Column Design 2024

The document contains 6 examples of designing reinforced concrete columns. Example 4.1 determines if a column is slender or not based on its dimensions and bracing. Example 4.2 designs a short column to resist axial and bending loads. Example 4.3 designs a biaxial column. Example 4.4 details the longitudinal and transverse reinforcement of a column. Example 4.5 designs a braced column subjected to axial and biaxial bending loads. Example 4.6 designs a slender column and calculates design moments using nominal curvature and stiffness approaches. The examples cover column classification, load calculations, material properties, interaction diagrams, and reinforcement detailing.

(1) The diameter of the transverse reinforcement (links, loops or helical spiral reinforcement)
should not be less than 6 mm or one quarter of the maximum diameter of the longitudinal bars,
whichever is the greater. The diameter of the wires of welded mesh fabric for transverse
reinforcement should not be less than 5 mm.
(2) The transverse reinforcement should be anchored adequately.
(3) The spacing of the transverse reinforcement along the column should not exceed scl, tmax
Note: For the value of scl, tmax , refer to the National Annex. The recommended value is the least of
the following three distances:
- 20 times the minimum diameter of the longitudinal bars
- the lesser dimension of the column
- 400 mm
Links,min = the largest of =1/4*20 =5mm or 6mm
scl,tmax = the lesser of = 20*12 =240mm or 200mm or 400mm

At section 250mm below and above beam and at lapped joints scl, tmax = 0.6*200 =120mm
