WELDERPERFORMANCEQUALIFICATION
1.0 PURPOSE
The purpose of this procedure is to ensure that the only qualified and certified welders
are employed for the project and their qualification shall be maintained to satisfy the
scope of a contract and the appropriate SAUDI ARAMCO Engineering Standards.
2.0 SCOPE
This procedure shall be used for qualifying welders, welding operator, maintain welder's
continuity qualification and to determine the welder or welding operator can perform
satisfactory work in accordance with the requirements of ASME Section IX, SAUDI
ARAMCO standards

5.0 Responsibilities / Requirements
5.1 Welding Supervisor
Shall ensure that the welder receives adequate training and asses the welder’s
ability to satisfactory carry-out the approval advising on retraining where
applicable. Shall maintain the WTS data base ensuring the computer information
is up to date by in putting performance Qualifications, re-certification test and
determine revoked welders qualifications.
5.2 Welding Engineer
Shall advice on welding technology and provide any special requirements
information. Arrange for computer data base update of qualifications. Ensure

that new welders receive adequate training in order to perform the required
works. Shall ensure that required authorities training in order to perform the
required works. Shall ensure that required authorities are available to witness
and approve test results.
5.3 QA/QC Manager
Ensure that requirements of the scope of work has been identified and adhered
to. Review all WPS. And WPQR witness qualifications tests. Maintain qualification
records and provides Saudi Aramco with the necessary information required for
the project.
5.4 QC Inspector
Monitor welder's performance and reports to the QA/QC Manager on a regular
basis repair rates and retraining requirements.
Shall be close monitor the new welder’s initial work. Ensure that each welders
work is subjected to non destructive examination at the earliest possible time.
Arrange monitoring and advice on qualification updates.
6.0 PROCEDURE
Performance Monitoring
All Welders proposed for the Project shall be tested and certified in accordance
with either ASME SEC IX, AWS D1.1, or API STD 1104 and SAEP-324 as required, for
all types of welding (includes tack, repair and temporary).
Certifications of welders shall be reviewed by the QA/QC Manager prior to
submission to Saudi Aramco and approval shall be obtained through
appropriate Job Clearance Card (JCC).
All properly certified welders shall bear a Job Clearance Card (JCC) prior to the
start of work.
6.1 Welders that have not been properly certified shall not be permitted to weld.
The initial production work of welders shall be monitored by the QA/QC
department to determine the ability of welder to make sound welds. For new
welders first 3 joints shall be radio graphed and accepted prior to the
production welding.
6.2 The QC inspector shall monitor that whether the welder certifications are being
maintained in accordance with the governing Codes and standards of the

project. Welders who do not maintain valid certification or not producing work of
acceptable quality shall not be permitted to weld and have their JCC
withdrawn. Once withdrawn, JCC's shall only be reinstated on proof of training,
and successful completion of a recertification test.
6.3 The QA/QC Manager shall submit to Saudi Aramco on a weekly basis a report of
Welders Performance Record detailing production repair rate of each welder
and detailed breakdown
Welder’s Continuity Monitoring
6.4 On a weekly basis the project QC Supervisor shall obtain from the Welding
Supervisor (4 week look-ahead) listing of welders whose qualification are due to
expire . This shall be attached to the weekly QC report.
6.5 Where the welder has been employed during the preceding 6 months on work
(subject to NDE) for which the qualification was issued, update of qualification
shall be upon objective evidence of continued use.
6.6 Where the welder has not been employed on work relevant to his qualification in
the preceding 6 months. The Welding Supervisor shall (where possible) assign the
welder to work that maintains the welder's qualification.
6.7 The Project QC Supervisor shall complete the "Record of Welder Qualification"
and obtain client or third party endorsement. The Project QC Supervisor shall
send the Record of Welder Qualification with supporting verified copies of NDE
reports (Radiograph/Ultrasonic) to the Welding Engineer.
6.8 Welding Department shall update the Welder & Welding Operator Qualification
Test Record and file all reports and records.
6.9 The Welding Engineer with the Welding Supervisor shall update the welder
qualification database identifying the new expiry date of the qualification.
If no update justification is received the database shall be updated entering
"EXP" in the Expiry Date Column, to this that the particular qualification is no
longer valid.
6.10 Where a Welder's qualification has expired due to unavailability of process
capability on a particular site the welder may (at the company's discretion) be
re-qualified in accordance with applicable Codes and Specifications.
6.11 Where it is required to extend the qualification range of an existing welder the
procedure as detailed above shall be followed. All qualification tests to be

witnessed by a customer approved third party authority. Original certificates
approved third party authority. Original certificates of satisfactory tests shall be
forwarded to the Welding Engineer.
6.12 Job Clearance Cards shall be returned to Saudi Aramco when the welder goes
on home leave or is terminated form the project.
6.13 Welders that return to work within three months from home leave (to the same
project) may be reinstated without retesting.
6.14 The test records of all welders and welding operators shall be available at all
times at the work location for review by Saudi Aramco Inspection.
