Gen Chem Reflection Journal

This reflection journal discusses topics covered in a general chemistry course, including matter, atomic structure, the periodic table, and naming inorganic compounds. Matter can exist in different states and is composed of elements or compounds. Atomic structure consists of protons and neutrons in the nucleus surrounded by electrons in energy levels. The periodic table organizes elements and shows how their properties change depending on position. Naming inorganic compounds applies prefixes, suffixes and modifiers to identify elements, ions, and structure.

REFLECTION JOURNAL
General Chemistry is one of the subjects that I undergo as a second year Bs criminology
student, the following Topics that we discussed in this semester are Matter, Atomic
Structure, Periodic table and Naming of Inorganic compound.

Matter

Matter refers to the physical substances that make up objects and materials in the natural
world. It can be thought of as the physical substance that everything is made of, from the
smallest subatomic particles to the largest structures in the universe.
I also conclude that Matter can take various forms, such as solid, liquid, or gas, and it
can be found in different states, such as pure or mixed, and it can be composed of
different elements or compounds.
However I understand that, in terms of its properties, such as mass, density, and
volume, and its behavior under different conditions, such as temperature, pressure, and
motion.

Atomic Structure

I have learned in this topic that Atomic structure actually refers to the arrangement of
protons, neutrons, and electrons within an atom. The nucleus of an atom contains protons
and neutrons, while the electrons orbit the nucleus in energy levels .
An atom consists of a positively charged nucleus, which contains protons and neutrons,
and a negatively charged of electrons that orbit around the nucleus.
I also learned that the number of protons in the nucleus of an atom determines the
element of an atom, with each element having a unique number of protons in its atoms.
Nevertheless , the number of neutrons in an atom can vary, leading to different isotopes
of the same element. Moreover , Electrons are arranged in energy levels and having a
specific number of electrons.

PERIODIC TABLE

The periodic table is a powerful tool for understanding the properties and behavior of
elements, and it has a lot of interesting features. For example, elements in the same group
have similar chemical properties due to the same number of valence electrons. The
periodic table also shows how elements can be classified as metals, nonmetals, or
metalloids based on their properties.

In addition, the periodic table can help us understand the relationships between different
elements and their properties. I also learned that elements in the same period have
increasing atomic numbers and electronegativities, which means that their chemical
properties become more similar as you move from left to right across a period.
Overall, the periodic table is a fundamental concept in chemistry that helps us understand
the properties and behavior of elements, and it's a great tool for us to use when studying
the properties of elements and their relationships with each other.

NAMING OF INORGANIC COMPOUND

Naming of inorganic compound is auite hard but enjoy to learn with it,Ive learned that
scientific and logical process of
recognizing and classifying inorganic compounds is called naming.
expressing the structures and chemical formulas of various substances.
The naming of inorganic compounds requires the application of modifiers, suffixes, and
prefixes.
which provide information about the , quantity, charge, and bonding of the atoms and
ions that comprise
the complex. Inorganic chemical names also correspond to their classification and
elements in the periodic table are grouped into metals, nonmetals, and metalloids.
Transition metals, noble gases, and halogens
In addtion, The main compound must be identified before any functional groups are
indicated when identifying an organic molecule. This is accomplished by appending a
series of suffixes and prefixes to the parent compound's name.
