FIELD STUDY 1 LEARNING EPISODE Creating an

FS 5 Appropriate Learning
Environment

SPARK Your Interest

This learning Episode provides an opportunity to examine how classrooms are

structured or designed to allow everyone’s maximum participation for effective learning. You
should be able to examine how classroom management practices affect learning. This
Episode enhances the application of the theories learned in the following professional subject
such as Facilitating Learner-Centered Teaching and The Child and Adolescent Learners and
Learning Principles.

TARGET Your Intended Learning Outcomes

At the end of this Episode, I must be able to:

 plan on how to manage time, space, and resources;
 provide a learning environment appropriate to the learners and conducive learning.
REVISIT the Learning Essentials

The classroom climate that is conducive for learning is one that is non-threatening yet
business-like. It is a classroom where, when creating audio-visual presentations, the
following are observed:
 Specific classroom rules and procedures are clear.
 Classroom rules and procedures are discussed within the first few days of the school.
 Students are involved in the designs of rules and procedures.
 Techniques to acknowledge and reinforce acceptable behavior are employed.
 Clear limits for unacceptable behavior are established and negative consequences
such are communicated.
 Classroom processes are democratic.

Activity 5.1 Managing Time, Space and Learning Resources

Resource Teacher: Yvonne B. Raymundo Teacher Signature:

School: Feliciano Yusay Consing National High School

Grade/Year Level: Grade 7 Subject Area: English Date: December 26, 2023

OBSERVE
Observe and use the observation sheet provided for you to document your observations

1. As you observe the class, look into the characteristics of the learners. Note their
ages.
 I was assigned to observe Grade 7 students and their age ranges from 12-14.
In my 11 weeks of observation, I can really say that Grade 7 students are full
of energy, they are so active and they never seem to get tired after doing so
many things already. They are young and their bond inside the classroom is
just pure and innocent. Girls likes to hang out with girls as well and just talk
random staffs, sometimes they make themselves busy mastering the art of
makeup. On the other hand, boys like to keep each other’s company as well
and they bond by playing mobile games with their phone.
2. How many boys are there? How many girls?
 There are a total of 49 Students inside the classroom, 27 of them are boys
and 22 are girls.
3. Focus on their behavior. Are they already able to manage their own behavior?
 Grade 7 students still needs the guidance of the teacher all the time.
Although some of them are behaving like an adult already, but there are also
some, especially boys who often argue with one another which sometimes
lead to a more serious thing. Considering their age, it is only normal that
they can’t still be able to manage their behavior all the time.
4. Can the learners already work independently?
 Grade 7 students are still learning to work independently, although they
have been working individually with some of their task and activity, but they
still need the guidance of the teacher because they ask question from time to
time and they need the supervision of the teacher in order to be able to stay
focus on what they are doing.
5. Describe their span of attention.

 Students are scheduled to have a 1-hour class every subject and I can say
that their attention and focus does not really run that long because after 15
or 20 minutes of discussion, you would see some of them spacing out
already because they are not interested anymore on the topic being
discussed. Which is why, it is very important for a teacher to think of ways
on how he/she may be able to consistently have the attention of the
students from the beginning up to the end of the class discussion.

ANALYZE
Analyze and answer these questions on observed classroom management practices. It is also
good to ask the teacher for additional information, so you can validate your observation.
Write your notes below and then organize your data in the Table that follows.

1. Are there areas in the classroom for specific purposes (storage of teaching aids,
books, students’ belongings, supplies, etc.)? Describe these areas. Will it make a
difference if these areas for specific purposes are not present?
 There are 49 students inside the classroom already and there is barely
enough space left for some storage or a shelf. You can only see students
chair and teachers table inside the classroom plus their water dispenser.
There is also a little room at the back where they keep their cleaning tools
and I think that having that room is important since it keep things together
and although it doesn’t entirely affect the learning of the students but it
serves a specific purpose and without it, the room would probably be a
mess.
2. Are there rules and procedures posted in the room? List them down. Do these rules
reinforce positive behavior?
 Nothing is posted inside the classroom and the walls are bare as mandated
by the DepEd Secretary. However, there are still rules and regulations
inside the classroom that students must follow and although I never really
saw a copy of it, but by observing, I learned that while the class is ongoing,
no students are allowed to go out except if they have to use the comfort
room. The use of bad words is also strictly prohibited inside the classroom
and all mobile phones must be at the teachers table when having a class.
3. Did the students participate in making the classroom rules? If the Resource
Teacher is available, ask him / her to describe the process. What’s the effect of
students’ participation in rule – making on student’s behavior?
 I honestly don’t know whether or not the students have participated in
making the classroom rules since I and my cooperating teacher haven’t
really discussed about it but one thing is for sure, the students are well
aware of the things that they must and must not do inside the classroom. In
fact, they were able to share with me some of the rules that they have
inside the classroom which according to them is set by Ma’am Yvonne,
their class adviser. In addition, I think that having the students participate
in rule making is important because through this, they may be able to also
share their part and point of view which should also be considered and I
think that it will create a huge impact since it will be easy for them to
follow the rules the they made collaboratively.
4. What are the daily routines done by the Resource Teacher? (prayer, attendance,
assignment of monitors, warm – up activities, etc.) How are they done?
 My cooperating teacher always starts the class with a Prayer and often time
she is the one leading it. In doing so, everyone is usually requested to
stand. Next is the checking of attendance where students’ names are called
and they just have to say “Present” if they are around. The next routine is
the review of the previous lesson where random names are called to share
what they have learned from the past lesson they’ve discussed. Next is the
introduction of the new lesson wherein my cooperating teacher would
usually drop the word and ask the class if they are familiar or if they have
any idea about the word and share their thoughts. After which, my
cooperating teacher usually let the students answer a short pre-test from the
module and check it right away then proceed to the discussion. If there is
still remaining time, she would usually give a quiz to the students but if
not, she will just ask them to study for a quiz the next day.
5. Is there a seating arrangement? What is the basis of this arrangement? Does this
help in managing the class?
 Students seats are arranged alphabetically, right side of the room are all
girls and left side are all boys. I am not exactly sure as to the basis of this
arrangement but I believe that this helps the teacher to easily identify and
be familiar with the names of the students. In addition, this seating
arrangement allows the teacher as well to easily know if who are not
around in the class.

6. Observe the noise level in the classroom. How is this managed?

 Noise inside the classroom are usually manageable but if it is getting out of
control already and the students just refuses to listen to anything that my
cooperating teacher is saying, she usually stops the discussion, she will just
stand at the front, not say a word and just look at everyone blankly and that
is when all of them will realize their actions and stop right away from
making any more noise. When everyone is quiet already, she will then
continue with the discussion.
7. If a learner is not following instruction or is off – task, what does the Resource
Teacher do? Describe the behavior strategies used.
 Situation like this happens almost all the time and what my cooperating
teacher is doing when the students keeps asking on what to do and how to
do it, is she would still try to explain in a calm manner even though she
explained it already but when it keeps repeating, she would ask students to
read the instruction, ask how they understood it and confirm whether they
got it right, and if they still don’t understand it, she would usually make or
show everyone an example.
8. What does the Resource Teacher do to reinforce positive behaviors? (behavior
strategies)
 Having positive behavior is one important thing that students has to
develop with of course the help of the teacher. In my observation, the
things that my cooperating teacher do to reinforce positive behavior among
students are as follows; Setting of Rules, Building Good Relationship
with Students, Praising Students, Addressing Problems in a Friendly
Manner, and Always Being Positive. It is true that students are a lot to
handle and there are even times when teachers are almost losing their
patience. However, since they are considered to be the second parent of
every child at school, they really have to be extra patient and understanding
and one way to remedy this problem is through reinforcing positive
behavior among students.
REFLECT
Reflection as a future teacher

Why do you need to enforce positive discipline?

I experienced being a high school student myself that’s why I know how it feels like to be
scolded by the teacher whenever I did something inappropriate. Now going back to my alma
mater as a student teacher this time, I now realized and understand the feeling of a teacher
because I’ve experienced it. The need to discipline students and call them out whenever they
are doing something bad is the duty of the teacher and it can be very challenging knowing
how students right now are so aware of their rights that they mistook discipline as a violation
of it.
Conflict regarding students’ behavior is a common problem faced by every teacher and
one way to remedy this situation is by enforcing positive discipline. Using positivity to
manage classroom behavior is a far more effective tool than reacting to negative situations as
they come up. There are numbers of reason why positive discipline must be enforced and
here are some; One important advantage of using positive reinforcement is that students
actively enjoy being present and learning in the classroom. Positive discipline is a more
effective way to manage misbehaving students in the classroom, rather than using
punishment or rewards. It allows students to learn and adapt their behaviors to meet
expectations in the classroom, while simultaneously teaching them how to make better
choices in their path to adulthood. In addition to helping students learn and make better
decisions down the road, positive discipline strategies can assist teachers in overcoming the
many obstacles that arise in the classroom. In actuality, implementing positive discipline in
the classroom has numerous advantages beyond just improving academic performance.
In this era where students are being disciplined in a far different way compared to
how teachers would discipline students before, we really need to enforce positive discipline
and not force students to just obey what they are told to do. It is important to use positive
reinforcement in the classroom because a student who experiences positive reinforcement
often shows a greater willingness to demonstrate positive behavior (Rumfola, 2017). Positive
discipline is like a gentler way of imposing rules and regulations to students and I find it very
important considering that students in this age can be very aggressive at times. Enforcing
positive discipline doesn’t just allow students to be held accountable for their wrong doings
and actually learn from it, but it also teaches them that they should treat people the exact
same way they wanted to be treated and that if they want to be respected, they must as well
respect others.

ANALYZE

1. How did the classroom organization and routines affect the learners ' behavior?
 Classroom organization and routines really have a positive effect to learner’s
behavior. Not only that it enables them to be familiar with the things that they
must do every day, but it allows them to become confident and ready,
knowing that they are aware of what is expected of them. Classroom
organization as well helps students to become more focus on their studies and
as a result, they perform better in whatever task assigned to them.
2. What should the teacher have in mind when she / he designs the classroom
organization and routines? What theories and principles should you have in mind?
 Designing classroom organization and routines is one important task as a
teacher and the following theories and principles are to be considered;
Behaviorism – All the teacher needs to do is teach the students to associate
some behaviors with negative consequences and other behaviors with positive
consequences.
Assertive Discipline – Teachers must be proactive in asserting students’ rights
to learn. This means setting clear rules and guidelines and putting in place
clear punishments for students who do not adhere to the rules. When teachers
are seen to be in control and follow-through on the consequences of
misbehavior, children will trust, respect and follow their educator.
Democratic Classroom – A emocratic classroom transfers power from
teachers to students. The goal is to encourage students to think deeply about
how they want a classroom to work. When a student has to think about what
they want, they will hopefully come up with rules based around fairness,
justice and mutual respect.
Responsible Thinking Process (RTP) – Encourage students to think about
how to achieve their goals without harming others. Promote mutual respect
between students and teachers, because teachers listen to students and let
students think through moral issues.
Rogers’s Unconditional Positive Regard – Even when a student misbehaves,
the teacher should show the student “Unconditional Positive Regard”. This
means that the teacher should show the student that they always believe in the
student, believe they can improve, and have goodness inside them.
3. Which behavior strategies were effective in managing the behavior of the learners? In
motivating students? Why were they effective?
 There are lots of strategies that a teacher can use to effectively manage
learner’s behavior but for me, the following are the ones that creates most
impact and positive change to students’ behavior;
Set Rules Together with Students – Rules, like routines, aid in enhancing
student behavior. The class might, however, reject rules if the teachers
establish them themselves. However, when students take responsibility for the
rules, the teacher can use peer pressure to enforce them and enhance behavior
control.
Use Positive Language – Negative language has a way of encouraging
inappropriate behavior. Students generally enjoy doing things that adults tell
them not to do. Therefore, speak positively instead of starting a chain reaction
of behavioral issues. Positive language makes the students feel respected,
leading to better behavior
Develop a Relationship with Your Students – Get to know each student on a
personal level. Discovering their likes and dislikes must take some time. The
teacher’s ability to maintain students' interest will increase if the lessons are
focused on their interests. In addition, knowing your students will help you
identify some triggers for behavioral problems.

REFLECT

Reflect on the following and write your insights.

1. Imagine yourself organizing your classroom in the future. In what grade year level do
you see yourself? What routines and procedures would you consider for this level?
Why?
I can imagine organizing my own classroom in a way that is appropriate to
the kind of learners that I have which I would like to assume is Grade 7. Having been
able to experience handling Grade 7, I learned how active they can be which I why I
plan to organize and design my room by having shelves or cabinet which I may use as
a storage for students’ record such as quizzes, exams, and projects and secure it with
lock for protection of the files.
Handling young minds can be very challenging but having been able to
experience it, I now have a little idea on how I may be able to teach or educate them
using proper routines and procedure that best suits them. I would like to apply
everything I learned from my Field Study which I think is effective for the students
and modify it to suit my future learners. Routines such as Prayer, Checking of
Attendance, Review of Previous Lesson, Discussion, Quizzes, and Activity will still
certainly be included but other things that will be added to that routine will depend on
the type or kind of learners that I will have in the future.
Classroom procedure is also one important thing that I needed to come up
with and I would like still to apply what I have learned during my field study and one
important thing is teaching students how to become responsible and one way of doing
it is by creating cleaners, wherein everyone has their own assignment. Since they are
the one staying in the classroom most of the time, they must learn on how to keep it
clean and organized for their own benefit as well.
I would also use strategies such as Setting Classroom Rules with Students,
Using Positive Language when interacting with them and Develop a Relation with My
Students. I believe that these strategies are necessary because not only that I will get
to know them or that I will be able to actually discipline and educate them, but by
using these strategies, I believe I will be able to hear, acknowledge and understand my
students and live by my role as their parent at school.
2. Make a list of the rules you are likely to implement in this level. Why would you
choose these rules?
Don’t be late. Always come to school on or before time
 This teaches students how to be punctual, realize the value of time and respect
everyone’s schedule.
The use of bad words is strictly prohibited
 Students has to understand that the use of bad words is inappropriate and very
offensive which is why they shouldn’t be using that language.
Always sit on your assigned chair
 Making sitting arrangement is necessary especially with Grade 7 in order to
stop them from making unnecessary noise while class is ongoing.
No phones during class discussion
 The use of phone during class discussion is a huge disrespect to the teacher
and to anyone talking in front, which is why having this rule is very important.
Respect Everyone
 Students must learn how to respect others if they want to be respected as well.
3. Should learners be involved in making the class rules? Why?
 In my own personal opinion, I believe that learners must be involved in
making class rules because this way, they will be part of decision making
which is very important since they will be able to share their thoughts, opinion
and point of view about everything. In addition, having students be involved in
making class rules will make a better communication and they will most likely
follow that rules since they were part of making it and everyone agreed on
setting that rules. Students will feel empowered since they’ve been heard and
considered.
