Hello MTDA!

Happy December! I hope each and every one of you is having a wonderful winter season so far
and that you’ve been able to spend time with your families and loved ones. I also hope that
those of you in academia have had a successful semester and that you are approaching the
end without too much trouble. As we head into the final few weeks of the Fall 2023 term, I’ve
been reflecting on many things, including the progress we’ve made as an organization.

This is an exciting time for MTDA. As you may have noticed, some changes are happening as
we shift into our new organization and name. You’ve probably seen the new logo appear on
social media and our website. You’ve received the call for our first big event as a new
organization, the Winter Symposium. I hope to see many of you submit ideas and look forward
to the fine work that I know will come from that event. I know that it may seem like these things
are happening really fast, but this has been in the works for many years as the organization has
grown and shifted away from just being a focus group at ATHE. However, just because we are
now our own independent entity, that doesn’t mean that there is any less support for ATHE and
for those of you would plan to continue to participate in ATHE. In fact, the MTDA leadership has

been busy preparing for ATHE to release instructions for the 2024 conference. As Barrie
mentioned in her note last week, as soon as we have more information you will have more
information.

On the note of the Winter Symposium, the MTDA leadership is planning to host a membership
meeting at that event which will both provide information and be an opportunity for you all to
provide feedback and ideas about the future of the organization. You will also notice that the
CFP for ATHE this year includes an invitation for members to join us in the process of
programming this year’s conference. ATHE has decided to place that responsibility on the
shoulders of the focus groups, so we saw that as an opportunity to invite more voices into our
decision-making process.

As we chart our new course as MTDA, it is important to me and to the entire leadership team
that we continue the work of making the organization and the field more inclusive, more open,
and more responsive to the current moment. I am grateful to the leadership team and to each of
you who has volunteered your precious time this past year to make this organization what it is. I
am excited about what is ahead and honored to help steer the organization through its next
chapter.

Hello, MTDA community.

I hope your semester is wrapping up and you are making it through the onslaught of work. We
have been announcing new events and opportunities almost every week lately. Below, I have
rounded up all of the MTDA events of the past, present, and future.

MTDA Book Launch - Fall 2023


We had two wonderful Book Launches this fall (you can read about them at this link). In the
Spring we will host more and we will send out a call for folks to let us know about their books
and articles for inclusion in the events. There is no application process - if you want to share
your Music/Theatre/Dance work and you are available on the proposed dates, you will be invited
to do so!

Scholars Roundtable - January 9, 2024
We are proud to be partnering with The American Theatre and Drama Society (ATDS) for a
Scholars’ Roundtable. The event will celebrate recent scholarly work on race within the
American musical theater and explore how the art form (and the scholarly conversation
surrounding the art form) has traditionally been dominated by hegemonic whiteness. It will be
organized under the auspices of ATDS’s Antiracism Initiatives and MTDA’s Book Launch series,
featuring three books that are recent publications in Bloomsbury’s Topics in Musical Theater
series.

MTDA Winter Symposium - February 16th and 17th, 2024


Music Theatre Dance Association is proud to be planning our second annual winter event filled
with panels, roundtables, workshops, and more. The Symposium will be held online and will be
free to anyone who wants to attend - there is no membership requirement. This event is part of
MTDA’s commitment to providing free and accessible events to our community. The due date to
submit to the Winter Symposium is January 8, 2024.

ATHE 2024 Conference


We do not yet know when the due date for ATHE conference submissions will be but the MTDA
team has decided to send out the MTDA CFP now so you can start thinking about your
proposals. That way, when ATHE does announce the due date and the logistics of how to
submit a proposal, you won't feel rushed. We have created our CFP as a google doc so that we
can simply update the information as we get it. Rest assured, we will also be emailing you with
the new information as we receive it from ATHE.

I would like to introduce two sections for our ongoing newsletter.

1. I have added a “job openings” section. Feel free to email me any jobs that you would like
circulated and I will add the links to the newsletters.
2. I would also like to open up a MEMBERSHIP NEWS section. Please email me with any
workshops, books, or other news youʼd like me to share with our membership, so we can
celebrate you all year round!

We are in the process of revamping our mission statement throughout the year. Stay tuned.

Please consider getting involved even by simply voicing your opinions so that MTDA continues to serve
the needs of this growing community. To keep open communication as we grow our organization,

● Drew University seeks applications for a tenure-track Assistant Professor of Theatre:


Directing and Musical Theatre, beginning August 2024. The successful candidate will
join our nationally ranked Department of Theatre and Dance to teach core courses, such
as Introduction to Directing, Intermediate Directing, and Advanced Directing. They might
also teach classes in acting, playscript analysis, musical theatre, dramatic literature, and
applied performance depending on their area of expertise. Review of applications will
begin on Oct. 16, 2023. The applications close on December 20, 2023. Position subject
to ongoing budgetary approval.
