Algebra

Algebra involves variables, coefficients, constants, and terms in algebraic expressions. Key elements include variables to represent unknown values, coefficients as numbers in front of variables, and constants as standalone numbers. Algebraic operations include addition by grouping like terms, subtraction by grouping like terms, multiplication by multiplying coefficients and variables, and division by writing the expression as a fraction and dividing coefficients and variables. Algebra is an important topic in mathematics involving operations on algebraic expressions.

Definition, Elements, and Examples of Algebraic Calculation

Operations
Understanding
Algebra is one of the basic materials that is important to study in mathematics
learning.

Algebra is a part of mathematics which includes the science of numbers,

geometry and analysis.

Algebraic forms contain letters or what are usually called variables.

Elements of algebra
Note the algebraic form as follows: 2x + 7

From the form of the problem, there are three types of founding elements of
algebra, namely :

1. Variables
A variable is a substitute symbol for an unknown value. This element is usually
written in alphabetical order.

From the example above, the variable included is the letter x.

2. Coefficient
Coefficients are numbers that usually accompany variables. This element is
located in front of the letter.

From the example above, the coefficient included is 2.

3. Constants
A constant is a number that stands alone in an equation, where there are no
letters or variables following it.
From the example above, the constant is 7.

4. Tribe
Terms are part of an algebraic form that is separated from arithmetic operations.
In this case, the calculation operation in question contains two or more variables.

For example, 2x + 4x + 7 or 2x + 4y + 7

Based on these two examples, it can be said that tribes are divided into two
types, namely like tribes and unlike tribes.

Similar terms are terms in algebraic form that have the same variables, so they
can be added or subtracted. For example, 2x and 4x.

Meanwhile, dissimilar terms are terms in algebraic form that have different
variables. These types of terms cannot be added or subtracted. An example is 2x
and 4y

Algebraic arithmetic operations

There are four types that can be applied in algebra. Namely addition,
subtraction, multiplication and division.

1. Addition
Algebraic addition can be simplified by grouping similar terms.

Problems example
The simple form of the algebra 4x + 9 - 5x – 2 is...

Solution :
Group like terms together 4x + 9 - 5x - 2
= 4x - 5x + 9 - 2
= (4 - 5)x + 7
= -1x + 7

-1x can then only be written with -x, likewise 1x can only be written with x. As
a result, the simple form of 4x + 9 - 5x - 2 is -x + 7
2. Subtraction
Just like addition, algebraic subtraction is also simplified by grouping similar
terms.

Problems example
The simple form of algebra 6ab - 3ac + 5bc - 4ac - 9bc - 2ab is...

Solution :
Group similar terms, that is, those that have the same variables.

6ab - 3ac + 5bc - 4ac - 9bc - 2ab

= 6ab- 2ab - 3ac - 4ac + 5bc - 9bc
= (6 - 2)ab - (3 + 4)ac + (5 - 9)bc
= 4ab - 7ac - 4bc

3. Multiplication
Algebraic multiplication is carried out by multiplying the coefficient values of
each variable being operated. Or, you can also multiply by variables which are
done as a whole, both coefficients and variables

Problems example
The result of 2(3x + 4y) is…

Solution :
First of all, use the formula for the distribution properties of multiplication for
the addition of term one and term two, namely :

a( b + c ) = ab + ac

(3x + 4y) = (2)(3x) + 2(4y)

2(3x + 4y) = 6x + 8y

So, the result of 2(3x + 4y) is 6x + 8y

4. Division
Algebraic division is usually solved in fraction form, and the solution is done by
dividing the respective coefficients and variables.

Problems example
The simple form of the algebraic division 72a^2 : 12a is...

Solution :
