3D Shapes

3D shapes have three dimensions - width, height, and depth. They are solids that can be physically held. The most common 3D shapes are cubes, cuboids, cylinders, and spheres. 3D shapes have faces, edges, and corners to describe them. Cubes have 6 square faces, 12 edges, and 8 corners. Cuboids have 6 rectangular faces, 12 edges, and 8 corners. Cylinders have 1 curved face, 2 edges, and no corners. Spheres have 1 curved surface and no edges or corners.

Properties of 3D Shapes

3D shapes are shapes with three dimensions – width

(breadth), height (length) and depth. 3D shapes are solids
and can be physically held.

width

The most common 3D shapes are cuboids, cubes, cylinders

and spheres.

We use the terms faces, edges and corners to describe and

identify 3D shapes.

Faces

The faces are the flat surfaces in 3D shapes.

Edges

The edges are where two surfaces meet.

Corners

Corners are where two or more edges (lines) meet at a

point.

face

A cuboid has 6 faces that are all rectangles. It has 12 edges

and 8 corners. All the angles at the corners are right angles.

Cube

A cube has 6 faces that are all the same size. All the faces
are squares. It has 12 edges and 8 corners. All the angles at
the corners are right angles.
Cylinder

A cylinder has 3 faces (1 curved side), 2 edges and no

corners. The flat sides (bases) of a cylinder are circles.
Sphere

curved surface

A sphere has 1 curved surface, no edges and no corners.
