b. Why would this be a consideration in product or service design?
c. Name three ways that each of these products has found new uses: baking soda, duct
tape, and vinegar.
10. Why is R&D a key factor in productivity improvement? Name some ways R&D
contributes to productivity improvements.
11. What is mass customization?
12. Name two factors that could make service design much different than product design.
13. Explain the term robust design.
14. Explain what quality function deployment is and how it can be useful.

19. a. Select an electronic device you are familiar with. What standard feature does it have
that was once a “wow” feature? What “wow” feature does it have that you think will
soon be a standard feature on new versions?
b. Answer part a for a service you are familiar with.
20.

Part II: Conceptual Design

Conceptual Design, Design evaluation
a) Given below is the sketch of a typical chair used in many classrooms in HKUST. Due to the
position of the writing pad, different chairs must be used by right-handed or left-handed users.
Two alternate designs are proposed in which the same chair can be used by either right- or left
handed users.
Compare the two new designs against the HKUST design.
b) Based on your answers, which is the best design?
c) Write for each SWOT analysis of the better design among the two new ones.

Part Three: Case Study: Robust Design Implementation in a Product Life

Cycle
1. Introduction:
Company XYZ is a leading manufacturer of consumer electronics, known for its innovative
products. The company recently launched a new smartphone model, the XYZ-500, which
incorporates advanced features and cutting-edge technology. To ensure the success of the
product in the market, the company implemented a robust design approach throughout the
product life cycle.

2. Product Life Cycle:

The XYZ-500 smartphone went through various stages in its product life cycle, including
product development, introduction, growth, maturity, and decline. At each stage, the company
focused on incorporating robust design principles to enhance the product's performance,
reliability, and customer satisfaction.

3. Robust Design Implementation:

During the product development stage, the design team conducted thorough research to identify
potential risks and challenges. They analyzed customer feedback, market trends, and
technological advancements to determine the key features and functionalities that would
differentiate the XYZ-500 from its competitors.

The team then used quality function deployment (QFD) techniques to translate customer
requirements into design specifications. They conducted extensive simulations and tests to
evaluate the product's performance under various conditions, identifying potential weaknesses
and areas for improvement.

In the introduction stage, the company focused on effective production planning to ensure a
smooth market launch. They collaborated closely with suppliers and manufacturing partners to
establish robust supply chains and efficient production processes. By implementing lean
manufacturing principles, the company minimized waste and optimized resource utilization.

As the XYZ-500 entered the growth stage, the company continuously monitored customer
feedback and market trends. They proactively addressed any quality issues or performance
concerns, incorporating customer insights into the product's design and manufacturing processes.
This iterative approach allowed them to enhance the product's robustness and adapt to evolving
customer needs.

In the maturity stage, the company focused on sustaining product quality and reliability. They
implemented comprehensive quality control measures, including rigorous testing protocols and
supplier audits. By closely monitoring key performance indicators and customer satisfaction
metrics, they ensured that the product consistently met or exceeded customer expectations.

4. Case Study Questions:

a) Why did Company XYZ choose to implement a robust design approach in the
development and production of the XYZ-500 smartphone?
b) How did the company incorporate customer feedback and market trends in the design and
manufacturing processes?
c) What strategies did Company XYZ employ to ensure effective production planning and
supply chain management during the introduction stage?
d) How did the company address quality issues and performance concerns during the growth
stage of the product life cycle?
e) What measures did Company XYZ take to sustain product quality and reliability during
the maturity stage?
