Chapter 1

THE PROBLEM AND ITS SCOPE

Rationale

Making a choice about a career is challenging. A career is a long-term work

an individual has chosen based on one’s passions and goals; therefore, it leaves
a lasting effect. Every student, at a certain juncture in life, has to make a choice
regarding a career. It is incumbent that students make the one’s correct choice,
asserts Oladele (as cited in Nyarko-Sampson, 2013). However, making the right
career choice is a challenging task due to the numerous factors that influence a
student. Career choice has an impact on a student's career path. A career path is
the process of making decisions about the type of work an individual would like
that helps anticipate and determine an individual's future level of income and the
type of work one will do, and as a result, it leaves an imprint on one's personality,
demeanor, and attitude. However, if an individual is unable to fit into the career
one has chosen and, therefore, is unable to attain the goals one has set for
themselves, one tends to be less productive and efficient. Consequently, making
a wrong decision can change someone's destiny.

The senior high school curriculum is being implemented to further establish

the education system of the Philippines. According to Manaspal (2018), the
Philippines' national development is significantly impacted by senior high school
education. In order to make students more competitive on the global stage, the
government made investments in education. Therefore, it is imperative for
students to make use of the tools and resources that are provided by educational
institutions to help students to decide on what career path to take in order to
become globally competitive. This is why the senior high school curriculum was
implemented—to help students develop the necessary skills, knowledge, and
2

values that will enable undergraduates to become competitive and successful on

the global stage.

In accordance with the age of the Grade 11 students, who are still in the
process of choosing college courses and mapping out the path of one’s future
careers, it is important for a student to carefully consider what to do with life.
According to Manaspal (2018), adolescents in the Philippines, compared to
Western civilization (where the K-12 system is patterned), cannot make their own
decisions at all times, especially when choosing a career. With this, students
tend to be reliant on the guidance of parents, teachers, classmates, peers, and
influencers. This causes confusion for the students in choosing one’s career and
contributes to the growing population of students entering college without a clear
idea of what to pursue.

This study aims to determine what are the factors that influence the career
decision-making of the Grade 11 students in St. Alphonsus Catholic School, Inc.
Furthermore, the purpose of this research is to identify the various factors that
influence career choices and are essential in assisting them in terms of
expressing one’s passion, broadening one’s horizons, and intellectual growth.

Theoretical Background (spacing?)

The theoretical underpinning of this study is based on the theories about

the factors influencing career choice among grade 11 students. The theories are

the Career Construction Theory (Savickas, 2013), Self-Determination Theory

(Ryan & Deci, 2017), Ratio-Difference Theory of Choice (Mahmoudi, 2022).

These theories support the idea of the factors influencing career choice among

grade 11 students and specifically delve into what the factors are and what
3

strategies should be used by the grade 11 students. (insert possible

recommendation for the study).

A General Theory of Addictions

A general theory of addictions (Jacobs D.F., 2015) (insert short

definition of the theory). (Explain why and how the theory supports your study.)

Career Construction Theory

The Career Construction Theory (Savickas, 2013) explains the interpretive

and interpersonal processes by which individuals organize their behavioral
dispositions, impose direction on their vocational behavior, and make meaning of
their vocational development.

Self-Determination Theory

The Self-Determination Theory (Ryan & Deci, 2017) is a motivational

theory that posits that people have basic psychological needs for autonomy,
relatedness, and competence. This theory states that the fulfillment of
psychological needs is essential for people’s psychological health and growth,
autonomous motivation, optimal functioning, and self-actualization. The need for
relatedness is the individual’s aspiration to maintain close, safe, and satisfying
connections in their social environment and feel part of it. It is emphasized that
autonomy is the need for self-determination, meaning, and freedom of choice.
This is the individual’s striving to realize and to actively and exploratively form
authentic and direction-giving values, goals, interests, and abilities, i.e., to
construct their identity.

Ratio-Difference Theory of Choice

The Ratio-Difference Theory of Choice (Mahmoudi, 2022) explained why,

in general, people choose merely adequate actions. When making decisions,
they should only use absolute differences, not ratios. This theory aims to more
precisely depict how a decision-maker who is boundedly rational might
operationally determine one alternative is preferable to another.

Statement of the Problem

This study investigates the Factors Influencing Career Choice Among Grade 11

students.

Specifically, it delves into:

1. What are the factors influencing career choice among students in the
11th grade?

2. What strategies should be used by the Grade 11 students based on

the study’s findings to effectively decide on a career choice?

Chapter 2

RESEARCH METHODOLOGY

The researchers made use of the descriptive approach in quantitative

research using structured questions to determine the Factors Influencing Career

Choice Among Grade 11 Students. In quantitative research it is the process of

collecting and analyzing numerical data. It can be used to find patterns and

averages, make predictions, test causal relationships, and generalize results to

wider populations. is the process of collecting and analyzing numerical data. The

research gives an interpretation referring to the theories: Career Construction

Theory (Savickas, 2013), Self-Determination Theory (Ryan & Deci, 2017), Ratio-

Difference Theory of Choice (Mahmoudi, 2022)

Research Environment

This research is conducted in St. Alphonsus Catholic School, G.Y. Dela

Serna St, Poblacion, Lapu – Lapu City, 6015 Cebu. Particularly, this study is set

to be carried out in the Research Class of Ms. Mari Auralyn Y. Aguihon in the

Grade 10 – Initiative classroom.

Research Respondents

The researchers will use “Stratified Random Sampling” as the sampling

method to gather respondents to participate in the survey. The respondents are

the Grade 11 students of St. Alphonsus catholic School, from Grade 11 –

Serenity, the respondents are thirty-one (31) in sum; from Grade 11 - Solidarity,

respondents are thirty-two (32) in sum; from Grade 11 - Solitude, respondents

are thirty-two (32) in sum; lastly, from Grade 11 – Stewardship, respondents are

thirty-one (31) in sum. They are in their senior year of secondary education, with

ages ranging from 16-18.

Research Instruments

In order to attain the investigation, the questionnaire was the selected

research instrument. These were distributed to the Grade 11 students. The

instructions constructed lead the respondents to answer the survey questionnaire

properly. The survey was easy to complete, easy to understand, and had been
6

written to give the students a stimulus to accurately answer the question and

target the study’s desired results.

Research Procedure

Gathering of Data. A transmittal was addressed to the principal of St.

Alphonsus Catholic School, Sr. Marjorie G. Genada, FDNSC, to conduct the

study in a research class of the researcher. After receiving approval, the

researchers then started researching the possible factors affecting career choice

through the internet and created a pre-survey confirming the possible factors.

Next, the researchers eliminated the factors with the lesser votes. Finally, the

researchers distributed the questionnaires with the Likert Scale Type of survey

to the 11th Grade students during the week of march 6, 2023 to investigate the

factors influencing one’s career choice. The surveys were then proceeded.

Treatment of Data. The researchers analyzed the results of the

questionnaires of the respondents, where the data gathered was interpreted to

determine the factors that influences the career choice among the grade 11

students.

To aid the interpretation of data, the following formulas were used:
