Physics SBA Timing A Pendulum

1) The document describes an experiment investigating how the length of a pendulum affects the time taken to complete oscillations. 2) The experiment found that as the length of the pendulum increased from 30cm to 40cm to 50cm, the time taken to complete 20 oscillations also increased from 23.42 seconds to 26.42 seconds to 28.64 seconds. 3) The conclusion is that increasing the length of a pendulum increases the time of its oscillation, as predicted by the hypothesis.

Title: Timing a pendulum

Hypothesis: If the length of a pendulum gets longer, then the time of its oscillation would
increase.

Aim: To investigate how the length of a pendulum affects the time taken to complete oscillations
at different lengths.

Material/Apparatus:
● Retort stand ● Meter ruler
● String ● Protractor
● Scissors ● Timer
● Bob

Procedure:
1. The retort stand was set up on a flat surface.
2. The retort stand was adjusted to allow the bob to flow freely.
3. Attach the first string to the retort stand, and then attach the other end of the string to the
bob.
4. The length of the string was adjusted to 50cm.
5. The length of the pendulum was tilted 10 degrees to the right and was released.
6. The timer was started as soon as the pendulum was released.
7. The process was repeated one time.
8. Steps 3 to 7 were repeated for the 40cm and 30cm strings.

Analysis: The experiment consisted of changing the length of the pendulum and timing how long
it took for the pendulum to complete one oscillation. The period of a basic pendulum was
influenced by its length and the acceleration caused by gravity. The method for calculating the
period of a basic pendulum had been created by T = 2π * √(l/g). Where T was the period of the
pendulum, l was the length of the pendulum, and g was the acceleration due to gravity.

The period of a pendulum was found to be directly proportional to the square root of the
pendulum's length using this calculation. As a result, as the length of the pendulum grew, so did
the time. A pendulum was set up and its length was varied by adjusting the position of the bob in
the experiment that examined the connection between the length of a pendulum and the time
required to finish oscillations at various lengths.

A stopwatch or meter was used to record the time it took the pendulum to finish one movement.
The experiment was repeated with various pendulum lengths, and the findings were recorded. The
graph showed a straight line between the length of the pendulum and the time needed to complete
one oscillation, stating that they are directly proportional. The inclination of the curve was used to
determine the value of gravity's acceleration.

Sources of Error: Human errors: The stopwatch was not stopped at the exact time the 20
oscillations were complete. The measurement of the ruler was not accurate.

Precautions: Multiple experiments at each length were carried out to guarantee that the findings
were consistent.

Limitations: The pendulum may not be completely straight going from left to right, resulting in
errors in measurement.

Conclusion: In conclusion, if the length of a pendulum were increased, then the time of its
oscillation would also increase.

Reflection: I learned that if you increase the length of the string in a pendulum, the time taken to
complete one oscillation increases.
