Axomiya Bhasa Unnati Sadhini Sabha


- In the year 1888, this organization was formed.
- It discussed topics to enhance the states literary field along with acceleration of its
culture and language.
- The Jonaki Magazine is the mouthpiece of this organization.
- The three most important personalities of this period are Hemchandra Goswami,
Lakshminath Bezbaruah and Chandrakumar Agarwala.
Jorhat Sarbajanik Sabha
- Jorhat Sarbajanik Sabha was founded in the year 1884 by Jagannath Baruah at
Jorhat.
Assam Association
- the first political organization in Assam.
- The Assam Association was formed in 1903 by Manik Chandra Baruah.
- The first session of the Association was held in the year 1905 in Dibrugarh.
Assam Provincial Congress Committee
- The nationalistic movement of Assam soon merged with the national stream with
the formation of the Assam Provincial Congress Committee in June, 1921.
- The first President of the session was Kuladhar Chaliha. The first secretary of the
session was Nabin Chandra Bordoloi.

Important Events of Modern Assam

1901 - Asia's first Oil Refinery was established in Digboi. The first Government College
in Assam, the Cotton College, was established on 27 May.
1905 - The Swadeshi movement in Assam was led by Ambikagiri Raychoudhury.
1906 - Muslim League was formed in Assam by Abdul Matin Choudhury.
1909 - The Assamese magazine Bahi was published (Editor was Lakshmi Nath Bezbaruah).
1910 - Assamese magazine Assam Bandhu was published from Dibrugarh.
1911 - Tea Research Centre was established at Tocklai in Jorhat.\
1916 - Assam Chatra Sanmilan Formed
1917 - First Asom Sahitya Sabha was held at Sivasagar.
1918 - First Assamese Sonet book Malach was published by Hiteshwar Borborah.
(Priyotomar Sithi by Hemchandra Goswami was the first Assamese Sonnet poem.)
1921 - Mahatma Gandhi visited Assam for the first time.
1925 - First match box factory of Assam established at Dhubri.
1926 - 41st Indian National Congress Session was held at Pandu, Guwahati.
1935 - The first Assamese movie Jyotimati was released.
- Self Governance in Assam was introduced.

1937 - Congress secured maximum number of seats but no majority
- Leader of Muslim League Sir Sayed Muhammad Saadulla formed the first council
of minister.
1939 - 2nd Assamese movie Indramalati was released.
1941 - Third Assamese film Monumoti was released (directed by Rohini Kumar Baruah).
1942 - Kanaklata and Mukunda Kakoti were gunned down by the British Police, Gahpur
Police Station.
1947 - Gopinath Bordoloi became the first C.M. and Sir Akbar Hydari became the governor
of Independent Assam . First Medical College is established in Dibrugarh.
