The pie charts illustrate the proportion of people migrating to and from the UK in the year 2007 for six different reasons. Employment was the most common reason for migration. 30% of immigrants came to the UK for work, while 29% of emigrants left for work. Over a quarter of immigrants came for education while only 4% left for this reason. The proportions moving to accompany someone were similar at 15% and 13% respectively, while 32% of emigrants gave other or no reasons compared to 17% of immigrants.

30% of immigrants to the UK was to have a definite while the figure for
emigration was slightly lower, at 29%. Although merely 12% of immigrants
looked for a job, the proportion of people leaving for this purpose was noticeably
higher, at over a fifth (22%). Over a quarter of people immigrating to the UK
to pursue formal education while only 4% left the UK for this purpose

The proportions of those moving in and out of the UK to accompany someone


were quite similar, at 15% and 13% respectively. Although a significant
number of people gave other reasons or did not give a reason why they emigrated
(32%), this figure accounted for only 17% of immigrants.

OVERVIEW – What are the youngest/olderst group are worried about?

As can be seen from the chart, finances and heavy workload are the major
causes of stress among adults aged 25-54. However, as people age, they are
increasingly less likely to encounter these problems but have a higher tendency
to be worried for no specific reason and about health issues.

The main sourse of anxiety among people aged 25-54 is overwork, causing a
quarter of this group suffer. This is followed by weak financial stability, at
15%. By contrast, these two problems affect only a minority of those aged
over 65 years old (below 7%), while a much higher figure of about 15% of the
55-64s are worried about these issues.

No particular reason is the primary source of worries for individuals over 65


years old, at over 32%. This problem affects lesser and lesser in younger age
groups 55-64 and 25-54, at 17% and 7% respectively.

Health issues are apparently a minor concern among the two youngest groups
aged under 64, being mentioned by less than 10% of each group. In contrast,
this affects a larger percentage of 65-74 year old people (15%) and those over 75
(23%).
