INTRODUCTION

Known as one of Sorsogon's top tourist sites, Calintaan Island has a lot to offer, from its
pink sand beaches to the marine sanctuaries where you can witness a variety of rare fish and
shell species. Amazing sea caves and rock structures may be seen close to the islands. You may
enjoy yourself with friends, family, and coworkers at the recreational events and activities
provided by Calintaan Island. Calintaan Island is a peaceful, tranquil location.

Calintaan is located in the town of Matnog, Sorsogon, in the Bicol Region. The island is
famous for its semi-pink sand beach called Subic Beach. The sand in Subic Beach is a mixture of
white sand and crushed red pipe corals. Matnog, the southernmost municipality of Luzon Island,
was once described as a place where "you get a boat to go somewhere else." While it is true that
this town is the starting point for ships headed to Northern Samar and the rest of the Eastern
Visayas, people are discovering that there is so much more to Matnog than just being a gateway
port.

With the growing popularity of travel around the country, improving accommodations is
critical. This research will enhance the knowledge on designing a beach resort. Calintaan Island
is a God's creation that you may visit for pleasure, although it still needs a lot of island
renovation.

1.1 Background of the study

This research will serve as the basis for designing the whole beach resort. This research
will also guide the student toward a law-compliant and aesthetic beach resort.

A beach hotel is a destination for vacation and pleasure that is constructed on a beautiful
piece of land such as a beach. A playground, swimming pool, restaurant, cycling arena, and
sports center are all available at the beach resort. A resort is a place where people live or stay
that is different from their homes. So, they can have peace of mind and a rejuvenated body.
The resort also offers a variety of venues for activities such as sports, healthy activities
(yoga), conferences, religious activities, and business meetings. This resort can be a simple
resort or a luxury resort, and it can serve a variety of demands, including family and business
needs. Resorts are typically located in areas with a natural beach backdrop or in areas with
amenities such as golf courses and tennis courts.

Ancient Roman ruins demonstrate that vast luxurious houses were erected on stunning
beaches over 2,000 years ago. By this time, it appears that it was not just humans collecting
seafood, but also lucky aristocrats from the Patrician Class who had some nice shore time.
Swimming at the beach was not popular owing to worries of sea monsters and drowning, but
other popular activities were. Cool breezes, gorgeous panoramas at particularly stunning
spots along the beach, alfresco dining, drinking, and lavish parties were among them. (The
Complete History of the Beach, n.d.-b)

The rising popularity of therapeutic bathing was insufficient to ensure the growth of
beach resorts. A convergence of scientific and intellectual breakthroughs in the 1700s and
early 1800s resulted in a new appreciation of nature, particularly of the beaches and
mountains. Natural theologians, poets, and artists were encouraged by new theories about
landscape formation to find beauty in wild, untamed landscapes where previously only
ugliness and waste had been seen. (Seaside Resorts, 2022)

Bathers surged dramatically in the second half of the eighteenth century, and residents of
coastal towns responded by expanding and enhancing housing, transportation, and related
services: thus, the first seaside resorts sprang from preexisting villages. By 1789, sea bathing
was well established in areas like Brighton, Margate, and Scarborough, and the trend was
gaining traction across the Channel. Local businesses, municipal and occasionally national
government entities, and foreign investors like railway corporations collaborated in diverse
ways to build bathing facilities, hotels, casinos, public gardens, piers, and fun parks. A
"pleasure architecture" emerged, with fancy houses and public structures creating distinctive
urban landscapes, notably along the valued seaside; the view, of course, was crucial. (Seaside
Resorts, 2022)

Bathing was never the only activity enjoyed (or endured) by the sea. Seaside resorts
initially followed the design principles of inland spa towns, encouraging cultivated leisure in
libraries, aquariums, games rooms, and (in larger resorts) attending the theater or casino, but
outdoor pastimes triumphed: strolling on the sand and the pier, collecting shells, watching
fisher people at work, riding, sailing, hunting, and fishing, and socializing. (Seaside Resorts,
2022)

1.2 Statement of the Problem

Tourism is one of the country’s top foreign exchange-earners. The Department of Tourism
stated that the tourism industry has contributed an annual average income of more than ten
percent (10%) of the Gross National Income.

With the abundance of natural attractions found within the archipelago and with the ever-
increasing foreign investors embark on a project that will bolster tourism in our country.
GOALS AND OBJECTIVES

1.1 PROJECT OBJECTIVES:

a. To promote the appreciation of Philippine natural scenic spots.

b. To develop economic and financial opportunities.
c. To enhance our cultural values.

1.2 DESIGN OBJECTIVES:

a. To develop a design that can coordinate with an existing natural setting without
disturbing valuable resources.
b. To develop a design with efficient operational facilities that will set the phase for the
tourism industry.
c. To develop a design that will showcase Sorsoganon ingenuity and regional character.

SCOPE AND LIMITATIONS

The scope of the project shall include the following facilities:

a. Resort hotel facilities

b. Sports and Health facilities
c. Outdoor Recreational facilities
d. Cottages
e. Support facilities (to be shown in the site development)

e.1 Maintenance and Repair building

e.2 Water treatment building

e.3 Electrical & Mechanical building

SIGNIFICANCE OF THE RESEARCH

It is an established fact that beach resort facilities are the most frequent attraction to local
and foreign tourism. In line with his factor, a beach resort hotel complex is envisioned for
development and construction on Subic Island of Matnog, in the province of Sorsogon. With this
research at its operational level, the following assets shall evolve:

a. The natural attractions will be appreciated, enrich, and enjoyed.

b. Generation of financial opportunities.

c. To enhance our cultural value.

RESEARCH METHODOLOGY

The study uses descriptive research which aims to describe the data and its
characteristics. This type of research method includes the process of analyzing the flow and
concept of the study and finding the solution to the problem.

The procedure begins with examining the project's location and what should be examined
and followed since it would accommodate a large number of tourists from all over the
Philippines or the world. This was followed by the collection of data relevant to the investigation
before developing an analysis to create the objectives of the proposed study. Each step needs
references from readily available sources pertaining to the scheme's subject matter. In order to
provide reliable information, the data obtained will be carefully reviewed. The outcome will give
solutions and rationalizations for the proposal's design principles.

RELATED LITERATURE

1.1 BEACH RESORTS

Hotels, according to Medlik and Ingram, are businesses that provide services such as
lodging, food, and beverages to visitors or temporary residents who desire to remain at the hotel.
Because hotels are in the service industry, they should focus on enhancing service quality in
order to remain relevant and competitive in the business world. It is said that organizations that
focus on providing the finest service possible to their clients may keep and improve their
customers' loyalty and happiness. Smith added that, because to the increasing growth of tourism
in Southeast Asia, incoming individual hotel and beach resort developments were given special
consideration during the planning and design stages. Integrated resorts were first considered in
the 1970s. Beach resort research was mostly conducted on North American and British terrain,
with very modest studies concentrating on the Mediterranean and Middle East regions, where the
latter thrived even more than British resorts. The coastline has always drawn visitors, and it is
critical for a country to manage its beaches in a sustainable manner. Attractive sandy beaches, as
well as other natural elements associated with the coastline, have led to the global development
of beach resorts. Beach resorts are defined as the individual or multiple tourist lodgings that are
beach-fronted in terms of location, regardless of quality. According to Mahathir, the development
of beach resorts may lead to a country obtaining more foreign exchange through the rise of the
tourist business. This might also be motivated by a desire to enhance the conditions or well-being
of its population through increasing employment possibilities and income generation. According
to Pine and Philips, it is critical for an expanding hotel industry to have high-quality management
in order to provide high-quality services that contribute to customer satisfaction. As a result,
these resorts must maintain effective plans and performance management.

1.2 HOTEL AND TOURISM INDUSTRY IN THE PHILIPPINES

The Philippines, with its white-sand beaches and kind people, is a tourism-dependent
economy. Previously, tourism generated more than 10% of the country's gross domestic output.
However, due to international border closures and statewide lockdowns, the tourist sector's direct
gross value added has dropped by nearly half in the last two years. The relaxation of travel
restrictions and speedier vaccination distribution, as well as the relaxing of testing and quarantine
regulations, is expected to revitalize the Philippine tourist sector. In 2019, the travel and tourism
industry contributed 12.7% to the country's GDP. Good travel and tourism policies enable
millions of international visitors annually. Tourist arrivals to the Philippines slumped by 73%
during the seven months of 2020, giving the country 1.3 million visits, according to a Philippines
News Agency report. (Philippines Tourism and Hotel Industry Trends, Share, Growth | 2022 - 27,
n.d.)

Due to the rapid drop in tourist visits caused by the COVID-19 epidemic, the Philippines
lost around PHP 400 billion (nearly USD 8.3 billion) in tourism earnings in 2020. In the
Philippines, the government shuttered Luzon's airports on March 20 as part of the island's
Enhanced Community Quarantine (ECQ), which began on March 16. The tourist industry has
already suffered the pandemic's severe influence on its performance. Travel restrictions and
measures in other nations began as early as January of this year, affecting Philippine foreign
visitor arrivals. Domestic tourists, on the other hand, restricted their trip because they were afraid
of catching COVID-19. According to the Department of Tourism, foreign tourist receipts in the
first quarter of the year fell 36% to PHP 85 billion, compared to the same period last year.
(Philippines Tourism and Hotel Industry Trends, Share, Growth | 2022 - 27, n.d.)

The Philippine tourism sector accounted for around 4% of the entire economy and aimed
to double that figure by increasing infrastructure, accessibility, health and hygiene, and
expanding internet promotional marketing strategy, which would lead to chances in emerging
markets. In order to attract more foreign visitors, the government altered its visa-free access
policy in 2015. Famous tourist locations, such as the island groups of Luzon, Visayas, and
Mindanao, have already experienced a major flood of investment in recent years, particularly in
the top end of the market, resulting in surplus supply and encouraging the formation of the hotel
industry. (Philippines Tourism and Hotel Industry Trends, Share, Growth | 2022 - 27, n.d.)

1.3 TOURISM AND SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT

According to the World Tourism Organization, "sustainability principles refer to the

environmental, economic, and socio-cultural aspects of tourism development, and a suitable
balance must be established between these three dimensions to ensure its long-term
sustainability". This concept arose as a result of the United Nations Brundtland commission's
report Our Common Future. These include global warming, tropical forest protection, and the
preservation of natural habitats for endangered animals, as well as ocean pollution and ozone
layer depletion. Tourism is the migration of people away from their homes to visit other areas of
interest for pleasure, commerce, or adventure. Tourism is one of the world's largest and fastest-
growing industries. The industry is heavily reliant on environmental resources such as pristine
beaches, warm climates, clean air, and landscape formation, among others. However, insufficient
management of these resources may result in environmental inefficiency (Nezakati, 2016)

1.4 ENVIRONMENT

Tourism should contribute to long-term development. As a result, sustainable tourism

development must include attraction planning in such a way that tourists can enjoy themselves
while causing minimal impacts on the host environment and culture. Indeed, environmental
quality can be adversely affected due to natural resource exploitation, degradation of natural
resources and ecosystems, and the requirements and activities of the tourism industry. When
human activities have a negative influence on environmental quality, appropriate policies to
provide development possibilities and minimize their environmental repercussions are required.
(Nezakati, 2016)
As a result, establishing a high-quality environment would ensure the resource's
environmental sustainability and generate a favorable image. As a result, the attraction's
reputation must be maintained since it is part of everyday actions to establish a competitive
advantage, and it is the reason why people visit a location. Furthermore, changes in the
sustainability of the target destination can determine the positive and negative indicators of
sustainable tourism. (Nezakati, 2016)

1.5 ECO-RESORT

An eco-resort is one that has a low environmental effect. Eco-Resorts defines themselves as
"supporting the earth-one journey at a time." Regionally, we encourage modest, one-of-a-kind
East African camps and lodges that help their local communities and protect their local habitats.
Our Kenyan offices are totally self-sufficient on a local level. We produce our own electricity
and collect rainwater using a wind turbine and solar panels. Booking with Eco-resorts helps to
save East Africa's ecology and indigenous traditions" (Eco Resorts, 2017). An Eco-lodge is a
subset of an Eco-resort. Both are extremely similar, although the Eco-lodge is located in a more
remote region of the environment. This would be in Adirondack Park, which is heavily wooded.
Eco-lodges, on the other hand, rely more on the environment. They are also interested in nature
and animals, and they are able to teach visitors. According to one source, "the greatest Eco-
lodges also seek to ensure strong ties with the local community." They train and employ them at
fair pay, participate in community development programs, provide activities that assist tourists in
conserving and appreciating local cultures, and contribute to the local economy."

1.6 ECONOMY

Sustainable development can also be linked to economic factors that encourage sustainability,
such as increased regional development and the tracking of foreign exchange. Sustainable
concerns are lessened when the social advantages of tourism activities rise, such as the
community's attempts to protect its cultural treasures and rising numbers of foreigners.
(Nezakati, 2016)

Sustainable economic initiatives are metrics used to track the amount and quality of tourist
services such as lodging, dining, and ecotourism activities. It enables managers to assess tourist
happiness based on the performance of tourism employees. As a result, the outcome
demonstrates how to establish and sustain a diversified and high-quality tourist offer throughout
time. At the same time, it can boost the destination's desirability. Aside from that, the
effectiveness of economic sustainability can be linked to ensuring tourist satisfaction during their
visits or vacation. Tourist suppliers, for example, should prioritize education and training and
have excellent professional and working skills for educating tourists about the importance of
sustainable tourism. (Nezakati, 2016)
Economic sustainability is concerned with how to exploit and perform the tourist business in
order to reap economic benefits from tourism. However, economic sustainability should be
examined using specific indicators that each tourist activity may manage, and so the influence of
the degree of economic activity should be evaluated. For example, an economic information
system enables managers to assess tourist satisfaction and guarantee that economic sustainability
is always achieved in order to satisfy long-term visitor expectations. (Nezakati, 2016)

CONCLUSION

Designing a beach resort is not an easy task. There are several factors to be made. You
will need to commit money, time, and, of course, research. It is always crucial to understand how
your resort plans will compete with local, national, and worldwide resorts. You must make
intelligent judgments in order to protect the environment. You don't create a resort to generate
money; you build a resort to attract tourists and make your location recognized across the world.

Bay Island Hotel, Andaman Island Port Blair

Port Blair, with its deep-blue ocean port, is the principal town of the Andaman Islands,
which are located in the Bay of Bengal to the southwest of Rangoon. The islands are home to a
variety of tribes, many of which have had little interaction with the outside world. The Andamans
are a place of primal beauty, of whales and robber crabs, a throwback to Charles Darwin's tike
and journeys.

The site for the hotel slopes down to the sea from which
there is a prevailing breeze. In many parts of India, one
finds structures that are extraordinarily inventive in their
response to prevailing breezes and light. For instance, in the
one-thousand-year-old Pad-Ramanathapuram Palace, built
in the hot-humid climate of Southern India, the royal
pavilion floor is built as a stepped pyramid covered by a
tiled pitched roof. This configuration has two advantages: it
does not need any enclosing walls to keep out the sun and rain,
and from within the pavilion the line of vision is both
unobstructed and deflected downwards to the cool grass around
the building.

This notion influenced the architecture of

the Bay Island Hotel. The buildings are structured
around courtyards connected by covered
passageways and are made up of a variety
of areas that overlook the green countryside and
the sea. The public rooms are accessed by a
a succession of terraces cascading down the hill,
which are shaded from the heat and rain by
massive overhanging roofs, which are a key part
of the design. The roofs are made of padauk, a
native redwood. The guest rooms are organized
in clusters of twelve in an L-shape on two levels,
with each room having a view of the sea.

DESIGN PHILOSOPHY

“Great Design does not Rely Simply on Beauty But Provides Awareness to those who

Experience it.” – NAGAYAMA YUKO

Photo taken from: https://www.yukonagayama.co.jp/en-about/

Architecture acts as a guideline for change, helping you plan investments, development,
and system changes systematically. Architects should strive for simplicity in their designs so that
they may be understood by their target audiences. As a result, simplicity is simply another way to
achieve the outstanding design. Simplicity is a critical concept in architecture, and it already has
a substantial, if unspoken, effect on the topic. The functionality, however, is a more crucial part
of a building, it gives the best comfort to the people that use it.

If architects focus only on function, buildings may be cold, ugly, and uninteresting.
Beautiful, well-constructed buildings are a symbol of a civilized society and reflect well on the
business or reputation of the owner. On the other hand, if they focus only on making it look
beautiful, the building may be completely impractical. Therefore, blending these two ideas is
necessary to create the perfect piece of architecture.

DESIGN CONCEPT

According to the philosophy, the proponents will stick to the simplicity of the proposed
Beach Resort Complex, which would include Green Building aims and standards. Because of its
natural and simple appearance, it is intended to catch the attention of all visitors to the Beach
Resort. The style will only concentrate on four colors green colors will be observed in man-made
plantations, gray colors in concrete materials, tinted bright blue colors in windows, and brown
colors in the many kinds of wood that will be employed. The planned Beach Resort Complex's
architectural concept strives to give guests leisure, which is why the project includes the Green.
Building.
Green Building will be its focal point since the planned project's location will be
integrated with the environment. The design will establish basic building designs with huge
interiors from micro to macro.

FORM CONCEPT

The proposed Beach Resort Complex's form idea will focus on different shapes on
buildings with wood accents, but the structures will keep the notion of simplicity since it is the
key contributor to its concept. The concept's purpose is to allow guests to focus on the natural
creation and beauty of the island. The structures should blend seamlessly with the surroundings.
The purpose is for the guest to rest and unwind, thus the building should be basic enough so the
guest can always relate to the surroundings rather than the structures.
To avoid being unpleasant or ugly, the proposed Beach resort complex would use basic
shapes and forms such as circles and the materials will make use of wood concrete, and glass.
Because the property is on Calintaan Island. The Resort will be gigantic or colossal in scale, yet
it will be kept small in order to accommodate all of the necessary building locations. The color
design for the resort will be appealing, with the outside largely consisting of 2-3 colors.

STYLE GUIDING PRINCIPLE

Style Guiding Principles are important while designing a structure. It will act as a guide

for the proposed Beach Resort Hotel Complex. The proposed Beach Resort Hotel Complex will

incorporate the following design principles: contrast, balance, emphasis, repetition, proportion,

hierarchy, rhythm, pattern, white space, movement, variety, and unity to create a visually

appealing and functional design that users will understand.

The concept of sustainability and environment acts as a practice for future design to be

more efficient and harmless to the environment, as well as to provide convenience throughout

project development. Persons with disabilities will also be given special consideration for a more

welcoming environment that serves them as equally accommodated and gives them a sense of

equality that characterizes their visit to the project. Another goal is to make the most of their time

and leave a lasting impression throughout their visit. The design must include natural ventilation

and passive cooling to save energy costs.

FUNCTIONAL CONCEPT

The relevance of the functions will determine how buildings and structures are arranged.
The major goals of the proposed Beach Resort Complex were to amaze guests with the right
placement of the structures. The major building of the proposed resort will be the hotel, which
will also house the lobby. Other recreational structures will be positioned far away from the
cottages and villas to avoid disturbing the relaxed guests. Other minor structures will be erected
in accordance with their space adjacencies.

ECONOMY CONCEPT

Economically, the planned project will be sustainable due to the incorporation of Green
Building; by additionally installing sustainable elements such as solar panels, the establishment's
overall energy consumption would be reduced. Water tanks, deep wells, and rainwater collecting
systems will be installed in important and minor structures, such as hotels and nearby cottages, to
ensure water supply while also conserving water.

TIME CONCEPT

The intended project will be developed using modern construction techniques. Modern

construction methods use cutting-edge new building procedures and materials with the purpose

of reducing construction time, energy consumption, and prices. Prefabricated materials will be

used if components of the project were constructed in a manufacturing setting before being

brought to the site. To minimize delays in the building schedule, materials that are safe and

convenient to export must be examined before shipping.

Wood, concrete, and glass will be employed in the structural and architectural materials.

This will provide a more natural and realistic appearance. Metal will also be utilized to make the

structure more solid; however, this will not be visible from the outside because, as we all know,
metals may rust when exposed to sea breezes for an extended period of time. To keep things

simple, concrete, wood, and glass will be used. The materials specified will have a long lifespan.

ENVIRONMENTAL CONCEPT

Environmental sustainability is described as the proper management of the

environment to avoid depletion and degradation of natural resources and to ensure long-term

environmental quality. Environmental sustainability is how we ensure that the needs of today's

population are met without compromising the ability of future generations to support themselves.

Except, sustainability in architecture is more than just reducing energy consumption and waste.

Since it reflects the basic essential combination of relevant aspects of our life on this planet

cannot be grouped into subcategories, such as sustainable buildings reducing waste and energy

consumption not only in neighborhoods but also in entire cities.

The proposed project's design will be ecologically friendly, taking into account passive

cooling and making use of natural light and ventilation to reduce energy costs and environmental

effects. The project will employ green architecture and will undoubtedly use plants to

complement the design as well as to improve the community's environment.

ARCHITECTURAL PROGRAMMING

The proposed Beach Resort Hotel Complex's spatial programming is determined by the
Architectural Programming. This section of the study will establish the number of spaces
required. A thorough comprehension of the places that might be useful to the research is
required.
