Unit 3: THE IMPACT OF WILDERNESS TOURISM
1. The reading related to tourism in wild-place
The market for tourism in remote areas is booming as never before. Countries a
ll across the world are actively promoting their 'wilderness' regions - such as mou
ntains, Arctic lands, deserts, small islands and wetlands - to high-spending tourist
s. The attraction of these areas is obvious: by definition, wilderness tourism requi
res little or no initial investment. But that does not mean that there is no cost.
As the 1992 United Nations Conference on Environment and Development rec
ognized, these regions are fragile (i.e. highly vulnerable to abnormal pressures) n
ot just in terms of their ecology, but also in terms of the culture of their inhabitan
ts. The three most significant types of fragile environment in these respects, and
also in terms of the proportion of the Earth's surface they cover, are deserts, mou
ntains and Arctic areas. An important characteristic is their marked seasonality,
with harsh conditions prevailing for many months each year.
Consequently, most human activities, including tourism, are limited to quite cle
arly defined parts of the year. Tourists are drawn to these regions by their natural
landscape beauty and the unique cultures of their indigenous people. And poor g
overnments in these isolated areas have welcomed the new breed of 'adventure to
urist', grateful for the hard currency they bring. For several years now, tourism ha
s been the prime source of foreign exchange in Nepal and Bhutan.
Tourism is also a key element in the economies of Arctic zones such as Laplan
d and Alaska and in desert areas such as Ayers Rock in Australia and Arizona's
Monument Valley.
Tourism is only temporarily delayed when unexpected factors happen that are no
t predicted. But it is a long-term human’s need.
True or False or answer the questions according to the reading above
1. 1.1. Wilderness tourism requires little or no initial investment as well as others
2. “these regions” in the reading stand for what?
3. 1.2. What are three most significant types of fragile environment in the reading t
alks about?
4. 1.3. What is the most important characteristic of these areas?
5. 1.4. What elements make tourism be delayed?
2. Read The text and choose the correct option.
An environmental project
I am going to tell you about a school project that we did recently. We wanted to find o
ut what kind of packaging people prefer when they buy something and whether they re
cycle different materials. We wondered what percentage of people take the time to org
anize their rubbish correctly in the different bins at home each week.
As part of the project, we spent a Saturday morning in three different local supermarke
ts asking people about the household items they buy, the kind of packaging they prefer
and whether they use different bins for different materials. This is what we found.
Nearly everyone said that they have less money to spend now than they had this time l
ast year. About two thirds of shoppers also said that it now costs more to do their week
ly shop than before. People now shop in several supermarkets each week rather than o
ne, because it’s hard to find just one supermarket where all the products are cheaper th
an the other supermarkets.
All the people interviewed said they have three bins at home for separating their waste
products, but around 20% of people said that they don’t separate the materials properl
y. About 70% said they prefer to buy glass bottles and jars because it is better for the e
nvironment and cheaper than plastic containers, but less than half of those people said
they actually recycle the glass things they buy. Only about 10% of people, said they ne
ver recycle anything, and luckily, not one person said they don’t care about the enviro
nment.
