LPWeek 3 Combination 2 Final

The document is a sample daily lesson log from a Grade 10 mathematics class. The lesson is on combinations, with the objectives being able to illustrate combinations of objects and apply the concept of combination in real-life scenarios. The teacher reviews permutations from the previous lesson. Examples are provided to determine if situations illustrate combinations, along with the steps and formula to solve combination problems. Students complete an activity in groups to analyze and answer combination word problems, and are assessed on completion of tasks and accuracy of solutions.

Formula: nCr = ( n−r ) ! r !

The teacher solves the problems from activity 1 as examples:

(Visualizes the problem using PPT)

1) Selecting 3 members out of a group of 10 to represent their group.

Solution:
Given: n=10, r=3
n!
Formula: nCr = ( n−r ) ! r !
10 ! 10 10∙ 9 ∙ 8 ∙7 ! 10∙ 9 ∙ 8
nCr = ( 10−3 ) ! 3 ! = 7 ! 3! = 7!3! = 3! = 10∙ 4 ∙ 3 = 120
Therefore, there are 240 ways to select members from a group.
2) Choosing 2 out of 6 movies to watch today.
Solution:
Given: n=6 , r=2
n!
Formula: nCr = ( n−r ) ! r !
6! 6! 6! 6 ∙5 ∙ 4 !
nCr = ( 6−2 ) ! 2 ! = ( 6−2 ) ! 2 ! = 4 ! 2 ! = 4 ! 2! = 5∙ 3 = 15
Therefore, there are 15 ways to choose a movie.

3) Pairing an outfit. Assume that there are 4 slacks and 6 tuxedos.

Solution.
Given: n=4, r=1 and n=6,r=1
n! n!
Formula: nCr x nCr = ( n−r ) ! r ! x ( n−r ) ! r !

4! 6!
= x
( 4−1 ) ! 1! ( 6−1 ) ! 1 !

4! 6!
= x
3! 1 ! 5! 1 !

4∙3! 6∙5!
= x
3! 1 ! 5! 1 !

=4x6

= 24
Therefore, there are 24 ways to pair an outfit.

4) Player can choose 3 items out of a collection of 7 different items.

Solution:
Given: n=7, r=3
n! 7! 7! 7 ∙ 6 ∙ 5∙ 4 !
Formula: nCr = ( n−r ) ! r ! = ( 7−3 ) ! 3 ! = 4 ! 3! = 4 ! 3 ! =7 ∙ 5=35
Therefore, there are 70 ways to choose an item.

5) Anna have 8 photos, but she can only afford to print 4 photos.
Solution.
Given: n=8, r=4
n! 8! 8! 8 ∙ 7∙ 6 ∙ 5 ∙ 4 !
Formula: nCr = ( n−r ) ! r ! = ( 8−4 ) ! 4 ! = 4 ! 4 ! = 4!4 ! = 7 ∙ 5∙ 2 = 70
Therefore, Anna has 420 ways to choose pics to be print.
