Pressure Relief Application Example

This document provides steps to simulate an emergency scenario in HYSYS Dynamics where the vapor outlet of a system becomes blocked. It instructs the user to add PID controllers to control feed flow, vessel level, and vessel pressure. Strip charts are created to monitor key process variables as the pressure controller is manually overridden to simulate the blocked outlet. Observing the strip charts shows the impact on the system from this simulated emergency scenario.

Background:

This example will showcase how to run an emergency scenario through HYSYS Dynamics. In
this example, we will simulate the event of a blocked vapor outlet and observe the behavior of
the relief device. Through this example you will learn how to create a control scheme, build a
strip chart, and run an emergency scenario.

Steps:
1. Open case Safety Workshop – Starter.hsc

2. Ensure your case is operating in Dynamic Mode by navigating to the Dynamics tab of
the ribbon.

3. Open the model palette by clicking F4 or by navigating to the Flowsheet/Modify tab of

the ribbon and clicking on Models and Streams.
4. Click on the Dynamics section of the palette form. Add a PID Controller unit operation
to the flowsheet.

5. Configure the PID Controller operation with the following specifications.

Feed Flow Controller

Connections Tab
Name Feed-FC
Process Variable Source D1010_In – Mass Flow
Output Target Object VLV-100 – Actuator Desired Position
Parameters Tab
Action Reverse
PV Minimum 262000 lb/hr
PV Maximum 352000 lb/hr
Mode Auto
Kc 0.1
Ti 0.2 minutes
SP 295600 lb/hr

After you have entered the above specifications, create a Face Plate for this controller by
clicking the button labeled Face Plate… at the bottom of the form.
6. We will now add two more PID Controllers using the same method described above.
Please refer to the tables below for configuring these unit operations.

Level Controller
Connections Tab
Name D1010-LC
Process Variable Source D-1010 – Liquid Percent Level
Output Target Object VLV-2 – Actuator Desired Position
Parameters Tab
Action Direct
PV Minimum 0.0%
PV Maximum 100.0%
Mode Auto
Kc 2.0
Ti 10.0
SP 30.0%

Pressure Controller
Connections Tab
Name D1010-PC
Process Variable Source D-1010 – Vessel Pressure
Output Target Object VLV-1 – Actuator Desired Position
Parameters Tab
Action Direct
PV Minimum 200 psig
PV Maximum 300 psig
Mode Auto
Kc 2.0
Ti 2.0
SP 270 psig

After configuring these controllers, create a faceplate for these just as you had done previously
for the other controller.
7. The next step after creating controllers is to create strip charts so we can observe process
variables as the simulation progresses. Navigate to the Dynamics tab of the ribbon and
click on the Strip Charts button under the Tools group of the ribbon.

8. Click the Add button on the form that appears to create a new strip chart. Refer to the
table below to configure this new strip chart. In order to add variables click on the Edit
button and then click Add on the subsequent form.

Strip Chart Settings

Setup
Strip Chart Name Process Variables
Logger Size 5000
Sample Interval 5 seconds
Variables
D-1010 Vessel Pressure
D-1010 Liquid Percent Level

RV-100 Mass Flow

D1010_In Mass Flow

9. After you have finished configuring the strip chart, click on the Display button or
Double-click on the Strip Chart Name to display the graph.

10. To observe the effect a closed outlet has on your system, set the controller labeled
D1010-PC to manual mode through the drop down on the faceplate.
11. You now have controller over the operating point of the controller (Actuator Desired
Position). Click on the OP box and set it to 0%.

12. Observe the result on the strip chart you created earlier. If you are unable to see the
curves due to the current zoom status of the strip chart, right click on it and select
AutoScale All Axes.
