Tech II Semester Supplementary Examinations March 2010 POWER SYSTEM RELIABILITY (ELECTRICAL POWER SYSTEMS) Time: 3hours Max.Marks:60 Answer any five questions All questions carry equal marks --1. Explain the method of calculating the LOLP of a generating system. What are the inadequacies of LOLP as an index of unreliability? A generating system consists of two units of 30MW with = 0.4 / year and = 9.6 / year . The daily peak loads have the following distribution.

NR

2.

Daily peak load(MW) 50 40 30 20

No. of days as a fraction of total 0.3 0.4 0.2 0.1

Estimate the expected number of days in a year in which the daily peak exceeds the generation capacity. 3.a) b) 4. Explain the frequency distribution function and cumulative frequency distribution function of exact capacity states. Explain sequential addition algorithm for a new unit to the system. A generation system consists of two units of capacities 20MW and 30MW with forced outage rates of 0.1 and 0.05/day respectively. If the mean time to repair of either unit is 20 days, calculate the probability and frequency of failure of the system if it has to deliver a steady load of 25MW. Explain the SCDE Load model for generation system reliability. What are exact margin states and cumulative margin states? Explain the concept and necessity for operating reserve. Explain the concept of Rapid start and hot reserve units. Give the state space diagrams of two systems interconnected with unlimited and limited tie line capacity. What are passive and active events? Explain how the effects of changing weather conditions are modeled.
