GENERAL INSTRUCTION FOR
SURFACE PREPARATION & PAINTING
SURFACE PREPARATION
In protection steel with paint, careful surface preparation is of almost importance.
If this surface preparation in neglected, the designed performance of paint will not be
ensured.
SURFACE PREPARATION OF BARE STEEL
(Pre-Fabrication Treatment)
1. Oil and grease will be removed by thinner- wiping after scraping firmly adhering
impurities off the surface.
2. Corrosive salt and sulphate on steel surface will be cleaned off by fresh water-washing
and then the surface will be dried with dry waste compressed air.
3. All milescale rust and foreign matter will be removed by shot grit or sand blasting.
Finally, the surface should be cleaned by blowing with compressed air.

PAINTING
1. WEATHER CONDITION
Full advantage should be taken of weather conditions to carry out painting whenever it
is favorable. Paint should be not applied on wet surface. Please do not apply
painting during raining. On the painting surface should be done at over 20°C and
below 85% R.H.. condition in Thailand. However, below 5°C some paint such as Alkyd
and Epoxy, slow down or stop the curing dramatically. Painting should not be carried
out when the surface temperature is less than 3°C above the dew point whether the
R.H. is below 90% R.H. Detail are mentioned in Structure for Application for Alkyd and
Epoxy coating.
2. PREPARATION & STORAGE
(a) Some painting components although perfectly stable at normal temperature will
react together at higher temperature causing thicking, etc. Some paint such as
water based paint should not be stored where temperature can become excessive.
(b)Shelf life of paint and if stored in normal condition.
Epoxy Paint = 12 months min., subject to reinspection
thereafter
Under normal condition temp. = 30ºC
(c) When paints are left standing, they very often tend to separate slightly. This is
caused by the different specific gravities of the ingredient. All paint must
therefore be carefully stirred and mixed until homogenized before using stirring
should be done from time to time in order to prevent such separation while
painting.
(d) Once opened some paint rapidly from a skin on the surface. Generally, the quick
drying types have this tendency, which is of course no fault of the paint but is due
to the natural process of drying. The skin must be removed before painting. This
precaution applied particularly when material sprayed for small particles of skin
should soon clog the gun.
(e) Most paints do not morally require adjustment under conditions of excessively high
or low temperature, a small amount of appropriate thinner do not exceed the
amount specified by the manufacture.
3. FILM THICKNESS
The dry film thickness of Shop Primer on a blasted steel surface should be measured
as follows :-
Place a smooth steel panel on blasted steel surface apply Shop Primer and measured
the dry film thickness on the steel panel and adequate electromagnetic thickness meter.
4. APPLICATION SPRAY
(a)Brush
The paint should be applied on the surface by lengthwise and crosswise
movements of the brush. Rough surface rivet heads, edges and angles should be
given special attention.
(b)Paint Roller
Cover the surface of the roller by spreading the paint. Paint at a slow and even
space up and down and cross. Do not spread the paint excessively. Particular
care should be taken when painting rivet heads and welding seams.
(c) Airless Spray
Most CHUGOKU products can be applied by spray. Which is more economic
method than conventional spray especially on large areas. The method is
quicker with less spill and the paint can be applied in thicker coats. The use of
airless spray require more of routine than conventional spray and great caution
must be exercised in handling the gun which works with very high pressure.

CORRECT AND INCORRECT USE OF SPRAY GUN

5. CLEANING OF TOOLS
The tools should be cleaned immediately after use. This is particularly important when
working with quick drying or two components paints in using spray equipment. It
should be cleaned after use by flushing with and adequate thinner. Keep clean the
nozzles.
INSTRUCTION FOR APPLICATION EPOXY &
POLYURETHANE COATING

CLEANING PRIOR TO PAINTING (Secondary surface preparation)

In surface preparation and cleaning of the surface, special attention should be given to the
welded parts and edges of steel construction. Dust, spatter, slag and etc. should be
removed.
1. Damaged part
Rusty parts should be cleaned by disc sander or other suitable method to the grade
SIS-St 3. Welding spatter, slag and other foreign matter should be removed by scraper,
scaling hammer or suitable tools. Areas burned by welding or other heat treatment,
including adjacent areas, should be cleaned by disc sander or suitable tools to SIS St
3. Welding parts should be cleaned by power brush or other suitable method.
2. Undamaged parts
Oil moisture, dust or other foreign matter should be removed by thinner, power brush,
disc sander, compressed air or vacuum cleaner, etc. After cleaning, a subsequent coat
should be applied as soon as possible.
MIXING OF MATERIALS
1. Mixing
Base and hardener should be mixed in the specified proportions and ensure a
homogeneous state. Since poor mixing may impair its drying property mixing should
be done by a pneumatic mixing machine or the like.
2. Thinning
Thinner may be added in spray application, but should never exceed the specification
amount.
3. Aging
When indicated necessary, the mixed materials should be aged longer than the
specified period before application. Insufficient aging causes blooming.

4. Pot life
The mixture should be used within the specified pot life.
PAINTING
Roller or Airless spray is most recommendable. With regard to spray application, cross
spraying (double spraying) is recommended to obtain uniform and specified film thickness. If
film thickness is found insufficient and additional seams, scallops, underside of longitudinal
should be touched up prior to spraying. In particular, underside of longitudinal must be
painted carefully, for it is difficult to obtain sufficient film thickness. Painting interval should
be kept as specified. If the painting interval is over than specified, the surface to be coated
should be roughened by sandpaper, disc sander or other adequate tools before application of
over coat.
CONTROL OF FILM THICKNESS
Film thickness should be controlled at the recommended mean value, unless otherwise
specified.
WEATHER CONDITION AND DRYING CONDITON
Generally, painting should be done at over 5°C and below 85% R.H. condition in Japan.
Painting should be not carried out when the surface temperature is less than 3°C above the
dew point, no mater what the R.H. is at the film.
PROTECTION OF PAINT FILM
1. Painted surface should be kept free from water or other liquid before drying through.
2. Painted surface should be kept free from welding sparkler dirt during and before touch-
free drying of the paint film.
3. Painted surface should be arranged to prevent possible damaged by foot-steps in tank’s
interior.
PRECAUTIONS FOR FIRE HAZARD AND HEALTH
1. Solvents are flammable, so attention must be given to prevent fire hazard. When painting
is carried out in confined spaces such as a tank’s interior, sufficient ventilation should
be provided during painting and during the drying process.

2. To prevent contamination of the skin by the paint, protective cream may be used for the
painters. Paint stain on skin, it should be wiped off by suitable thinner and then washed
by water
REPAIR METHOD
1. Repair method of small damaged portions.
(a) To remove the damaged parts by disc-sander at the damages parts with 20 mm.
to 50 mm. should be roughened by sand paper 100% of the precoated surface
should be roughened.
(b) Exposed parts of steel should be recoated by primer and these after Epoxy shall
be coated by brush.
DAMAGED PART
COATED FILM

PIPE BEFORE REPAIR PIPE AFTER REPAIR

2. Repair method of large damaged portion
Peel off spot producted by the lining film test & the damaged caused by other reasons shall
be cut off squarely, matching its portion with a sharp knife as shown below.

3. Next portion shall be enclosed about 20 mm. Larger by tapes from the cut off edge and the
enclosed previously lining film should be treated 100% with sandpaper.

20 mm.

The place where it

should be treated by
sand paper

20 mm.
4. The brush application should be preceded after completely finish the repair method
mentional above. It should be keep specified paint film thickness by brush paint
application. Paint will not be applied by spray, it will be required making surface roughness
with sand paper in advance.

7. HANDLING AND STORAGE

7.1. Precautions for safe handling
: When operators, whether spraying or not, have to work inside the spray booth, ventilation is unlikely to be sufficient to control
particulates and solvent vapour in all cases. In such circumstances they should wear a compressed air-fed respirator during the
spraying process and until such time as the particulates and solvent vapour concentration has fallen below the exposure limits.
: For personal protection see Section 8.
: Never use pressure to empty : container is not a pressure vessel.
: Always keep in containers of same material as the original one.
: Comply with the health and safety at work laws.
: Do not allow to enter drains or water courses.
: Operators should wear anti-static footwear and clothing and floors should be of the conducting type.
: Isolate from sources of heat, sparks and open flame.
: Avoid skin and eye contact.
: Avoid the inhalation of dust, particulates and spray mist arising from the application of this mixture.
: Avoid inhalation of dust from sanding.
: Smoking, eating and drinking should be prohibited in application area.
: Prevent the creation of flammable or explosive concentrations of vapour in air and avoid vapour concentration
higher than the occupational exposure limits.
: In addition, the product should only be used in areas from which all naked lights and other sources of ignition
have been excluded.
: Electrical equipment should be protected to the appropriate standard. No sparking tools should be used.
: Mixture may charge electrostatically: always use earthing leads when transferring from one container to another
Information on fire and explosion protection
: Vapours are heavier than air and may spread along floors.
: Vapours may form explosive mixtures with air.
7.2. Conditions for safe storage, including any incompatibilities
: Store in accordance with local regulations.
: Notes on joint storage
Store away from oxidising agents, from strongly alkaline and strongly acid materials
Additional information on storage conditions
: Observe label precautions.

8. EXPOSURE CONTROLS / PERSONAL PROTECTION

Engineering measures
: Provide adequate ventilation. Where resonably practicable, this should be achived by the use of local exhaust
ventilation and good general extraction. If these are not sufficient to maintain concentrations of particulates
and solvent vapours below the occupational exposure limits (OEL) suitable respirator must be worn.

Exposure Limits ACGIH TLV

Personal protection equipment
Respiratory Protection
: Use a properly fitted, air-purifying or air-respirator complying with an approved standard if a risk-
assessment indicates this is necessary. Respirator selection must be based on known or anticipated
exposure levels, the hazards of the product and the safe working limits of the selected respirator.
When concentrations exceed the exposure limits shown above, worker must wear appropriate
respirators. Provision of other control such as exhaust ventilation should be considered if practical.
Eye Protection
: Wear safety eyeware, e.g. safety spectacles, goggle or visors to protect against the splash of liquid.
Eyeware should comply with an approved standard.
Wear a full face shield if mixing or pouring operations pose a risk of splashes.
An eyewash station is suggested as a good work place practice.
Hands Protection
: Gloves of an appropriate material should worn during mixing and application.
For prolonged or repeated handling, use the following type of gloves: gloves; nitrile.
Barrier creams may help to protect the exposed areas of the skin but should not be applied
once exposure has occurred.
For right choice of glove materials, with focus on chemical resistance and time of penetration,
seek advice by the supplier of chemical resistant gloves.
Skin Protection
: Overalls which cover the body, arms and legs should worn. Skinshould not be exposed.
Barrier creams may help to protect areas which are difficult to cover such as face and neck.
They should howerve not be applied once ecposure has occurred. Petroleum jelly based types
Such as vaseline should not be used. All part of the body should be washed after contact.

: See Section 8 for information on appropriate personal protective equipment.
: See Section 13 for additional waste treatment information.

7. HANDLING AND STORAGE

7.1 Precautions for safe handling

: Keep away from sources of ignition.
: No smoking.
: Prevent unauthorised access.
: Containers which are opened must be carefully resealed and kept upright to prevent leakage.

7. HANDLING AND STORAGE

7.1 Precautions for safe handling
7.2 Conditions for safe storage, including any incompatibilities
: Store in accordance with local regulations.
: Notes on joint storage
Store away from oxidising agents, from strongly alkaline and strongly acid materials
Additional information on storage conditions
: Observe label precautions.

: Prevent unauthorised access.

: Containers which are opened must be carefully resealed and kept upright to prevent leakage.

Substance name STEL-15 min Long term-TWA-8hr
Polyaminoamide - -
Xylene 150 ppm 100 ppm
Ethylbenzene - 20 ppm
Iso-butanol 100 ppm 75 ppm

ACGIH (American Conference of Governmental Industrial Hygienist)

TLV=Threshold Limit Value - 8 hr/15 min. STEL=Short Time Exposure Limit (15m) - TWA=Time Weighted Average (8hr)
