Manual Start Procedure for Air Starting System on GE Marine and Stationary Diesel Engines

1. GENERAL INFORMATION
1.1. INTRODUCTION

This manual provides instructions for using the manual start provision on air start combination valves. These
valves are compatible with the V228, V250 and L250 families of GE diesel engines and are primarily used in the
marine and stationary power markets.

1.2. SAFETY INFORMATION

Safety precautions, which must be observed when manually operating air start combination valves, may appear
throughout this publication. WARNINGS indicate the potential for personal injury, and CAUTIONS indicate the
potential for equipment damage.

3. FUNCTIONAL DESCRIPTION

#3 l Inf
The air start combination valve normally starts the air start process by actuation of a 24V DC solenoid valve.
However, as per class requirements, the engine must be capable of being started even if the solenoid valve fails.

ne ia
For this reason, there is a manual start override button, located on the bottom of the air start combination valve
gi nt
which is attached to the air starter assembly. Refer to Figure 1 .

WARNING: Exercise care and use proper judgement when manually activating the solenoid. Use all appropriate
PPE (Personal Protective Equipment) such as safety glasses, gloves and hard hats while performing this task.
ia ta

Failure to do so may cause personal injury.

5.1. MANUAL AIR START

NOTE: A 24V DC power supply is required in order to power the engine controller and for Electronic Fuel In-
GE

jection (EFI) operation.

Whenever the engine fails to start due to “non-activation” of the solenoid valve, the manual start override button
ar

(as shown in Figure 1 and Figure 2 ) is used to manually actuate the solenoid valve as follows:
M

1. The manual start override button and the engine start button (on the engine controller inside the control
room) must be pressed simultaneously.

2. Press and hold these buttons until the engine starts (normally for a period of 5–6 seconds).

3. Release the manual start override button and the engine start button once engine speed reaches 80-90
rpm.

CAUTION: Be sure to release the manual start override button when the engine speed reaches 80–90 rpm. Keep-
ing the button pressed in for longer periods of time may cause starter motor failure due to prolonged engage-
ment of the starter motor pinion with the flywheel ring gear.

NOTE: In normal starting operations, once the engine begins to run on its own power and reaches an engine
speed of approximately 100–150 rpm, deactivation of the solenoid is controlled by the PowerStar engine con-
trol system and the starter is disengaged.
