that the coefficient of static friction between the rope and the
rod is 0.15, determine the range of values of P for which equilibrium is
maintained. [20 Marks]

Question 4
Determine Ix and Ixy of the area shown about the centroidal axes. You will need to
locate the centroid before computing the requested moments of inertia. Supply all
calculations in tabular format. [20 Marks]

2/4
Section – B.
Question 5
The figure below gives the state of stresses on the x-y planes at a point in a piece
of material in service. Using the Mohr Circle, answer the following questions:

(a) Determine the orientation of the principle planes. Show the plane in an
appropriate sketch. [6 Marks]
(b) Determine the principle stresses [4 Marks]
(c) Determine the maximum shear stress xy and the corresponding values of x
and y. [4 Marks]
(d) At what planes will the shear stress be half of the maximum? Show the
planes in appropriate sketches. [6 Marks]

Question 6
A rod consists of two parts that are made of steel and copper as shown in the
figure below. The elastic modulus and coefficient of thermal expansion for steel
are 200GPa and 11.7 x 10-6 per oC respectively and for copper 70 GPa and 21.6 x
10-6 per oC respectively. If the temperature of the rod is raised by 50oC, determine
the forces and stresses acting on the steel and copper parts of the rod. [20 Marks]

3/4
Question 7
Draw the shear force and bending moment diagrams for the beam and loading
shown. [20 Marks]
