ACTIVITY 2-PHYSICS 12

Name: Arrel Alfonso L. Belda Section: Stem 2-A

I. Express the following numbers in scientific notation(10pts)

a. 15,200,000 = 1.52 × 10⁷

b. 0.0000072 = 7.2 × 10^-6

c. 98,000,000,000 = 9.8 × 10¹⁰

d. 0.0009850 = 9.85 × 10^-4

e. 909,000,000 = 9.09 × 10⁸

II. Convert the following numbers from scientific notation to standard form: (10pts)

a. 5.6×104 = 56,000

b. 3.45×10−6 = 0.00000345

c. 7.89×108 = 789,000,000

d. 1.00 x10-5 = 0.00001

e. 8.010x10-3 = 0.00801
III. Determine The Number Of Significant Figures In The Following Measurements. Explain Your
Answers. (10pts)

4 significant figures a) 1.000 x10²³

● In the number 1.000×10²³, significant figures include all digits in the coefficient
(1.000) and the exponent (10²³). Trailing zeros after the decimal point count as
significant because they are part of a measured value. Thus, the coefficient has
four significant figures. The exponent (10²³) is precisely defined, and the
presence of the decimal point also signifies that the zeros are not just
placeholders but are measured values.

3 significant figures b) 303,000,000

● In the number 303,000,000, significant figures encompass all non-zero digits and
any zeros positioned between them. For instance, the digit 3 and all zeros within
the number are considered significant. However, trailing zeros at the end of
whole numbers, like those in 303,000,000, are not deemed significant. Hence,
there are three significant figures in 303,000,000.

6 significant figures c) 90000.0

● In the number 90000.0, significant figures encompass all non-zero digits and any
zeros positioned between them, including the trailing zero after the decimal point.
Commencing with the non-zero digit 9, there are four zeros between it and the
decimal point. Additionally, the trailing zero after the decimal point is also
significant. Thus, the number 90000.0 comprises six significant figures.

3 significant figures d) 0.00600

● The number 0.00600 has three significant figures. The zeros after the decimal
point and before the first non-zero digit are not significant; they are simply
placeholders. Therefore, only the digits 6, 0, and 0 are considered significant,
giving a total of 3 significant figures.

6 significant figures e) 1.00600

● The number 1.00600 contains six significant figures. Every digit in the number,
including the non-zero digits and the zeros between them, contributes to the
precision of the measurement. Additionally, the trailing zero after the last
non-zero digit is also significant. Hence, there are six significant figures in the
number 1.00600.
IV. Perform the following calculations and express the results with the
appropriate number of significant figures:(20pts)

a. 45.67+3.4= 49.1

→ 45.67+3.4 = 49.07

→ 45.67 has 4 significant figures

→ 3.4 has 2 significant figures

→ Therefore 49.07 will be rounded off resulting in 49.1 with 3 significant figures.

b. 8.21×2.05= 16.8

→ 8.21×2.05= 16.8305

→ Both numbers (8.21 & 2.05) have 3 significant figures

→ The least number of significant figures is 3

→ Therefore the answer will be rounded off to 3 significant figures

→ 16.8305 → 16.8

c. 12.30 = 2.70
4.56
→ 12.30/4.56= 2.6973684
→ 12.30 has 4 significant figures
→ 4.56 has 3 significant figures
→ The least number of significant figures is 3
→ Therefore the answer will be rounded off to 3 significant figures
→ 2.6973684 → 2.70
15L d. The hydrogen gas stored in a large weather balloon weighs 13.558 g.
What is the volume of the balloon if the density of hydrogen is 0.089 g/L.
(density= __mass__)

volume

Given:
● 13.558g of hydrogen gas
● 0.089 g/L density of hydrogen

Find:
● Volume of the Balloon

Solution:
● density=mass/volume
→ 0.089g/L=13.558g/volume
→ v = 152.337L
→ 0.089g/L has 2 significant figures
→ 13.558L has 5 significant figures
→ The least number of significant figures is 2
→ Therefore the answer will be rounded off to 2 significant figures
Answer:
● 152.337L
→ 15L with 2 significant figures
43.3m e. Find the perimeter of a fence that is measured as 5.2m, 8.1m, 11.6m & 18.4m.

Given:
● 5.2m, 8.1m, 11.6m & 18.4m

Find:
● Perimeter of a fence

Solution:
● Add all the lengths of the sides of the fence
→ 5.2m + 8.1m + 11.6m + 18.4m
Answer:
● 5.2m + 8.1m + 11.6m + 18.4m
→ 43.3m
→ 11.6m & 18.4m have 3 significant figures
→ 5.2m & 8.1m have 2 significant figures
→ Expressing the result to the appropriate number of significant figures,
considering that the operation is addition will result to 43.3m
