Rearrange these three sets into order according

to their dispersion. The set with the smallest
dispersion should be at the top.

Chapter 6: Representing Data – Statistics for
Univariate (Page 305 - 309)

Date: 06/02/2024
Learning Objectives

At the end of this lesson, you should be

able to;
• To find the variance of a data set

• To calculate standard deviation of a data

set
Real Life Application
● Market research and consumer behaviour analysis use
statistical methods to interpret and analyse data, make
predictions and guide business decisions.
● Financial analysts use statistics to model and forecast
stock prices, assess risk and make investment decisions.
● In economics, statistics are utilized to measure economic
indicators, such as inflation rates, unemployment rates
and gross domestic product (GDP).
● Healthcare providers use statistics to analyze patient
data, assess the effectiveness of medical procedures and
study the impact of public health programs. Etc.
Key Vocabularies
• Data
• Discrete data
• Continuous data
• Variance
• Standard deviation
Variance and
Standard deviation
VARIANCE
• Variance is the average squared deviation
from the mean of a set of data.
• It is used to find the standard deviation.
How to find the Variance
• Find the mean of the data.
• Subtract the mean from each value of the data.
The result is called the deviation from the
mean.
• Square each deviation of the mean.
• Find the sum of the squares.
• Divide the total by the number of items
STANDARD DEVIATION
• Standard deviation shows the variation in data.
• If the data is close together, the standard
deviation will be small.
• If the data is spread out, the standard deviation
will be large.
STANDARD DEVIATION FORMULA
The standard deviation formula can be
represented using sigma notation:

The standard deviation formula is the square root

of the variance.
Discussion Activity
The math test scores of five students are: 92, 88,
80, 68 and 52.
