Boarding Schools:

DEFINITION, BENEFITS, TYPES, SCHOLARSHIPS:

 Definition:
A boarding school is a school where you live. Students stay on campus day and night.
It is such a great experience where you can make many friends from differents cultures
and increase your sense of responsibility and independence.

 BENEFITS AND CHALLENGES :


Boarding schools have many benefits, but you will also face a lot of challenges.

Benefits: To help students take more responsibility, to live with friends and learn
together, to learn how to structure your life, to do many extracurricular activities, to
have fun trips with friends, to maintain a healthy nutrition, to discover other cultures...

Challenges: Homesickness, difficulty to integrate, academic challenges and intensive


schedule, limited family time.

 Types of boarding schools:


There is different types of boarding schools, and each one has unique characteristics
that offer to students a unique experience.

Traditional boarding school: A comprehensive education program contains


academics classes, extracurricular activities and sports programs.

Therapeutic boarding school: A school formed to help students with emotional or


behavioral issues. Students receive counseling and support from professionals. It
contains academics classes, therapy sessions and social skills training.

Military boarding school: An institution that instill discipline, leadership and


teamwork in students. It includes academic classes, physical training and military
drills.

Religious boarding school: A faith based education program. It contains academics


classes, religious studies and community services.

International boarding school: An institution that cater to students from differents


countries and continents. It includes academic classes, language courses and cultural
activity.

P.S: There is many others types, but I presented the most knows one.

 Scholarships in boarding schools:

Definition of scholarship: A scholarship is a financial support awarded to a student,
based on his academic achievements or other criteria that may include financial need,
on the purpose of studying.

Types of scholarships: Many scholarships exist, but there is the mains one:

1. Merit based scholarships: for students who have outstanding academics


achievements. Exp: ‘Fulbright Foreign Student Program’
2. Need based scholarships: Based on the financial need of the student. One of
them is the “Greenhouse Scholar Program”
3. Athletic scholarships: Based on the student’s participation in a variety of
sports ranging from football to hockey.

 Davis International Scholars Program:


The world’s largest funded international scholarship program. It is provided for
international students with talents and integrity who needs financial support. The
scholarship covers tuition, room and board, and other expenses for two years of study
in the college.

To be eligible, you should be in the 10th or 11th grade. You should have academic and
leadership potential, meaning having more than 2.0 GPA. Finally, you have to
demonstrate financial need and be from one of the underrepresented countries.

The UWC Davis Scholarship is highly competitive, and only a few number of
scholarships are awarded each year.

The application process typically includes an online application, essays, letters of


recommendation and interview.

 The boarding schools in the most financial


aids:
1. Philips Academy Andover: Phillips Academy Andover is traditionally an
expensive boarding school; however, they offer financial aid of up to
100% for families who demonstrate the inability to pay the required tuition
fees but have kids that exhibit great talent, academic excellence, and
promise.
2. Philips Exeter Academy: Tuition is waived for families earning less than
$75,000, and Exeter has generous aid programs for middle and upper-
income families.
3. Choate Rosemary Hall: The school is committed to providing financial
assistance to families who demonstrate financial need, and it has a strong
financial aid program in place to help make a Choate education accessible
to all qualified students.
