STATE BUILDING AFRICA


By 1000 most of the sub-Saharan Africans had adopted , but they did not form
governments like a lot of other civilizations did. Rather, they organized themselves into
networks.

Sometime before 1000 the ethnic group formed seven states which were connected by kinship ties.

The Hausa kingdom benefited tremendously from the trade system, and as you know,
those trade routes brought Muslims into West Africa and by the 1300s the Hausa kingdom had largely become

In general, wherever governments existed in sub-Saharan Africa, they were not governments
ruling over large empires. Rather, they almost always small communities organized by ties.

Literature existed in African societies, but it was largely in nature.
