EC212 Assignment 1 Analog Circuits Theory

This document provides instructions for an assignment on analog circuits involving theory problems, LT Spice simulations, and requirements for submission. It includes 7 problems - 4 theory problems involving plotting characteristics of diode circuits and analyzing a full-wave rectifier circuit. It also includes 3 LT Spice simulation problems - simulating a half-wave rectifier, designing a bridge rectifier to convert 230V AC to 12V DC, and plotting the output of a common-source amplifier circuit. Students are instructed to show work, use LT Spice, and submit all files and screenshots in a single zip folder.

EC 212 Analog Circuits 2024-25
Assignment -1
Total marks:80

Instructions
Answer all questions. Clearly show all the required steps. Scan and upload a single PDF (Showing
all the calculation for theory + simulations problems) along with LT Spice (.asc) files with proper
numbering and include screenshot of the desired output from the LT Spice Simulation.
LT Spice (.asc) files and the PDF should be in a .zip file which would be name as IMT20225XX.zip.

Theory Problems
1. Plot Vout as a function of Iin for the circuits shown in Fig. 1. Assume a constant voltage
diode model, with a built-in potential of V0 . [10 Marks]

2. Plot the current flowing through R1 as a function of Iin for the circuits of Fig. 2. Assume a
constant-voltage diode model, with a built-in potential of V0 . [10 Marks]

3. While constructing a full-wave rectifier, a student mistakenly has swapped the terminals of
D3 as depicted in Fig. 3. Explain what happens with waveform. [10 Marks]

4. We wish to design a circuit that exhibits the input/output characteristic shown in Fig. 4.
Using 1-kΩ resistors, ideal diodes, and other components, construct the circuit. [10 Marks]

LT Spice Simulation Problems

5. The rectifier shown in Fig. 5. is driven by a 60-Hz sinusoid input with a peak amplitude of
5 V. Using the transient analysis in SPICE: [10 Marks]

(a) Determine the peak-to-peak ripple at the output.

(b) Determine the peak current flowing through D1 .
(c) Compute the heaviest load (smallest RL ) that the circuit can drive while maintaining
a ripple less than 200m Vpp .

Figure 5: Half-wave Rectifier

6. (a) Design a bridge rectifier that rectifies a standard AC mains of 230 V (RMS) 50 Hz
and converts it into a 12 V DC power supply assuming a diode ON voltage of 0.7 V.
Determine the transformer turns ratio (N1: N2) required to provide the expected DC
output voltage. For an average DC load current of 2 A determine the load (ripple
filtering) capacitor that can deliver a ripple of (Vr/Vp=5 %). Calculate the peak and
average diode currents when they are conducting ? What are the peak inverse voltages
of the diodes ? Note that the expected diode currents for full-wave-rectifiers (FWR)
will be half of the half-wave-rectifiers (HWR) for a given Vr/Vp. [10 Marks]

(b) Draw a schematic of the bridge rectifier with load & ripple filtering capacitor in LT-Spice.
Use two coupled Inductors with a Spice directive statement (K1 L1 L2 . . . ) to build
a transformer as shown below (Fig. 6.) (for the case of 1:1 transformer). Use a small
resistance in series with L1/L2. Use the diode model IN4148 (or any similar silicon
diode) for your design. Simulate the circuit. Obtain the measured peak voltage Vp ,
ripple voltage Vr , peak diode current and average diode current. Submit the screenshot
of all important waveform such as output ripple, diode current etc. [10 Marks]

7. Simulate the circuit shown in Fig. 7. in LT Spice and plot Vout Vs time for the values: RE =
50 Ω, gm = 0.1 S, rπ = 2.5 kΩ, and Vin = Sinusoid of frequency 60 Hz & Amplitude of 5 V.
