Reading Comprehension
There are many different approaches to making government policies. There is some debate over which method is the most
effective. Of all the world’s political systems, democracy is the most common—most countries around the world practice
some variant of democracy. In a democracy, decisions are made by “the majority,” which means “the greater number.” This is
a political arrangement where all people over a certain age vote to decide whether or not they want a certain leader in charge.
People usually choose to vote for a leader who has personal beliefs that are close to their own. Potential leaders have to
persuade people to vote for them by debating their opponents on important topics, like how to use and take care of the
environment. How these people feel about social policies is important, because they will be making decisions for the majority
later on. There are many different social policies to consider, such as education, employment, and health policies.
Once a leader is voted in, they help implement laws by introducing bills to be voted on. Once the leaders have voted to let a
law through, the country’s head of government, for example the president or the prime minister, must sign the bill into law.
About half the countries in the world use this system.
Democracy is just one type of political system; there are several others, such as monarchies, communism, and dictatorships.
