A New Framework of Numerical Distance Relay Using LabView

This document discusses a new framework for implementing a numerical distance relay using LabVIEW. It presents a model of a mho distance relay that is first designed in PC using LabVIEW software and then tested using Power System Simulink. The relay prototype is then realized using a National Instruments NI USB-6009 data acquisition card to acquire real-time voltage and current signals, process them digitally, and output a tripping signal. Simulation results show that the relay operates correctly under different fault types at various locations on the transmission line.

I. INTRODUCTION
Power grid protection role is to make the power system
including transmission and distribution network as safe as
possible from the effects of equipment failures and events that
place it at risk. When the faults occur in such power grid,
protection schemes are designed to isolate faulted part, and
leave the healthy parts of the system connected in order to
ensure the continuity of the power supply. The operational

In the present work, the numerical distance relay is
designed and implemented.

By using LabVIEW as software tool development, we can

use a relay for multiple zones using only one software
environment with advanced built-in analysis and signal
processing libraries. The relay and transmission line
characteristics are introduced as inputs. The system can
monitor the characteristics of the distance relay as well as the
transmission line in real time using a waveform graph in the
LabVIEW front panel. Fig 5.

V. TESTING RESULTS
To validate the relay model that has been developed in
LabVIEW. MATLAB/SIMULINK is used to simulate power
system model for several operating and fault conditions as
shown in fig 7.The parameters of the power system model
using SIMULINK and the settings of the relay model using Fig 7. Power system SIMULINK model
LabVIEW are mentioned in table 1.
The results of the test being performed are presented
using figures which display the LabVIEW front panel of the
developed mho distance relay. We have tested seven different
cases:
Case one: phase A to ground fault at a distance of 70Km Case five: Phase B to phase C fault at a distance of 110Km.

Case two: Phase B to ground fault at a distance of 110Km.

Case six: Phase C to phase A fault at a distance of 140Km.

Case three: Phase C to ground fault at a distance of 140Km.

Case seven: Three phases fault ABC at a distance of 140Km.

Case four: Phase A to phase B fault at a distance of 70Km

VI.CONCLUSION
In this work, a new framework of protection scheme based
on the Mho type distance relay has been successfully
developed and implemented using LabVIEW software. After
testing its behavior under different fault conditions, the relay
model has been able to recognize the appropriate fault type.
Besides, the relay identifies the fault locations as expected.
