Name of the Course : CBCS B.Sc. (Mathematical Sciences) / B.Sc.

(Physical Sciences)/
B.Sc. (Life Sciences)/Applied Sciences
Unique Paper Code : 42357501
Name of the Paper : DSC-Differential Equations
Semester :V
Duration : 3 Hours
Maximum Marks : 75

Attempt any four questions. All questions carry equal marks.

1. Determine the most general function 𝑁(𝑥, 𝑦) such that the equation is exact, and solve the
resulting exact equation:

(𝑥 −2 𝑦 −2 + 𝑥𝑦 −3 )𝑑𝑥 + 𝑁(𝑥, 𝑦)𝑑𝑦 = 0

Solve the differential equation
𝑑𝑦 𝑥
+ 𝑦 = 3𝑥 𝑦1/2
𝑑𝑥 1 − 𝑥 2
Also, solve the differential equation
(3𝑥 2 𝑦 4 + 2𝑥𝑦)𝑑𝑥 + (2𝑥 3 𝑦 2 − 𝑥 2 )𝑑𝑦 = 0

2. Solve the differential equation

𝑑2 𝑦
− 𝑦 = 𝑥 2 cos 𝑥
𝑑𝑥 2
Also solve the following initial value problem

𝑑2 𝑦 𝑑𝑦
𝑥2 2
− 4𝑥 + 4𝑦 = 4 𝑥 2 − 6𝑥 3 , 𝑦(2) = 4, 𝑦 ′ (2) = −1
𝑑𝑥 𝑑𝑥

3. Given that 𝑦 = 𝑥 + 1 is a solution of

𝑑2 𝑦
2
𝑑𝑦
(𝑥 + 1) − 3(𝑥 + 1) + 3𝑦 = 0,
𝑑𝑥 2 𝑑𝑥
Find the linearly independent solution by reducing the order and also write the general
solution.
Use the method of variation of parameters to solve the equation

𝑑2 𝑦 𝑑𝑦
2
+4 + 5𝑦 = 𝑒 −2𝑥 sec 𝑥
𝑑𝑥 𝑑𝑥
4. Show that the family of parabolas 𝑦 2 = 2𝑐𝑥 + 𝑐 2 is self- orthogonal.
Also, solve the system of linear differential equations
𝑑𝑥 𝑑𝑦
2 + − 𝑥 − 𝑦 = 𝑒 −𝑡
𝑑𝑡 𝑑𝑡
𝑑𝑥 𝑑𝑦
+ + 2𝑥 + 𝑦 = 𝑒 𝑡
𝑑𝑡 𝑑𝑡

5. Find the general solution of the equation

𝜕𝑢 𝜕𝑢
𝑦2 − 𝑥𝑦 = 𝑥(𝑢 − 2𝑦)
𝜕𝑥 𝜕𝑦
Apply the method of separation of variables to solve the equation:
𝜕𝑢 𝜕𝑢
+2 = 0, 𝑤𝑖𝑡ℎ 𝑢(0, 𝑦) = 3𝑒 −2𝑦
𝜕𝑥 𝜕𝑦

6. Find the partial differential equation arising from the surfaces

𝑧 = 𝑥 + 𝑦 + 𝑓(𝑥𝑦)
Determine the region in which the given equation

𝜕2𝑢 𝜕2𝑢
𝑦2 + =1
𝜕𝑥 2 𝜕𝑦 2
is hyperbolic, parabolic or elliptic, and transform the equation in the respective region to
canonical form.
