Lesson 4 Introduction into 3D Shape

Learning area Numeracy

Lesson topic 3D Shapes

Date and Time Thursday 27th October 11am

Overall duration (time) 1hr

Curriculum links Make models of three-dimensional objects and describe key features
(ACMMG063)
Elaboration:
● exploring the creation of three-dimensional objects using origami,
including prisms and pyramids

Objectives By the end of this lesson, students will be able to:

1. Identify 3D shapes.
2. Describe key features of a 3D shape.
3. Select shapes that make up a 3D shape.

Student prior Students are able to use their 2D shape knowledge to help make connections
knowledge to 3D shapes. Using their prior knowledge of identifying key features of a 2D
shape helps them understand 3D shape properties.

Lesson preparation Organise 2 powerpoint presentations

Learning strategies & Warm Up / First Activity

activities: Introductory Time Gather students to the mat, ask helpers to hand out whiteboards. Begin
teaching when you have all full attention. Start looking for students who are
Strategies ready and move their names up.
HOCUS POCUS - EVERYONE
FOCUS. Grab students Once you have their full attention, ask the question “what is a 2D shape”?
attention. Discuss with students what they think a 2D shape is based off yesterdays
lesson.

Then ask, “What is a 3D shape“? Discuss with the students what they think a
3D shape is.

Go through powerpoint slides once student and yourself have discussed the
ideas of 3D shape.

Slides include: recap of 2D shapes, introduction into 3D shapes, key

terminology, different 3D shape and properties, prism and pyramid and What
Shape am I - 3D shape edition.

Students will use whiteboards to answer What Shape Am I questions for 3D

shapes.

Ending slide will present the instructions for the first activtiy. Go through
instructions ask students if they have any questions. Then repeat the
instructions once more.

Have helpers hand out the Math workbook and you hand out the worksheets.

Learning strategies & Second Activity

activities: Students use the 3D Shape Properties worksheet and fill them out. Set clear
developmental
goals and intentions here. Dont drag this worksheet on, set a time limit on
Time
this sheet 15 minutes to complete.

Instruction
When you can see students are starting to finish remind them to glue the
sheet in their math workbooks and put the books on the orange table.
Instruct students to grab their ipads set them in front of them on the mat.

Go through second powerpoint slides, breakdown 3D shapes into there nets.

Slides include:
- What shapes make a 3D shape?
- What are nets?
- How do we pull apart different shapes

Ending slide: blooket

name. Once all kids are logged begin the blooket game.

If there is still time, end the lesson with a what shape am I difficult 3d shape.

Differentiation Struggling students, breakdown concepts into chunks, remind students 3D

shapes are multiple 2D shapes. Provide visual images where students can see
where to located all features. Model and provide explicit instructions on what
you want the students to do. Set small goals and that reach the same lessons
objective achievements.

Key questions 1. What are 3D shapes?

2. How can we differentiate between 2D and 3D shapes?
3. What is the difference between Prism and Pyramid?

Assessment of student Diagnostic Assessment: Discussing before introducing the powerpoint,

learning “What are 3D shapes”?
Formative Assessement: Testing students understanding through the course
learning, “What shape am I” activity and Kahoot activity
This relates to the lesson objectives; identifying key features, describing and
Selecting 3d shapes as well as selecting 2D shapes that make up 3D shapes.
* using these assessment strategies helps pinpoint which students are
working well through this lesson and which student need extra guidance and
how can I provide that guidance, what alternative activity can I propose in
order to expand their understanding *

Reflection 1. How did the student grasp the lesson?

2. Were they any misconceptions present in the students learning and
understanding?
3. How can I improve my lesson?

Next lesson Creating 3D shape models
