Revision Note – Simple Present Tense
Simple Present Tense
The simple present tense is one of the most basic tenses and is usually the first
tense to learn. Even elementary school students learn more about the simple
present tense. The simple present tense can be used in the following situations:
- Explaining facts or general truths.
- Stating something that is done repeatedly (habitual action).
- Expressing ideas, opinions, approvals by using stative verbs, namely verbs
that cannot be formed continuously (verb+ing). Such as: think, believe,
understand, etc.
- Describes everything that is permanent. Such as a place to live, work, ability,
etc.
The simple present tense formula is as follows:

What needs to be considered in the simple present tense formula is a change in the
verb due to being juxtaposed with the subject. The changes are as follows:
🡺 If the subject in the sentence is the first person singular, the second singular,
and the third plural (I, You, We, They), then there is no change in the verb.
🡺 If the subject in the sentence is the third person singular (She, He, It), then
there is a change in the verb by adding -s/-es.

So, how to know the addition of this -s/-es suffix?
🡺 Generally, the root form of the verb is added -s. Example: read – reads, sit –
sits, stand – stands, run-runs, rise – rises.
🡺 Verbs ending in O, CH, SH, SS, X, or Z, add -es. Example: do – does, kiss –
kisses – watch – watches, fix – fixes, wash – washed
🡺 Verbs that end in Y, replace the letter 'y' with 'i' then add -es. Example: study
– studies, try – tries, fry – fries, cry – cries, worry – worries
🡺 Some verbs that end in Y, only add -s. Example: say – says, play – plays, buy
– buys, enjoy – enjoys

Simple Present Tense
Simple present tense adalah termasuk tenses yang paling dasar dan biasanya tense
yang pertama untuk dipelajari. Untuk siswa SD pun lebih banyak mempelajari
simple present tense. Simple present tense dapat digunakan dalam situasi sebagai
berikut:
- Menjelaskan fakta atau kebenaran umum.
- Menyatakan sesuatu yang dilakukan berulang-ulang (habitual action).
- Mengekspresikan ide, opini, persetujuan dengan menggunakan kata kerja
statif (stative verbs), yaitu kata kerja yang tidak bisa dibentuk continuous
(verb+ing). Seperti: think, believe, understand, dll.
- Menjelaskan segala sesuatu yang permanen. Seperti tempat tinggal,
pekerjaan, kemampuan, dll.
Rumus simple present tense adalah sebagai berikut:
Yang perlu diperhatikan dalam rumus simple present tense, berupa perubahan kata
kerja akibat disandingkan dengan subjek. Perubahannya sebagai berikut:
🡺 Jika subjek dalam kalimat merupakan orang pertama tunggal, kedua tunggal,
dan ketiga jamak (I, You, We, They), maka tidak ada perubahan kata kerja.
🡺 Jika subjek dalam kalimat adalah orang ketiga tunggal (She, He, It), maka ada
perubahan kata kerja dengan penambahan -s/-es.

Lantas, bagaimana mengetahui penambahan akhiran -s/-es ini?
🡺 Umumnya, kata kerja bentuk dasar ditambahkan -s. Contoh: read – reads, sit
– sits, stand – stands, run- runs, rise – rises.
🡺 Kata kerja yang berakhiran O, CH, SH, SS, X, atau Z,
ditambahkan -es. Contoh: do – does, kiss – kisses – watch – watches, fix –
fixes, wash – washed
🡺 Kata kerja yang berakhiran Y, huruf ‘y’ diganti ‘i’ kemudian ditambah -es.
Contoh: study – studies, try – tries, fry – fries, cry – cries, worry – worries
🡺 Beberapa kata kerja yang berakhiran Y, hanya ditambahkan -s saja.
Contoh: say – says, play – plays, buy – buys, enjoy – enjoys
Sedangkan untuk penggunaan “to be” dan “do/does” adalah sebagai berikut:
