Chapter 1

Introduction

This chapter includes the background of the study; the statement of the

problem; the significance of the study; the scope and delimitation; and the definition of

terms. It discusses the problem that the researchers sought an answer to.

Background of the Study

According to Iwamoto and Chun (2020), the use of social media is

incomparably on the rise among students influenced by the globalized forms of

communication and the post-pandemic rush, to use multiple social media platforms for

education in different fields of study. Though social media has created tremendous

chances for sharing ideas and emotions, the kind of social support it provides might fail

to meet students’ emotional needs, or the alleged positive impact might be short-

lasting. In recent years, several studies have been conducted to explore the potential

effects of social media on students’ affective traits, such as stress, anxiety, depression,

and so on. The problem can be insightful for teachers who tend to take the potential

behavior impact of social media for granted. Social media is a form of effort for people,

especially students, to get close to each other on the internet or social contacts by

making connections through individuals. Social media is the social interaction among

people who create, share, and exchange information and ideas in environments,

schools, workplaces, homes, communities, etc. Social media. This study pointed out the

impact of social media on students in Mabayuan Senior High School. The topic will

reveal social media platforms and their positive and negative impact on Grade 12

students. The researchers arrive at the problem of how social media might impact the

lives and the students' behavior. The purpose of this study is to know the impact of social

media impact to student’s behavior by conducting research and help students be aware of

this impact, it will allow them to have an idea of what over usage of technology can cause

them and how to avoid getting to this point of feeling any symptoms of mental health

issues and behavioral changes.

Statement of the Problem

Generally, the study will determine the positive and negative impact of social

media on students' behavior under the Humanities and Social Sciences strand of

Mabayuan Senior High School. Specifically, it will seek answers to the following

questions;

1. How may the respondents’ profile be described in terms of:

1.1. Age;

1.2. Sex;

1.3. Section;

1.4. How many hours do they spend using social media; and

1.5. What is the social media platform they use?

2. How does social media affect the behavior of students?

3. Is there a significant difference in the behavior of students when grouped

according to profile?

Grade 12-HUMSS students of Mabayuan Senior High School enrolled during the 1st

Semester of S.Y 2023-2024.

The study will be limited by the difficulty in obtaining information since some

respondents will think of it as an invasion of privacy when asked about their daily

behavior in terms of social media good and bad benefits'. Furthermore, since some

respondents do not practice proper using of social media, it might affect the results of the

study.

Review of Related Literature

This chapter reviews the related literature, which supports and gives credit to the

details of this research. The researcher anchored this comprehensive study to different

viewpoints and perspectives to present a thorough treatment of the problem. Concepts,

findings, theories, and notions from scholarly research and articles related to the impact

of social media on the behavior of students are presented to provide an extensive

background of the study and to justify the researchers’ objective in undertaking it.

Theoretical Framework

Social Media forms have evolved over a period of time to now include the

Internet and social media, which has greatly changed not only the many forms of media,

but also the way students and other learners choose to learn. Digitalization has led to

innovations in new media forms and a proliferation of content across the various media

forms. Today, the Internet plays a major role in the use of new media by users. The

advent of social media has substantially changed the manner in which many people,

MABAYUAN SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL

communities, and/or organizations, communicate and interact. Kaplan and Haenlein

(2010, p. 61) defined social media as “a group of Internet-based applications that build on

the ideological and technological foundations of Web 2.0 and allow the creation and

exchange of user generated content". Using these applications, people can create, share,

and exchange information in a virtual community. The dramatic development of social

media has helped shape people’s connections with others via different social media

platforms (Colliander & Dahlén, 2011). Today, the benefits of participating in social

media not only involve simple social communication, but also building reputations and

bringing in career opportunities, and/or generating direct monetary. Define media effects

as the deliberate and nondeliberate short- and long-term within-person changes in

cognitions, emotions, attitudes, and behavior that result from media use (Valkenburg et

al., Reference Valkenburg, Peter and Walther2016). And I define a (social) media effects

theory as a theory that attempts to explain the uses and effects of (social) media use on

individuals, groups, or societies as a whole (Valkenburg & Oliver, Reference Valkenburg

and Oliver2019). To be labeled a (social) media effects theory, a theory at least needs to

conceptualize media use, and the potential changes that this use can bring about within

individuals, groups, or societies (i.e., the media effect).

Behavior

It is defined as the way one acts or conducts oneself, especially towards others. It is often

a response to a particular situation or stimulus. Behavior cannot be managed separately

from learning and well-being. The use of social media is incomparably on the rise among

students, influenced by the globalized forms of communication and the post-pandemic

rush to use multiple social media platforms for education in different fields of study.

Age

Social media is a big part of many teens' lives. A 2018 Pew Research Center survey of

nearly 750 13- to 17-year-olds found that 45% are online almost constantly and 97% use

a social media platform, such as YouTube, Facebook, Instagram or Snapchat.

Section

The effect of the section on students behavior in using social media is a topic of debate

among researchers. Some studies suggest that social media usage has a negative

influence on student's social behavior, Social media improves student's social

engagement and interaction with others, as it may provide them with connectivity,

information, support, and entertainment.

Duration of time spend using social media

The amount of students time spend on social media varies. According to a survey,About

37% of students spend between 1 and 2 hours per day on social media, however, some

students claim they spent more than four hours a day on social media

Social Media

Social media can have both positive and negative effects on students Excessive use of

social media can lead to distraction and disrupted sleep. Students who spend more time

on social media than on their studies may experience a decline grades

Social media platform

Platforms are part of the impact on students behavior and students primarily use these

social media platforms: Messenger (for communicating), Wikipedia (for reference),

Facebook for Updates, Instagram for Photo Sharing, Youtube for Video Tutorials, and

Positive Impact of Social Media

Social media have both positive and negative impacts on student's behavior, and

some positive really motives a lot of students, With the use of social media platforms in

school, the students get motivated and fostered to learn. Educational videos on YouTube,

easy access to e-books, online notes, and learning via video calls are major aspects that

contribute to educational development. Distance learning is one of the best ways to learn

from reputed organizations by being at any location that social media has made possible.

Negative Impact of Social Media

Social Media platforms are a significant factor that is commencing to distress and

obstacles of mind. These days students tend to lose their concentration from studying and

instead enjoy browsing on social media. All of this conveys to waste of time without

getting anything from it. Students are often incapable of submitting their work in the

specified time frame because they are more concentrated on applying social media

platforms. Reduces Learning And Research Capability With the extensive use of social

media, students these days are varying more on such platforms to gain information and

knowledge instead of looking out for the same in books, journals, or notes. Because it is

straightforward to obtain data online, students’ reading habits and their learning and

research skills are diminishing.

Methodology

This chapter looks at the strategy used for collecting and analyzing data which

form the basis of the study. This includes research design, respondents, and location,

instruments, data collection, and data analysis.

Research Design

This Study Is Correlational Quantitative Research. It is a non-experimental type

of research that involves numerical measurement of Variables and investigation of

whether the variables correlate identified and finally the strength of correlation. In other

words, quantity correlation research is a design of research that entails observing the

statistical relationship between two variables in their natural phenomenon

Respondents of the Study

Locale of the Study

The researchers will conduct the research in Mabayuan Senior High School where

the needs of the study are satisfied since the respondents of the research are addressed in

the said locale. Mabayuan Senior High School is a public Senior High School located at

Otero Avenue, Mabayuan. It is one of the most densely populated schools in Olongapo

City, Zambales in terms of SHS student enrollees. Olongapo was a small fishing village

of Subic. Records show that the Aeta's were its first settlers. In 1884, Olongapo was

occupied by the Spaniards who made it a settlement of the Spanish navy. Recognizing at

once the advantages of Subic Bay’s “uniform depth, wide waters, and the protection from

strong winds provided by the mountains on three sides,” King Alfonso II, proclaimed

Subic Bay as Spain’s stronghold in the Far East. Lured by the deep-water harbor which is

regarded as “having no equal in the Philippine Island.” Admiral George Dewey took

Olongapo and Subic Bay during the Spanish – American war.

Sampling Technique

The researchers will use a random sampling technique. According to Byju (2024),

random sampling, also known as probability sampling, is a method used to make

assumptions about a population by selecting a sample of observations. Additionally, it

randomly selects a subset of the population, where each member has an equal chance of

being selected (Thomas, 2020). Therefore, the researchers will use a random sampling

technique where the selection of respondents will be completely random.

Data Gathering Instrument

The researchers will use a survey questionnaire to collect data from the

respondents. It is a technique for gathering data about the attitudes, behavior, or actions

of the respondents by a structured set of questions. It aims to obtain information for data

analysis and interpretation; hence attention is paid to how the respondents are selected

(Preston, 2009). Using a survey questionnaire is more cost-effective, efficient, and

flexible, and allows the collection of data from a very large sample size or a population.

Data Gathering Procedure

The researchers undertook the following steps in collecting data:

1. The researchers sent a request letter addressed to the principal of Mabayuan Senior

High School, Mrs. Mercedita S. Fernandez for her approval to administer the survey

questionnaire to the respondents.

2. After getting the approval, an endorsement letter was provided to the class adviser of

the students and respondents. The researchers explained the purpose of the study and

gave an assurance of confidentiality, privacy, and anonymity before floating the survey

questionnaire.

3. The researchers personally collected the completed survey questionnaire to make sure

that all questions had been answered by the respondents. The gathered responses were

organized and analyzed using appropriate statistical tools.

Statistical Treatment

To analyze and interpret data efficiently, the researchers will employ the
following statistical tools.

1. Frequency and Percentage

The researchers will use this to calculate the percentage of male and female respondents.
It will also be used to help determine how many of the participants gave a particular
answer. This statistical treatment will be used in analyzing the data collected on how
social media affects the behavior of students.

2. 4-point Likert Scale

It is an ordered scale from which respondents choose the option that best aligns with their
view. It will be used to measure how often students use social media, as stated in the
survey questionnaire.

3. T-Test

It will be used to compare the means of two groups and determine its statistical
significance. The researchers will use this test to derive the difference between the
mean values from each data set, the standard deviation of each group, and the
number of data values. It will be used to compare the data between two groups,
the male and female groups in HUMSS-A.

4. Analysis of Variance

ANOVA- is a statistical test used to analyze the difference between the means of
more than two groups. The researchers will use this test to derive the difference between
the mean values from each data set, the standard deviation of each group, and the number
of data values. It will be used to know whether the usage of social media has a significant
relationship according to the profile of the students.
