What I Need to Know

In this Module, you will learn how to give the number of


syllable in a word.
It is important to learn this lesson so that you will be
aware that each letter has a sound and a group of letters
has another blended sound contained in a word or a word
itself. You need to know this group of letters taken into one
unit is called syllable that will lead you to decode words. A
syllable with consonant-vowel-consonant pattern is
already a word itself. Given words can be written or
spoken that will develop good listening skills.
At the end of the lesson, you can give the number of
syllables of a given word.

What is It

Today, you will give the number of syllables of spoken


words.

Let’s define first what is a syllable.

Syllable - is a single unit of written or spoken word, an


unbroken sound used to make up words.

Example of one-syllable word: man

For a 2-syllable word, for example the word “doctor”.


It has two syllables: the “doc” and “tor”.

The first syllable is “doc” and the second syllable is


“tor”.
doc+tor = doctor = 2 syllables

Another example is the word “alligator”. The syllables


are “al” “li” “ga” and “tor”.

al+li+ga+tor= alligator = 4
