Course Title : Electric Circuits

This Question Paper Consists of 5 (Five) Printed Pages (Including Cover Page) with 4 (Four)
Questions.

INSTRUCTION(S) TO CANDIDATES

• The total mark of this Question paper is 80.


• The overall final assessment is worth 60% of the total course assessment.
• Answer ALL QUESTIONS.
• Only approved calculator with ‘KoE approved’ sticker is allowed (non-programmable and
non-graphical).
• Marks assigned to each question are listed in the margin.
• Note that one of the conditions to pass the course is to obtain at least 50% of this
examination.

Any form of cheating or attempt to cheat is a serious offence which may


lead to dismissal

QUESTION 1 (20 marks)


(a) Find V1 and V2 using nodal analysis for the circuit in Fig. 1(a) below. (10)

(b) Determine the value of RL that enables the circuit shown to deliver maximum power (10)
to the terminals a – b given in Fig. 1(b). Find the maximum power delivered to RL.

QUESTION 2 (20 marks)


(a) Determine the equivalent capacitance with respect to the terminals a – b for the circuit (4)
shown below in Fig. 2(a):

(b) Under dc conditions, determine vC, iL and the energy stored in the capacitor and (6)
inductor in the circuit of Fig. 2(b)

(c) Apply phasor approach to find v(t) and i(t) in the following integrodifferential
equations. (4)
i. 𝑖(𝑡) = 6 sin (5𝑡 + 20°) + 7 cos(5𝑡 + 40°) (4)

ii. 20 ∫ 𝑣 𝑑𝑡 + 5 𝑑𝑡 + 10𝑣(𝑡) = −20 sin 5𝑡 (2)
iii. Determine whether the i(t) signal in Q2c(i) leads or lags the v(t) signal in
Q2c(ii), and by how many degrees?

QUESTION 4 (20 marks)


(a) Given 𝑣(𝑡) = 4 cos (4𝑡 + 30°) and 𝑖(𝑡) = 5 cos (2𝑡 + 20°). Analyse the circuit in
Fig. 4(a) and use a suitable method to find steady state voltage vo(t) across the (11)
inductor 2H in the circuit below.

(b) Determine the complex power, the reactive power and the average power absorbed
by the load in the circuit below if ig(t) = 10 cos 25000t mA
