Public Issues
a. “By such means the personal uneasiness of individuals is focused upon explicit
troubles and the indifference of publics is transformed into involvement with
public issues.” (pg 2) → In other words, peoples’ personal lives and issues
within it create public issues when their personal issues are unsolved.
“Issues have to do with matters that transcend these local environments of the
individual and the range of her inner life. They have to do with the
organization of many such milieu into the institutions of an historical society
as a whole, with the ways in which various milieux overlap and interpenetrate
to form the larger structure of social and historical life.” (pg 4) → Another
similar definition
b. The personal problem of war (surviving, getting paid, rank, etc.) relates with the
public issue (economical and political issues)
c. Public Issues such as politically, economically, religion based, education, etc.
relate to peoples’ personal lives. Without the source of millions of individuals,
there would not be any public issues at hand.
d. Right now an example of a public issue would be climate change. Individuals are
overconsuming food, clothing, energy etc. in the United States and other first
world countries. It is affecting people in third world countries and minority
groups around the world creating this idea of environmental racism.

2. Personal Troubles
a. “Troubles occur within the character of the individual and within the range of his
or her immediate relations with others; they have to do with one's self and with
those limited areas of social life of which one is directly and personally aware”
(pg 4). Later on in the text it says “A trouble is a private matter: values cherished
by an individual are felt by her to be threatened” (pg 4).
b. When one person is unemployed, it is a personal problem. They are lacking the
skills of the workforce, but when hundreds/thousands of people are unemployed,
it becomes a public issue. Another example of personal trouble is marriage.
c. Personal troubles are just any problems that arise in your own life. It could be
trouble with your friends, family, peers, significant other, or any other
relationship. But, it could also be within yourself with your mental health, self-
confidence, work-ethic, etc.
d. An example of a personal trouble many college students face is procrastination. It
is considered a personal trouble until the only class doesn’t do the assignment or
reading on time. After that, it would affect the whole class agenda and become a
public issue.

3. Sociological Imagination
a. “is the capacity to shift from one perspective to another - from the political to the
psychological;” (pg 3)
“enables us to grasp history and biography and the relations between the two
within society” (pg 2)
“enables its possessor to understand the larger historical scene in terms of its
meaning for the inner life and the external career of a variety of individuals” (pg
2)
All three definitions are similar, but the wording is a little different. I personally
like the one of page three because its wording clicks for me.
b. Sociological Imagination would allow me to look at the budgets of one family
and compare it with national budgets (pg 3). Also it says “theological school to
the military establishment; from considerations of an oil industry to studies of
contemporary poetry” → These examples I don’t see the connection as much.
c. Sociological Imagination is the idea of switching from a personal lens (your own
ideas, experiences, social bubble) to a worldwide view. You can grasp the big
picture/main idea while comparing and contrasting the idea to your own life and
the lives of others around you.
d. In my life, I could compare how men treat me and my friends. I could also look
around the world at different countries to see how men treat women there. In the
United States, there is a male superiority complex, but women are still allowed to
control their own lives. Women might just get paid a little less, or not taken
seriously. In other countries, girls might not be able to go to school, hold certain
jobs, etc.

4. Biography and History


a. “Individuals and society…self and world” (pg 1).
“That is its task and its promise” (pg 2).
b. People are affected by worldly issues more than ever before with technology and
rapid communication. The text explains how people are affected by politics,
revolutions, revolts, and imperialism more than before.
c. Biography and history is the way that individualism connects to the entire world.
Your biography is your life and all of the obstacles within your life while the
history is literal historical events and events taking place in the world right now.
d. Biography and history can relate to life right now with the Covid-19. Biography
would be how each individual in the world is or is not affected by covid. For me, I
was fortunate to have a good time during quarantine and I have never gotten
covid. Other people could have died, gotten really sick, or been economically
affected by covid. The history part would be connecting Covid-19 to other
pandemics, the major outbreak to how Covid-19 affects us now, or memorializing
the people who died.
5. Milieu
a. “the social setting that is directly open to her personal experience and to some
extent her willful activity” (pg 4) → similar to personal troubles, or
individualism
b. During war, someone’s milieu is their self-willingness and fight, or to make their
death meaningful. Another text example would be within a city, or urban sprawl
within the city, a person’s character or actions to help the urban sprawl.
c. This word is kind of confusing for me, but I think that milieu is someone’s
environment and experiences that might change their personality or characters in
a situation. Relating back to the war situation, a person would not have the same
self-willingness or fight if they were not in war. In the other example, if the
person did not live in a big city, they possibly would not care as much about
urban sprawl.
d. In today’s society, a person who is affiliated with a minority group would have
more desire to take a stance, protest for their rights, etc. More specifically, a
member of the LGBTQ+ community would more likely stand up for same-sex
marriage laws, the recent drag queen laws, etc. than someone who wasn’t apart of
the community.

6. What is his overall argument?


Mills’ overall argument was to explain how sociological imagination is helpful in today’s
society. We need to try to put ourselves in other peoples’ shoes to understand how the
world works, and to make progress in society.

7. Why is sociological imagination helpful?


Sociological imagination is helpful for understanding how people in our lives and people
across the world live. With the understanding from the sociological imagination, people
can start helping other people, judging people less for their different beliefs and opinions,
and keep progressing.
