Lesson Plan Polygons

This document outlines a mathematics lesson plan for 7th grade students on polygons. The lesson plan defines polygons, identifies different types of polygons such as convex and concave, and discusses the parts of a polygon including sides, vertices, and angles. Students participate in activities to identify polygons, determine if they are convex or concave, and complete practice problems applying the concepts learned. The lesson aims to help students understand key concepts about polygons.

SCHOOL : Dapitan City National High School GRADE LEVEL :7

TEACHER : Mr. Ivan I. Molina LEARNING AREA : Mathematics
DATE & TIME : QUARTER : 3rd

I. OBJECTIVES

A. Content Standards
Demonstrate understanding of key concepts of geometry of shapes and
sizes, and geometric relationships.

B. Performance Standards
The learner can create models of plane figures and formulate and solve
accurately authentic problems involving sides and angles of a polygon.

C. Learning Competency
Illustrate polygons; (a) convexity; (b) angles; (c) sides.
(M7GE-IIIe-2)

D. Specific Objectives
At the end of the lesson the students will be able to:
1. define, identify and illustrate different kinds of a polygons according to the number of
sides;
2. differentiate convex from non-convex (concave) polygons: and
3. identify the parts of a polygon.

II. CONTENT Polygon

III. LEARNING RESOURCES
A. References
1. Teacher’s Guide Pages : None
2. Learner’s Materials Pages : Mathematics Quarter 3
3. Additional Materials: paper, pen

IV. PROCEDURES
TEACHER’S ACTIVITY STUDENTS’ ACTIVITY
A. Preliminary Activities

1. Prayer
May I request everyone to please In the name of the Father, of the Son, and of the
stand for the prayer? Holy Spirit, Amen…

Please be seated.

2. Greetings
Good morning class! Good Morning Sir!
How are you this morning? We are very much fine, Sir!

3. Checking of attendance
Are there any absent today? None Sir.
Very good!
Are you excited for our new lesson for
today? Yes we are, Sir!
Wow, good to hear that.

4. Setting of Rules
Before we finally move on to our
lesson, let us first have an agreement. Is
that fine with you all? Yes, sir!

I want you to keep all things that are

not needed to our discussion. Sit properly
and do not talk with your seatmates.

What will you do if you want to

answer to my questions?
We’ll just raise our hands silently,
sir.
Very good!

And what will you do if

somebody is talking here in front? We should listen attentively, sir.
Bravo!

What about if we have group activities? We have to cooperate and participate, sir.

So, do we have an agreement now? Yes, sir!

B. Review
Before we proceed to our new lesson
for today, let us have a short recap about
our lesson last week.

Do you still remember what was our About Angles formed when two lines are cut by
lesson last week? a transversal, and about angles sir.

Very Good!

Okay, what is transversal? A line that cuts across two or more lines.
Very good! There are 4 angles in each line sir.
How many angles when each line cut
by the transversal line?

Interior angles, Exterior angles, Corresponding

What are those kinds of angles we angle, Alternate Exterior angles and Alternate
discussed? Interior angles.

Very good!
None sir.
Do you have any questions about our
last topic?

Alright!

C. Motivation
Okay class, now I have here a set of
pictures or figures here. All you want to do
is to determine what part of basic
geometry terms you can see in the picture
and give me undefined terms as you can
see in the picture.

(Students answers vary)

So now, what do you think is our
lesson for today?

D. Presentation
This morning we are going to discuss
about polygons in which you are
expected to: define, identify and
illustrate different kinds of a polygons
according to the number of sides;
differentiate convex to non-convex
(concave) polygons and identify the parts
of a polygon.

E. Discussion

Polygons
- A closed figure formed by
three or more segments
called sides.
- Each side intersects exactly
two other sides, once at each
endpoint.
- No two sides with a common
endpoint are collinear.
- Each line segment is called
the side of the polygons.
- Each endpoint where the
sides meet is called the vertex
of the polygon.

There 2 types of Polygons

1.Convex
- A polygon is convex if no line that
contains a side of the polygon contains a
point in the interior of the polygon.

Example:

- A polygon is convex if no diagonal is in

the exterior of the polygon.

Example:
How do we determine if our Polygon is a
regular Polygon?

Equilateral
- A polygon is equilateral if all
sides have equal length.

Equiangular
- A polygon is equiangular if all
the angles have equal
measure.

Regular Polygon
- Is both equilateral and
equiangular.

F. Developing Mastery

Now class, I will call a random student to

identify if it is a Polygon or Not a Polygon.

1.
1.Not a Polygon

2.
2.Polygon

3.
3.Polygon
4. 4.Not a Polygon

5. 5.Polygon

Do you have any questions or

clarification?
None sir.
Okay, good.

G. Application

Now, get 1/4 sheet of paper and you

have to answer the following.
Understood?

Okay, good. Yes sir.

Test A.
Direction: Write P if the figure is a
polygon and write NP if it is not a
Polygon.

1.
1.NP

2.

2.P

3.

3.P
4.

4.NP
5.

5.P
Test B
Direction: State whether it is convex or
concave polygon.

1.

1.Concave

2.
2.Convex

3.
3.Convex

4.
4.Concave

5.
5.Concave

Are you done?

Okay, past your paper. Yes sir.

H. Generalization

A while ago, we discussed about

Polygons.
Now, what is Polygons ?
A closed figure formed by three or more
segments called sides.
Can you give me an example of polygons?
(Students answer vary)
What are the parts of the polygons?
The parts of the polygon are side, vertex and
angle.
Okay, very good!

What is a convex polygon?

A polygon is convex if no line that contains a
side of the polygon contains a point in the
interior of the polygon.
Okay, very good!

Do you have any questions?

None sir.
Okay good.

I. Evaluation

Now, I want you to get a 1 whole sheet

of paper. You have to answer it individual.

Direction: Complete the table below. Use

the given figure.

Vertices: S, I, L, E, N, and T
Angles: ∠S, ∠I, ∠L, ∠E, ∠N, ∠T
Sides: SI , IL, ¿, EN , NT , TS ,
Consecutive Vertices: S, I, L, E, N, and T
Consecutive Angles: ∠S, ∠I, ∠L, ∠E, ∠N, ∠T
Consecutive Sides: SI , IL, ¿, EN , NT , TS ,
Diagonals of S: SL, SE, SN ,

J. Assignment

Study relationship of exterior and interior

angles of a convex polygon.
