Nature of Non-Communicable Diseases

Title
I. Introduction:

Disease is a particular abnormal condition and a disorder of a structure or

function that affects part or all of an organism. It is often interpreted as a medical
condition associated with specific symptoms and signs. There are two categories
of disease. Communicable disease are caused by pathogen or disease-causing
organisms and can be transmitted from one person to another or from animals to
people. Examples include common cold, influenza, cholera, dengue fever,
tuberculosis and warts. These diseases can be avoided by taking preventive
measures.
On the other hand, non-communicable disease (NCD) cannot be
transmitted from one person to another. Many of these disease are caused by
unhealthy lifestyle. Examples of non-communicable disease include
cardiovascular disease, cancer and diabetes.

II. MELC (with code):

Explains non-communicable diseases based on cause and effect, signs and

symptoms, risk factors and protective factors and possible complications. (H7DD-

NON-COMMUNICABLE DISEASES
Non communicable diseases are not caused by pathogens or disease-
causing organisms such as bacteria or viruses, but rather, by how people live, by
the conditions with which they are born or by the hazards around them. It also
includes diseases caused by a breakdown of the body tissues (degenerative
disease), poor diet, environmental and occupational hazards, stress and tension.
COMMON NON-COMMUNICABLE DISEASES
1. ALLERGY – a misguided reaction to foreign substances by the immune
system.
a. Hay fever – the most common of the allergic diseases and is
characterized by seasonal nasal symptoms that are due to pollens.
Signs and symptoms include:
 Runny nose
 Stuffy nose
 Sneezing
 Nasal itching
 Post nasal drip

b. Allergic conjunctivitis – is inflammation of the tissues layers

(membranes) that cover the surface of the eyeball and the
undersurface of the eyelid.
Signs and symptoms include:
 Redness under the lids and the eyes
 Watery, itchy eyes
 Swelling of the membranes

c. Allergic eczema – an allergic rash that is usually caused by skin

contact with an allergen and features the following signs:
 Itching, redness, and or dryness of the skin
 Rash on the face, especially among children
 Rash around the eyes, in the elbow creases, and behind the
knees, especially in adults.

d. Hives – can be caused by an allergic reaction, such as to a food or

medication, but they also may occur in non-allergic people.
Signs and symptom are:
 Raised red welts or swollen mark
 Intense itching
e. Allergic shock or (anaphylactic shock) – is a life-threatening
reaction that can affect a number of organs at the same time.
Signs and symptom are:
 Hives or reddish discoloration of the skin
 Nasal congestion
 Swelling of the throat
 Stomach pain, nausea, vomiting
 Shortness of breath, wheezing
 Low blood pressure

2. ASTHMA – a chronic lung disorder that causes airways to become

inflamed, which means that they swell and produce lots of thick mucus.
The following are the signs and symptoms of asthma:
 Shortness of breath
 Wheezing
 Coughing
 Chest tightness

3. CARDIOVASCULAR DISEASE – the disease of the heart and blood vessels.

a. Heart diseases
 Congenital heart disease
 Congestive heart failure
 Arrhythmia
 Rheumatic heart disease
 Myocardial infraction (heart attack)
b. Vascular (blood vessel) diseases
 Arteriosclerosis
 Hypertension or high blood pressure
 Stroke
 Aneurysm

4. CANCER- Caused by abnormal cells growing without control. As these

abnormal cells grow, they form in masses called tumors.

Warning Signs of Cancer: Remember the word CAUTION-UP!

C – hange in bowel or bladder habits
A – sore that does that not heal

fail to adequately filter waste products from the blood.
