Direct Variation

1) The document outlines an upcoming mathematics lesson for Grade 9 on inverse variation. 2) It provides an example situation of employees renting a house together, with the rent decreasing as more employees share. 3) The lesson will explain that inverse variation is a relationship where as one quantity (x) increases, the other (y) decreases, following the formula y=k/x, where k is the constant of variation.

Direct Variation – when two quantities Before anything else, let us have a quick recap about what

Previously, we studied DIRECT VARIATION.

POP UP IMAGES:
We learned that it is a relationship between two quantities that
increases or decreases at the same time.
(ALL PICTURES WILL APPEAR)
Take a look at these pictures. Among the three, two pictures
show Direct Variation and the other is not. I will give you 10
seconds to think. Timer starts now.

Did you find already the two pictures that show Direct Variation?
Good job!
(THE CLOCK RUNS FOR 10 SECONDS)

(INSERT THE PICTURE BELOW)

Let’s find out if you are right. Let’s have the first picture. The
graph shows the distance travelled and the number of hours
used. As the distance increases, the time also increases. Thus,
this shows Direct Variation. You got it right!

(INSERT THE PICTURE BELOW)

Let’s have the second picture. The picture shows a woman buying
kilos of rice. As she spends more money for the rice, the more
rice she can buy. Thus, this also shows Direct Variation. You got
it again!

(INSERT THE PICTURE BELOW)

And for the last picture, it shows a table of values with number of
employees and the corresponding rent. As the number of employees
increases, the amount of rent decreases. This shows not a Direct
Variation. You are right! Good work grade 9!

If the table does not show a Direct Variation, what do you think does
this table show?

LECTURE

INVERSE VARIATION This real life situation is related on our lesson for today which is all
about INVERSE VARIATION.
Inverse Variation is a relationship between two quantities, x and y,
that states that y varies inversely as x or y is inversely proportional
INVERSE VARIATION – it is a relationship

y= =2
6 Take a look on our table. As you observe, if we multiply the value of
x to the value of y, the answer is always 12 which is our Constant of
Constant of Variation Variation(k).
k =xy
In Inverse Variation, we can also solve the Constant of Variation by
using the formula: k =xy .

We can also observe that as the value of x increases, the value of y

decreases. On the other hand, as the value of x decreases, the
value of y increases. And that is the relationship between two
quantities in Inverse Variation.

inverse variation or not.
For us to determine if the given table of values expresses an inverse
variation, we must check first the relationship of the two variables. If
x 2 4 8
the first variable increases, the second variable must be decreases.
y 8 4 2
But if the first variable decreases, the second variable must be
increases. Second, the constant of variation must be the same.
1. Check the relationship of the two
variables.
2. The constant of variation must be the
same.

(Nos 1 & 2 sentences will disappear) Let us have this table again. What did you observe between the
values of x and y? Correct! As the values of x increases, the values
x 2 4 8 of y decreases.
y 8 4 2
Now, let us check if the constant of variation are the same. Let us
(each values of x and y will be encircled one by one and use the variable k as constant of variation. We already know that to
number 16 will appear below each column) solve for k, we have to multiply x and y. So, we have 2 times 8 is
k = xy k = 16 equal to 16, 4 times 4 is equal to 16, and 8 times 2 is also equal to
16. Therefore the constant of variation is 16 and this table shows an
inverse variation.

Let us have another example. Let us determine if this table

equal to x times y. So, we have 1 times 9 is equal to 9,3 times 3 is

determine if the given table expresses an inverse variation or not.
1.
x 3 5 6 Time’s up! Let’s see if you got the correct answer.
y 10 6 5

POP UP TEXT: The correct answer is Yes! Since as the value of x increases, the
Inverse Variation value of y decreases. Also, the constant of variation are all the same.
Therefore the table expresses an inverse variation!
2. Let’s have number 2.
X 2 5 9
Y 7 4 2 Time’s up! Let’s see if you got the correct answer.

POP UP TEXT: The correct answer is Not! Though it satisfies the first condition
Not an Inverse Variation that states as the value of x increases, the value of y decreases,
the constant of variation are not the same.
