Chain of Command

● Enforcement
a. Not following the chain of command results in your question not being
answered.
b. You will receive some sort of punishment for breaking the chain of command
(typically by a Commanding Officer if in a regiment or the Army Sergeant
Major if not in a regiment).

● Definition of the Chain of Command

a. The chain of command is the line of authority and responsibility along which
orders are passed within a military unit and between different units. If you
have a question or concern, you should talk to the lowest high rank that you
can contact.
i) For example, if you were any rank between Recruit (OR-1) -
Captain (OF-2) you would contact a Major (OF-3).
b. If you are a high rank and have a question or concern, you should direct
yourself to the rank directly above you.
ii) For example, a Major (OF-3) would go to a Lieutenant Colonel
(OF-4). If the person you have contacted cannot answer your
question, they will direct it to the rank above them and so on
until an answer is found and is sent back to you.
iii) In terms of the Army Sergeant Major, his rank is equivalent to
that of the Deputy Chief of General Staff.
c. This system is put in place so that valuable time is not wasted, and tasks can
be done by people who are better suited to solve them.

● Importance of the Chain of Command

a. It is extremely important to respect and follow the chain of command, as it
will help deliver important messages, concerns or issues through the
appropriate people so it can be dealt with.
b. It helps with organization and effective problem solving, so that everyone can
be assisted as efficiently as possible.
